Wheelman's UE/FLM Maxx build

I've been working on this build for a while now, and its not done yet, but I figured I would share what I have so far.
I'm building it to be a basher, to take the abuse, and to look cool of course :intello:

I guess a list of parts is in order, so here we go:

- FLM Center Chassis & Braces (to be replaced with UE's new HV Lightning :mdr: ... when available of course)
- Complete UE EXT Suspension
- Titanium Tierods
- FLM Hybrid Bulkhead Gearboxes
- Ofna Hyper 7 Spider Diffs
- UE Steel 6mm CVDs & Drive Cups all around
- UE Monoblock Chassis Extension
- Stamped 120gm Titanium beadlock wheels w/custom hex adapters
- IMEX J-Hawg Tires
- UE Supershocks (freshly rebuilt)
- HCR Titanium Front, Center & Rear skids
- RD Logics Trans Case
- FLM Low CG Motor Mount Plate
- Steel trans idler gear
- onclebens custom 145mm rear center stainless steel dogbone
- Gregers custom knucklhead wing mount
- MBX6 Wing stay & Wing

Still to come:

- Plastix ejector pins to replace the Titanium hinge pins
- UE Gen IV Servo Saver to replace the craptastic look-alike I had just laying around
- UE Hardened Steel Pillow Balls
- Brushless Motor & ESC
- Spur & Pinion

Anyways, on to the pictures

Truck looks great Travis. Thats a lot of BLING right there.

Are the wheels 3.2 size? I'd like a set of those Imex Maxx Dawg for my truggy.

Nick

WheelMan 02.13.2013 09:40 AM

Thank you Nick

Yes the wheels are stock Maxx size, 3.2 wheels. They're a 5 piece bolt together beadlock....2 SUPER light weight stamped Titanium wheel halves, 2 plastic inner bead locking rings, and an adapter that bolts on the back and holds it all together.

The IMEX J-Hawg tires are pretty cool looking, but in my opinion, they are probably not necessarily a great choice for actual bashing...especially brushless. My reason being is that I'm not very impressed with the construction of the tires. While the tread area of the tire is almost excessively rigid and heavy duty, the sidewalls are exactly the opposite...the sidewalls are VERY thin, and seem like they would tear pretty darn easily. Not to mention the foams that came with the tires are EXTRA FIRM, making the tires hard as a rock. So my guess is they will most likely be quite out of balance, and with the extra RPM of a brushless system, things might get a little crazy. haha

I plan to run completely different tires when bashing this monster.

Just my 0.02 though

-Travis

nastety92 02.13.2013 10:02 AM

The tires look the part on that truck though and the wheels are great looking.

I've been looking for another basher tire for my truggies other than the Badlands.

Are you going to use this one or will it be a shelf queen?

Nick

WheelMan 02.13.2013 10:19 AM

Thanks, I agree, they fit the look very well. I'm a big fan of aggressive tread patterns.

I've heard a lot of good things about the badlands tires. I'm going to have me a set of those as well, for actually running on.

This truck is defintely getting run. I'm building it to beat the tar out of, more or less. Its evolving into kind of a heavy beast, but that's ok. Thats why it has 8 supershocks, and 4 of the heavy black springs :oh: :oh:

So yes, to answer your question, this truck will get run a lot, it will not be a shelf queen. My UE Predator build is my shelf queen...although I will be running that truck as well, just not in harsh environments, and not with the drive it like you stole it mentality this build is being done for.

rcs2022 02.13.2013 12:02 PM

Awesome build! Really like all this machined aluminum.
How much does it weigh? If I may ask.

WheelMan 02.13.2013 12:33 PM

I'm not sure of the overall weight so far. But I have wondered the same thing myself. Although I probably do not want to know. haha

The parts I've chosen to use on this truck make for a combination aimed more towards durability, rather than weight savings. And more often than not, strength and durability usually = more weight. All I know so far, is that this beast is a little on the heavy side. But with the brushless power that's in store for it, I don't think the weight is going to be an issue.

If I can find a way to weigh it though, I will definitely share the info here :intello:

-Travis

nastety92 02.13.2013 12:49 PM

Is there anything on this truck from Traxxas other than it's name?

What will it have for a motor/ esc combo?

Nick

WheelMan 02.13.2013 12:54 PM

haha, all I can think of that I actually used from Traxxas, are the trans internals :gasp:

But this has been a ground up build, starting from nothing but random parts gathered from here and there, so there's no stock Maxx just laying in a pile of parts anywhere.

As far as the motor and esc go, I haven't made a final decision. I have it narrowed down to a few different motors. Will most likely go with a Castle ESC...maybe the new Mamba Monster 2 (I like that its waterproof).

I am definitely open to ANY advice anyone might have on what motor they recommend though. I would actually appreciate the input. My decisions have simply been made based on what I've been able to gather by searching around here.

