2 brand new Emaxx builds

I figure I would show everyone what I'm doing this weekend. I'm going to be building/upgrading two new trucks for a friend to give to his two sons for Christmas. I'm just taking 2 new emaxx's and upgrading the drive train to make it hold up a little better to the brushless power. They kids will start off with NiMH, but lipos will be on order once they get used to the speed and want to go faster. I'm also going to go ahead and do the rpm upgrades while I have the suspension apart to do the hybrid diffs and all the CVD's. These 2 boys have a BMX track in there backyard so these trucks will see plenty of air time. I'm sure I will spend lots of time repairing and upgrading the trucks as they break stuff. This is only the second time I have gotten to unbox a rc vehicle, just like that new car smell :applause:

I see vented Nimh's in the near future:yes:

brainanator 12.15.2012 12:59 AM

dang, quite the investment there! Hope them kiddos like the awesome presents! (of course they will!!)

Blazerss 12.15.2012 02:04 AM

Yea I was trying to get the father to let me build 2 trucks just like my runner, but the price tag shocked him a little. I told him eventually he will spend that much once these 2 are upgraded enough to hold up to the BMX track. :) I'm sure these 2 trucks will make their Christmas morning awesome.

Ok, some of you know I haven't been exactly thrilled with the FLM bulkless stuff. But with the available options for bulletproofing for the best price and availability of parts, it was the best option in this case. Now comes the diffs that come with these. They didn't come with any oil, and the only shims included are already in the diffs. Can anyone tell me what diff fluid combo has worked well for them with this setup? Also, the diffs felt a little too tight to me, but of course there was no fluid in them. Will the fluid make them feel better or have yall had to shim these before installation?

Thanks for any help guys.

_paralyzed_ 12.15.2012 04:59 AM

10k front, 7k rear.

Never go off whether someone else has shimmed "X" product or not, every diff/gear mesh should be checked individually and dealt with accordingly.

Don't forget to change out the pinion to compensate for the lower diff ratio. I would shoot for a 35-40mph top speed using those Nimh's.

It's an awesome thing you are doing for the boys, hopefully they let you on the bmx track!

Arct1k 12.15.2012 09:30 AM

Ok if the diffs are a little tight. They will wear in

Blazerss 12.15.2012 01:32 PM

Thanks guys. I had someone feel the diffs that is more familiar with the way the should feel and he said they felt perfect. The only thing I have ever run in a maxx is the UE 6 spyder diffs and I got them used and haven't had a single issue with them. So I haven't actually had to deal with diffs and the assembly of them when they were actually going to be run and not just sitting in a shelf queen. I did forget about compensating for the diffs though, thanks Paralyzed. I have a big collection of pinions, so It shouldn't be an issue. Just got back from the LHS with fluids, so hopefully I won't have to make another trip. Time to start getting the trucks back together with the new parts.

WheelMan 12.15.2012 02:01 PM

A couple of very lucky boys.

Not only are they getting brand new Maxx trucks, they are getting modifications right out of the gate! And some good ones at that!

RCShocker 12.15.2012 02:30 PM

How old are the boys that you are building these for?

Who's gonna get the 2nd truck you build? Lol......

Or are you upgrading both at the same time?

I'm sure they will be very excited. And having the upgrades from the very beginning will be awesome. It just wouldnt be the same if you beat on these trucks for 6 months and then did all the up's.

Like 80% of us generally do, building as we break or upgrading as we go.

Blazerss 12.15.2012 02:49 PM

Ok, making some progress now. Nothing like taking apart brand new trucks. Just for giggles I had to see how these would look in my collection, and I must say I think they would fit in well once I get the new parts installed.

The kids are 12 and 10
I'm doing the same thing to both trucks, so when I'm done the only difference will be the bodies.

Paralyzed; I might have to take back what I said about not liking the FLM hybrids in my past post. These are going together great and once together are feeling very good. Maybe my first experience with these was just a fluke.

You need to pick up a set of Hudy tools for all the work you do.
If I had your wife's # I'd tell her to buy you this for Christmas:

http://www.hudy.net/xhudy/products/p...47022ac3f441a8

That's the set I have, love it. I've tried every tool manufacturer out there, Hudy is the best.
And I bought a 2.5mm Hudy ball end driver to get those pesky bottom screws out of EMaxx bulkheads, so much easier now.

