My first ever UE build
Figured it was time for me to post a build thread, as I've been working on a few Maxx trucks over the last several months, and haven't shared any of them yet, so here's one at least. This one has taken a good amount of patience, searching, and luck!...as I'm sure most of you know, since some of these parts only come around every so often. Some of them I snatched off the bay (), but most of them have come from members on the UE forum and here on RCM.
It's just a pile of parts right now, but soon it'll be coming to life :mdr: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...f71d1285-1.jpg I've spent the last two days cleaning and polishing all the parts, to get them to look like what you see in the picture. Been a lot of work, but they sure do look pretty now. :D What I have so far: -Dace Predator Chassis -UE Monoblock -UE VBS Pro F&R w/Ti Skids, Jounces, Bumpers -UE GenIV Servo Saver -Ofna Spider 8 Diffs -UE Racer X Suspension w/Setbacks -UE Ti CVDs -DD Wing Mount -Onclebens 14-17mm Adapters -UE Supershocks -HCR Titanium Center Skid -Titanium Front Tie Rods What I still need: -RCM Center Diff Mount -Ofna Spider Center Diff -Motor & ESC -Titanium VBS Hinge Pins -Titanium Pillow Balls -Ofna MP Rear Arm Links -Center Dogbones -Travis |
Just got this in the mail too :mdr: A very nicely done piece Gregers!
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps1d0f3529.jpg Think I will use it on this truck instead of the HCR skid I cut down. Its much more stout than the skid is, and it lines up to the holes on the Predator braces perfectly. -Travis |
Hate to ask the tab for all the parts...going to be a sweet build for sure
|
Yeah don't ask that. lol
Its only money though, right? -Travis |
Got a little assembly done tonight.
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps4c28ba97.jpg Drilled out and re-tapped every hole that had a fine thread metric screw, to replace it with a stainless 6-32. Much stronger than the junk black screws IMO (which rust anyways :oh:), and I have more stainless hardware than I know what to do with...so why buy an aftermarket metric screw kit, just because its made for the truck, when I already have something that's better anyways. Just had to take my time and not rush it. But I live for customization, and a good challenge. Dare to be different, I say :mdr: http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psefa626bc.jpg - Titanium pillow balls = on their way - Titanium Hinge pins = cutting some to fit - MBX5 wing stay = on its way -Travis |
That is going to be one sweet truck Travis. Good job on hunting all those parts down, quite a lot of those, don't come around that often.
|
I did the same thing with 6/32 screws on the last Maxx build I did. I too had a source of (free) stainless hardware and it definitely was an improvement in strength and looks. Titanium skids have a habit of shearing 3mm screws for me, not so with the 6/32 stainless.
I've built too many Maxx trucks and really don't want to build anymore. But I've never had one with RacerX or setbacks and everytime I see one I want it soo bad. The price tag is a reality check for me though. |

To your comment about the Racer X and setbacks...I would have to agree, it seems crazy to pay what we do for these parts, but I try not to think about that...as its only money right? Anyways, here's a couple better pics of what I've got put together so far. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps7fdd12d0.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps910bd220.jpg Currently working on hinge pins and cleaning up the diffs. Still need some random parts here and there, but I'm working on it. Got the Ti pillow balls and MBX5 wing mount last night :mdr: -Travis |
Yeah I've heard the 12.9 better than stainless thing too. I've never had hardware I could say was 12.9 but the 6/32 stainless I used was way stronger than the black stuff or even whatever grade shiny stuff came with HCR bulks. It is a pretty easy upgrade to do that adds a nice custom touch that not everyone will notice right away.
It is a great build and I'm always sorry I didn't spend the dough on the RacerX. They're pretty, but pretty is not my style. I just really want to drive the ultimate evolution of the Maxx and beat the snot out of it, that's only reason the price tag held me back. |