My vote is for MMM 2 and a CC 1520.

Get ER done.

Nick

WheelMan 02.13.2013 01:16 PM

The 1520 is one of the motors I'm looking at, but they don't seem as easy to find? Its a 1600kv motor right?

Yes it is a 1600kv. I see them over on offshore electronics from time to time. I can keep my eyes out if you would like me to.

Nick

rcs2022 02.13.2013 02:56 PM

Wish they would offer the new 1717 as parts for the xo1, to get it with warranty. This would be beautiful for the truck.

Man I must be right on track with my research, haha. The 1717 is a high interest for me simply just to keep temps down. From what I understand, a larger motor such as the 1717 is capable of running considerably cooler while producing the same amount of power as the smaller motors?

My only concern is that its diameter would limit my gearing dramatically? Is this true?

haha it sure is! Thanks again!

And I definitely will do so, with the video. It will be a while though, unfortunately.

Klausen 03.20.2013 02:09 PM

Looking great. Nice score with the 1520. Castle is actually spot on, when calling this motor the bad boy for monstertrucks. Excellent motor, and they should make them again.

WheelMan 03.26.2013 09:04 AM

This is my first big brushless motor, so I'm still just amazed by it. haha Those neodymium magnets are crazy strong...I just can't get over how hard it is to turn the armature by hand :gasp:

Got me a spur finally, and have some RCM Mod 0.8 pinions ordered! :mdr:

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...2/5/image.jpeg

(Onclebens front center dogbone on its way, and another set of 14-17mm hex adapters)

Only parts I need to get this beast running are:

-knuckle bearings (for 8mm axles)
-Mamba Monster 2

-Travis

Emaxx_Quebec 03.26.2013 09:06 AM

Your spur look like mod1

WheelMan 03.26.2013 09:11 AM

Yeah from the picture you're right, it looks like a Mod 1, but I can assure you its a Mod 0.8

-Travis

WheelMan 03.26.2013 09:18 AM

Should I go with the new Mamba Monster 2...or the Mamba XL2? Not because I think I could run 8s on this motor, but just because the XL2 can handle more juice, therefore running it on less than its maximum capability, would maybe make it a more efficient setup?? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here.

-Travis

Klausen 03.26.2013 10:19 AM

Imo the Mamba Monster delivers fine. I assume the second version delivers the same.

This is gonna be one cool build. Well done.

Kcaz25 03.26.2013 10:59 AM

If I could afford to go XL2 I would absolutely! I love the MM2 but the Xl is amazing. Data logging aluminum heat sink case!

WheelMan 03.26.2013 11:05 AM

See since I'm starting with nothing, I want to go in the best direction I can from the start.

Given that it looks like it will cost me about $156 to go MM2, and about $163 to go XL2...I couldn't see a reason not to go for the XL2...which is why I had to ask if I was missing something. But after looking at the prices, what's an extra $7 when you're already spending $150+ anyways (not to mention the capability of an extra 2s power is there if I ever have an application for it)?

Looks like I will be going XL2 :intello:

Well I'm dumb. Not sure what I input wrong when I originally calculated what spur and pinion combo would work with this motor, trans and mounting plate, but I clearly got it wrong :rules: lol

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...purIssue1.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...purIssue2.jpeg

Turns out I needed a 65T spur, not 58T :sarcastic: because the can hits the trans before the gears can properly mesh.

65T Spur on its way! Live and learn, haha

-Travis

WheelMan 04.02.2013 10:33 AM

Final few pieces of this monster are coming together :yipi:

Onclebens custom 70mm stainless steel front center bone, and another set of his 17mm adapters
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/.../5/image0.jpeg

8x15x5mm Boca Bearings for the 8mm axles and 15mm knuckles
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...10_385035.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...11_814126.jpeg

They're smaller than the 8x16x5mm bearings, but I didn't want to know what someone would charge me to open the knuckles up to 16mm, and I really wanted to run 8mm axles. So the 8x15x5mm bearings are a perfect fix, even though they are sort of hard to find, and very costly (ABEC#1, Rubber seal, 440C Stainless Steel Race, with Ceramic SI3N4 Balls)
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...14_272611.jpeg

-Travis

WheelMan 04.02.2013 10:34 AM

Electronics goodies! Castle Mamba XL2, USB Link Programmer, & some bullet connectors (wasn't paying attention that I needed the 8mm bullets, not the 6.5's :sarcastic: so I need to exchange those)
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...5/image19.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...18_577311.jpeg

The XL2 is HUGE :gasp:
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...age16_539.jpeg

Hadn't really thought about it being so big until I opened it up and placed it on the chassis, lol

More parts for this build

SweetStrobe braces & a Gen IV
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_884022.jpeg