+1

I love my Hudy tool's

Blazerss 12.16.2012 12:26 PM

Wow Justin, I just looked at the price of those and was a little shocked. If they don't say Starrett or Snap-on on them I would have a hard time spending that kind of money on them. My Dynamite tools have worked fine for me so far, plus they were all free with a truck I bought (sold the truck, kept the tools ). I actually do have a few Hudy tools but I never seem to grab them to use, I guess the pink handles on the Dynamites just draw me in. But since you (Justin) still need to get me a Christmas present this year, those would be great.:wink:

Jeez I wish my parents would buy me a brand new E-maxx for Christmas  Cool builds though!

Yea, me too. :mdr:

Ok guys, need some help now. Found out the hard way you have to install the included stub shafts in the diffs in order to use the Traxxas CVD's. The cups/stubs that came installed in the diffs are too short. So after assembling and disassembling the first one I was putting the second one together right the first time and have run into a problem. On one of these stub shafts that is included with the kit the holes were not drilled in the center of the shaft. This means I can't insert the pin through it and then get the gear that goes on the end of the shaft to seat down on the pin. Also, I can't get a drive cup on the other end of the shaft and get the pin screw to go through it to secure the cup to the shaft. Does anyone know what stub shafts these are? I believe the diffs are Hot Bodies and I have found the shaft with the cup made into it on the bay for sale, but I can't find just the stub shaft. Any help is much appreciated guys. Thanks

WEB 12.16.2012 06:34 PM

Thay are Carster Racing diff and the stub shaft you can get at Mike"s shop under RCM parts hope this helps you???

I have LST diffs in my Revo and used Traxxas Stub Axles with the threads cut off.

http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXHFY7&P=7

I think you can take the stub axle out of the driveshafts that you remove from the truck. Test fit that to make sure it fits, then cut the threads off with a dremel (I had to cut just a bit more than the threads so the end of the shaft would sit flush with the spider gear).

This picture should help:

Blazerss 12.17.2012 08:01 PM

Thanks for the help and PM's guys. I contacted FLM and they said they will have 2 new ones in the mail tomorrow. I'm still going to make one at work tomorrow in stainless or just steel and harden it. These have to be done and RTR Christmas morning and I don't really have faith that the USPS will have it here by then, so better to be safe than sorry.

The second issue I had was with the alignment pin hole in front bulks of the second truck. It was .003 too small and the alignment pin wouldn't slide in. So I took them to work today and put them on the mill and reamed them to the correct size and the pins fit perfect now.

WheelMan 12.17.2012 08:19 PM

WOW FLM has some quality issues going on apparently.

Good thing you have a machine shop to make the parts.

-Travis

Blazerss 12.17.2012 11:11 PM

Well I don't want to say anything bad about FLM as these Bulks are the only thing that I have ever had an issue with out off the products I have bought from them. Plus they have been very helpful in getting the issue resolved that I told them about. Everyone makes mistakes, it's what you do after the mistake that defines you, not the fact that you made a mistake.

Thats well said.

oh I completely agree. As I told you the other day, I had a very good experience with them as well. They took care of the same issue for me, plus they replaced a part that I broke. They didn't have to do that, but they did, so kudos to them for being so understanding. That is how you keep customers, and gain more business in the future.

Hopefully I will get the replacement from FLM by Christmas and can just install it, but either way these will be RTR Christmas morning.

WheelMan 12.20.2012 09:37 AM

Nice work man :great:

Blazerss 12.24.2012 12:24 AM

Thanks Wheelman,

Got both trucks finished up Friday night and delivered on Saturday. I ended up using the output shaft I made because the replacement from FLM still hasn't arrived. In the future I will keep using my proven parts with the GA bulks and UE diffs, they have never given me any troubles and don't require any mill or lathe time. Im sure it won't be long and both trucks will be on lipos as soon as the kids get used to the NiMH speed.

Looks Good man! Im a Machinist too, but i never really get to make anything for myself :(

nastety92 01.14.2013 04:38 PM

How are these trucks holding up? The kids must be loving them. Have they switched over to lipo's yet?

Nice job,
Nick

I was wondering this as well. They must be having a blast!

So how many shock caps have blown off!?

-Travis

Blazerss 01.14.2013 06:28 PM

Thanks guys, the trucks have been holding up well so far on NiMH. Only issue has been drive cup set screws coming loose. A generous amount of loctite has fixed the issue on both trucks so far. Lipos haven't been ordered yet, but better chargers that will also do lipos have been ordered. I'm sure lipos aren't too far of. So far no shock cap issues yet, very surprising.
