Labor Day Weekend

Just wondering what everyone had planned for this Labor Day Weekend?

This will be my first time using my RC Truggies this year. I'm excited to get them out and the dust blown off of them.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Nick

I guess I will update my own thread, since no one else seemed very interested in it.

Brought my D8T out for the first run this year. My son and I went to a skate park and it was all going good until I went off the biggest jump there and broke the rear body mount and one of the terminals on the battery that I was using came loose. So that was the end of my day. I'll be finishing the repairs tonight and next weekend I'll go back to that skate park to master that large jump.

This time with video.

Hope you all had a good weekend,
Nick

Glad you had some fun, down in Australia we don't celebrate labour day, wish we did tho, I love long weekends lol... You are brave going to the skate park, very unforgiving when you are a terrible driver like me ;-)

brainanator 09.04.2013 08:49 AM

I went home for my grandfather's 90th birthday. Had a pretty good family reunion. Drove my truggy a bit, crashed my tricopter, drove my car up into the mountains. Had a good time.

WheelMan 09.04.2013 02:08 PM

I spent most of the Labor Day weekend putting a door in wall of my garage that faces towards the yard, and then cleaning up & organizing the entire garage to free up some space (probably just to fill it back up with more crap! lol).

I'm very happy I spent the time to do this though, because the garage is much more usable now, and I have more space to work! :mdr:

Nice looking garage Travis, other than that DOG sign lol.

Nick

Thanks Nick

haha yeah my old man gave me that banner. I like Dodge's pickups a lot, but unless we're talking late 60's Mopars, I'm actually a big Ford fan. I just put that banner up because I thought it was kinda cool...and the wall needed something.

It's all in good fun Travis. I knew you would be able to take a little joke.

I'm a big GM guy myself. I like the BFG poster with the 5.0 on it. That's right from my era.

Nick

WheelMan 09.04.2013 04:21 PM

haha oh yeah its all good man!

That BF Goodrich banner with the yellow notchback on it has gone everywhere with me since I lived at home. Reason being...my first car was a fox body ('90 LX Hatch), which I painted the same color! haha

Shortly after I painted the car, I got that BFG banner from a friend, and its been in every garage I've had since then. Unfortunately though, I don't have my stang anymore. Was my only car for several years, so I had to drive it through the winter...and here in central IA and IL, winter roads are hard on older vehicles. Gobbles them right up, one rusty fender at a time

Just for old times sake, here she is

Looks like a fun car. Was the drivetrain stock or all modded. I like picking on those in my Typhoon.

Nick

WheelMan 09.05.2013 02:48 PM

The drivestrain was stock, but the suspension needed some attention when I got it, so I put some H&R springs and Koni yellow shocks on it. But other than that, and a fresh paint job, it just got driven. Didn't have the car anymore by the time I got a job that gave me money I could've thrown at it.

Typhoon...wasn't that basically GMC's version of the blazer?

-Travis

nastety92 09.05.2013 03:09 PM

The Typhoon is a GMC but it was a limited production AWD V6 single turbo. GMC also made a Syclone, which was a pickup with the same drivetrain. Mine has been 11.6 in the 1/4 so far, hoping for a high 10 sec pass soon.

Wheelman that garage is a wet dream buddy, no wonder you can churn out some beautiful builds!

Ah ok, didn't know all that. Sounds like yours must be pretty healthy to be running 11's. Not bad, not bad at all. Care to share some pictures?

Ouch WheelMan! Telling nastety92 a typhoon is just gmc's version of a blazer is like saying the mustang is just ford's version of the mercury capri, or like a mercury marauder is just mercury's version of a ford crown vic. Hmmmm. Not the best analogies, the point being there is no such thing as just a typhoon.

Ooooh oooh ooh- here's a good analogy- telling nastety92 a typhoon is just gmc's version of a blazer, is like saying a buick grand national is just buick's version of a monte carlo. Yep. That's an apt analogy.

Good job on the door. At first I was like, whoa, that's a big job. But then I saw the window so you already had a header in place. Nice work, it looks clean. And yes, that is a nice man cave. Love the RR!