Got my wing mount
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps6bb6d140.jpg Cut some hinge pins down http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps284c2407.jpg Mounted the front suspension http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psa1fdf83a.jpg And the rear suspension http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps4b40ef35.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psae576c46.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psbd523448.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps8db333b4.jpg I like the ProLine wing a lot. A nice change from the standard straight style wing that so many use. -Travis |
Made some progress tonight :mdr:
Got the powerstroke spacers from Kris. TOP notch quality man! I just gave them a quick polishing http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps4294afa0.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps05fc74c7.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps089226f9.jpg Got a pair of the ofna links for my Racer X, from Kris as well. Tapped them out to M6 x 1mm LH threads so I could use the original links http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psb718f51b.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps11119478.jpg Then of course I stripped the anodizing http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps5571b359.jpg And polished them up too http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps48fd59eb.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps40b609de.jpg -Travis |

That's a beautiful build you have there... can't wait to see it in action...
Alien |
I didn't realize I hadn't updated this thread with any pics of what I had completed so far, so here you guys go!
http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...fc8a336-1.jpeg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...9eca6d3-1.jpeg ^These are from before I did the ofna links though. Did a little polishing on the diff mount, just to follow the overall trend of the build. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psd5e97ee1.jpg Just messing around with the DSLR and my scale garage project. http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...psff1e6ecd.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps7ad88594.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps0a610d26.jpg http://i33.photobucket.com/albums/d7...ps61239829.jpg -Travis |
That's pure sex right there. Beautiful build. It deserves a neu motor. (deanoed and polished of course!)
And a Mamba Monster in one of these- http://www.ebay.com/itm/Castle-Creat...item460d317f06 |
Those Powerstrokes looks sweet. Perfect fit in with the rest of this awesome build.
|
Thanks guys! I just can't help but stare at this build every time I go out to the garage. The parts are just awesome together.
Quote:
And I had never seen the billet Mamba casing, until now :gasp: I can't possibly see how this truck can be complete withou one...so I must make this happen! The listing is not super clear though, and I'm still learning...this is for the previous Mamba Monster esc right?...not the current Mamba 2? -Travis |

Sure looks good. Nice build, great job on the polishing.
That's a really cool speed control case. Any links to the RX8 one? I might just have to go for that. |
Here is a page to his active ebay listings (hope it works for other people)
http://www.ebay.com/sch/rcboss/m.htm...&_trksid=p3686 I don't think he can sell on RCTech anymore since they started enforcing the rule where you can't sell stuff you have produced solely to sell. |