The Gen IV all cleaned and polished up with a new, softer spring (finally get to replace the craptastic imitation bellcrank setup I had on the truck)
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_485532.jpeg

Got a 65T spur to replace the too small 58T I had originally (due to my incorrect calculations) so the pinion and spur actually mesh now, and the motor can doesn't hit the trans
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...19_398520.jpeg

Soldered some 8mm bullets on my 1520 so it would connect to the XL2
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...10_981439.jpeg

Due to the 1520's extra length and the lack of material in the FLM motor mount, there is some flex that made me a little uncomfortable, even though I doubt there would be a problem. But I like the belt and suspenders security, so I whipped up a support for the motor.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...18_258527.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...15_105524.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e6_103460.jpeg

And mounted the XL2 to the chassis with a chunk of Lexan
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e5_541549.jpeg

The SweetStrobes were a snug fit, but they mounted right up! Even to the FLM Hybrid bulks they fit up great.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ge_385531.jpeg

The Front brace just looks sorta funny because the FLM Hybrid bulks don't have the 3rd lower mounting hole like the GA's do
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ge1_33987.jpeg

-Travis

WheelMan 04.16.2013 11:16 AM

Got a servo too :mdr:
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...5/Hi-Tech.jpeg

Just need a radio & some batts and this one will be ready to rock!

Think I'm gonna go with an RCM custom battery tray as well.

-Travis

WheelMan 04.18.2013 02:49 PM

Threw a link together with some long rod ends and an all-thread
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...eringLink.jpeg

Looks like it comes really close to the center bone from this angle, but it really doesn't
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...voInstall.jpeg

I should have installed the servo on the other side (and would have), but the angle at which the chassis mounts the servo at, puts the servo horn so close to the servo saver, that the link would be literally about an inch long from hole to hole, and that made creating a link sort of difficult. Plus, I was guessing it would have been rather weak. So I crossed under the center dogbone from the other side, and it seems to work quite nicely.

-Travis

WheelMan 04.26.2013 10:30 AM

Got some Racer's Edge Shock Ends, but I got the 3.0mm versions by accident :grrrrrr:

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e6_857416.jpeg

Just had to retap them to 3.5 and they were good to go though. And they fit the srping retainers very nicely.

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e8_142888.jpeg

They made the shocks a bit longer, but thats ok by me...I like my trucks to have lots of ground clearance :mdr:

-Travis

WheelMan 04.30.2013 11:26 AM

Got the ejector pins cut for this truck now as well (to replace the e-clip style Lunsford Ti versions)
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_569689.jpeg

The FLM Hybrid bulks already had setscrew holes for captive style hinge pins, so that made the upgrade easier
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_212149.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_828876.jpeg

Also, got my RCM Custom Battery Tray :mdr:
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e2_958218.jpeg

Looks huge I know, but its sized to hold 2 x 3S Packs
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_356417.jpeg

WheelMan 05.08.2013 10:28 AM

Got some new cable from McMaster Carr for my Strobe limiters :D

Black Commercial Grade Nylon-coated Wire Rope, Galv, 7x7,3/64"-1/16",270# Break Strg (8923T103)

Red Commercial Grade Nylon-coated Wire Rope, Galv,7x7, 3/64"-1/16",270# Break Strg (8923T601)

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e1_462094.jpeg

Much better looking than the old bare wire that frayed at the ends. Plus its MUCH more flexible, and it still pinches into the top mounts very tightly.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e2_752675.jpeg

I'm curious to see how well the coating on this cable holds up in the top mount...whether or not it wants to pull out on hard crashes or not. Like I said, it fits nice and tight, but we'll see.

I kind of went with the belt and suspenders protection on this truck with the 7075 Racer's Edge Shock Ends AND suspension limiters, but its going to be a basher, and I want it to have every chance of holding up. Not to mention its a little on the heavy side, so crashes are going to be extra rough. haha

-Travis

WheelMan 06.03.2013 09:14 AM

Well, I've been on the hunt for these for a while now, and I finally aquired a few! Piggybacks that fit the UE Supershocks, made by Progressive Suspension.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e9_117481.jpeg

I replaced the o-ring on the little metal plugs with a bigger o-ring for a better seal, as the old ones were letting oil past, and would have made for a messy setup. They're nice and sealed up now though.
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e7_560908.jpeg

The piggybacks were used, and had some nicks and scratches on them, so I stripped the anodizing off of 4 of them to use on this truck (I thought about polishing them, but just thinking about that made me tired, lol so they stayed dull...this is my basher truck though, so they don't need to be super shiny anyways. Maybe they'll get polished someday when I'm feeling more ambitious)
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e6_742190.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e4_138328.jpeg

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e3_894506.jpeg

I'm still looking for a few more of these piggybacks, if anyone has some they're willing to part with :) I would really like to have some black ones that are in good shape, as I would not strip the anodizing from them if they were.