WheelMan 09.06.2013 08:51 AM

 well no feelings were meant to be hurt, by any means! My knowledge on what a Typhoon is, was very limited, as I've never paid much attention to GMs, so I guess I chose poorly on my wording, haha! Now that I know a little more though, it seems your analogy is spot on!

You are very correct on the window. Before I started, I was expecting that I was gonna have to frame the sides in for a door, but whoever built my garage, definitely did me a favor. The window not only had a header (as expected), but it was also framed in clear down to the floor, perfect for a door! So all I had to do was remove the window, cut the section of wall out from underneath of it, and then pop the door in! Of course it took more work than that, as I had to pull almost all of the siding off on the outside, lol, but you get the point.

Thanks! I love my RR! Currently collecting all the parts I need to swap the front forks out for an 07 inverted setup :mdr:

My feelings weren't hurt, it's all good.

Here is a picture. They made roughly 5000 of these trucks between 1992 and 1993.

Very clean looking, Nick! Nice!

Kind of a sleeper actually. One wouldn't expect that thing to pull an 11 sec 1/4. Would be fun to drive around and surprise people with :mdr:

You got that right Travis. Most people have no idea what it is. Sometimes people look around like, what's making that turbo noise? They can't even tell it coming from my truck.

It's coming. That will be the next motor going in this truck. It's actually not running right now, waiting to be put back together after a cam swap. I've been thinking of getting it running, making a few passes then rip it all apart again and part out the engine, turbo, computer, transmission. Then put a mostly stock 5.3 or 6.0L LS with a single turbo in it. I think I could sell all the V6 stuff and 700R4 parts and put a LS single turbo in it for almost the same money.

We will see how things go, maybe next year. Everyone likes 600-700hp on pump gas right??

It can be done ALL day long with an LS motor.

I keep looking at 98-02 camaros/trans ams. With t-tops or a convertible I think I could get in one using my patient lift.(and help) Then I'd just need hand controls, which is no biggie. I've seen some go for $5k or less.

I feel your love for the LS power plants.

Nice do it up Harold. I'm sure you've seen the many build threads like I have with junk yard motors and single turbos making stupid power. Hot Rod Magazine did one recently with what they thought was a 5.3L and it ended up being a 4.8L it think it made 1200hp.

Here is the link.

DO IT.

_paralyzed_ 09.06.2013 06:27 PM

Thanks for the link, that was a great read. I'm going on craigslist now to look at camaros!

Yes the truck came stock with drum brakes in 1992. When the truck gets back up and running again it will have new disc brakes all around from a C6 Z51 Corvette.

Nick

PBO 09.09.2013 04:44 PM

It would be moderately terrifying trying to pull that thing up with front discs the size of washers & rear drums. Totally understand why you'd want to actually stop using the C6 option

Yes the stock brakes were pretty Terrifying. Trying to stop the truck after a 1/4 mile run at the strip especially with low tire pressure made for an interesting experience. I'm really looking forward to driving the truck with these brakes. We are actually going to be running a dual rear caliper setup. One set of calipers will be used just for racing to lock the rear wheels.

How would that work? sounds interesting but I don't understand

There will be a toggle switch inside the truck and that will get turned on so it will lock the rear caliper, then once I go to launch the truck it will release freeing the rear wheels. It's not setup yet, but hopefully it will be soon and I'll have more info.

How would that be useful? Sounds interesting but I don't understand.

When you first mentioned it I was thinking of a drifter, wanting a rear only brake to initiate slides, adding a second calliper could potentially be easier than converting the existing handbrake/Ebrake to hydraulic on some vehicles. But for the drag strip I'm baffled, is it FWD? It could be for burnouts, but I thought trucks were all 4WD or RWD and I don't see the benefit in just burning out the front tyres on a 4WD.

Unless you have a front only brake too and burn out the fronts and rears separately which would be safer than doing all 4 together.

It's going to work more like a line lock would, line lock would normally keep just the front wheels locked but this would keep the rear wheels locked. On these type of trucks it's hard to us to hold boost at the line when we are getting ready to launch. This would help keep the rear planted. This is an all wheel drive vehicle. From what I'm told this is something that the Buick Grand Nationals use on some of there vehicles.

Nick

_paralyzed_ 09.12.2013 02:13 AM

Get a trans brake. Will be much more effective, and probably less complicated.