Looks interesting, but why not just buy a new waterproof factory MMM. I can see the reasoning for wanting it with this build but in general it doesn't make sence. Nick |
Yeah it doesn't seem to bring anything to the table that the MM2 can't, other than the major bling factor!...which is what this build is all about, of course!
I am very excited that he has an RX8 version as well though, because running a Tekin system in this truck has been my other choice vs the Nue setup. I wonder what kind of quantity he has these things in? Just wondering if I need to jump on this now, or if there will be availability of it later on. hmm maybe have to shoot him a message. -Travis |
Hold on to your socks!
I got my RCM center diff/motor mount over the weekend, so naturally I just had to mount the 1520 on it so I could see what it would look like!...even though that motor isn't going on this truck, it looks pretty BA  http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_126546.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_323866.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e5_121497.jpeg -Travis |
ooooo purdy.
Do yourself a big favor, don't run it in the sand. It'll ruin that nice finish. Not to mention what the sand does to bearings and whatnot. |
oh yeah I don't plan to do that to this truck! I don't want all that polishing sandblasted away! lol
Those tires are for running on my other trucks (which are NOT all polished up and pretty), I just threw them on this truck for pictures because I thought they looked sweet. -Travis |
ok so here's some details on what I did to get to what you see in the previous pictures, above.
RCM Center Diff/Motor Mount and an Ofna Spider 8 diff with 46T spur http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_428108.jpeg And a Gregers mounting plate (the 7.5 outdrive cups made this assembly very tricky) http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e2_184219.jpeg 8x15x5mm Boca Bearings for the 8mm axles and 15mm knuckles :mdr: http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e9_798375.jpeg And some 17mm hexes for the 8mm axles :mdr: http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e8_831309.jpeg They're smaller than the 8x16x5mm bearings, but I didn't want to know what someone would charge me to open the knuckles up to 16mm, and I really wanted to run 8mm axles. So the 8x15x5mm bearings are a perfect fix, even though they are sort of hard to find, and very costly (ABEC#1, Rubber seal, 440C Stainless Steel Race, with Ceramic SI3N4 Balls) http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e15_48810.jpeg -Travis |
Mounted the CD unit up to the braces
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_540330.jpeg And finally bit the bullet and cut out the center of the Predator so the center diff would fit http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_421916.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e5_759838.jpeg Turned out quite nice I think http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e7_477235.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e6_815580.jpeg -Travis |
I've read a lot of good things about these, and some even seem to swear by them, so I finally got me some.
Ejector Pins (for making hinge pins) http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_436689.jpeg Man these make NICE hinge pins!! After making a few, I realized just how BEAUTIFULLY they fit compared to the Titanium pins I modified...they made the Ti ones seem like pure junk! The Ti pins pushed through really hard, seemed to catch and grab, and a few even seemed stuck (and the truck has never even been run). But the Ejector Pins just glide right through like glass, and are a very precise fit...even at 14" long they do not flex very much at all (once cut to length for a hinge pin though, absolutely zero flex!). http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e2_533293.jpeg With VBS & RacerX it took most of a 14" pin to make all the uppers, and about 2/3 of a 14" pin to make all the lowers. I was guessing two 14" pins would complete 1 whole truck, assuming no mistakes. Turns out there is room for error. Nothing wrong with a little extra. I will be using these on all of my trucks, for sure! Got all 8 of them made for the VBS/RacerX setup on the Predator last night. EXT Suspension truck is next. And I got enough for my next build too :mdr: -Travis |
Put a custom steering link together for this truck, similar to the one I made for the FLM truck.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_621637.jpeg On this truck however, the placement of the servo is much better, and I didn't need to cross under the center bone to the servo saver. http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_166132.jpeg -Travis |
Man, this build is so beautifull. I am trying to get myself a good paying job so that I can afford art like this. Great effort dude!
|
Thank you for the complements sir!
A lot of time & patience has gone into finding all the parts for this build. But its been worth it, as it truly is a work of art! I love the idea of how much engineering and machine time has gone into all these parts. And the quality is next to none...purely awesome stuff! I'm very fortunate to have had the opportunity to build this truck. All I'm waiting on are some center dogbones, and electronics. Then this beast will be ready to run! -Travis |
|
Gosh! it's so shiny! :surprised:... nice work man...
Alien |
haha yeah that's what happens when you have too much time on your hands and no electronics to run it with yet
-Travis |
Grabbed some 5/16" aluminum round stock and made some body posts for the predator. Mcmaster Carr supplied me with the 5/16" bore aluminum set screw collars.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_836055.jpeg The round bar fit a bit snug at first, but after some sanding and polishing they fit quite nicely http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e2_332143.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_306144.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_859734.jpeg Forgot to drill holes for body clips :sarcastic: so still need to do that. http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e5_606239.jpeg -Travis |
Holy toledos batman, this is awesome!
|
Thank you Sam!
Got my custom length center bones! Nothing but the best quality, as always, thanks to onclebens http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ge_704961.jpeg http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_341847.jpeg -Travis |
Looks really nice.
I want to see some video of you driving one of these beasts. |
That will happen, don't worry! As soon as I get a charging setup and some Lipo's, it will be game on for my FLM truck.
I keep getting distracted with buying parts I find for sale that I seem to think I need   haha -Travis |
