E-Maxx 3905 rebuild
Hello Guys,
I want so show you my rebuild of my E-Maxx. But first a little bit about me: My Name is Lars and i am 18 years old. I'm from Germany so my English isn't the best but i'm still learning. But know back to topic.... I got my Maxx in June 2008. It was my second Car after a Stampede 2wd with mechanic speed control. I was very happy about it. With the first crash I need new parts so I tuned it up. I didn't know how much you can mod at this truck and after some yeas and a lot of money almost every stock part is changed. So here a little part list: FLM Chassis FLM Motormount FLM Bulkhead Braces RD Gearbox silver HotRacing Slipper New Era Models Bulkheads RPM REVO Axel Carriers Traxxas CVDs Traxxas center CVD for 3906 (I killed FLM dogbone in the front) UE Widetrack Gen2 UE UltraLite 7.5 6 Spyder Savöx SA-1283 SG Mamba Monster 2200kv V1.3 Proline Masher40 on Axial 8spoke Proline GMC Toptruck Body Traxxas BigBore Shocks with MTA Springs. This is the up-to-date version of this truck. Many parts that don't fit are sold. One of the biggest Problems of this truck is the Driveshaft’s in combination with the UE Diffs and Suspension arms. I destroyed over 6 Sets of Driveshaft’s like MIPs or TRX Steel because they are all a little bit to short. Why I chose this title? The Truck is complete disassembled, because I change broken or missing parts like screws or bearings. I used this truck for many years every weekend so all parts are used and so they looked. Now I polished every part and this is a lot of work but it is worth doing. Now it must be enough text. Here are some pictures of the Truck. http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxxrebuild004mvfnl.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxxrebuild003q1eaz.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxxrebuild0024ad9y.jpg I hope you can understand what I wrote. I did my best. Next time I will show you more pictures of the rebuild process. Lars |
Thanks for posting, Lars - and your English seems quite good, actually(for sure better than my German). I would like to see some body-off pictures of the truck, as it sounds nicely built.
Regarding the drive shaft issue you mentioned - turning the pillow balls in as far as possible(without limiting steering or suspension movement of course) may help, but you may also consider finding slightly longer drive cups to make sure the shaft drive pins stay within the cup throughout the full suspension movement(and steering travel up front). |
Hello,
Thanks for you the Tipp. I had the same idea to turning in the pillow in but it wasn't enough. When I used 17mm hex like the stock one I made some 2mm spacers between the Axel and the Carriers. With this Set-Up the Driveshaft was long enough. Are the Hyper7.5 Outdrives longer than the UE? I need only 2mm. With the stock Axel Carriers everything fits, but if I use the RPM I will need 2mm more. I can’t use the stock ones, because I broke them to much and I destroyed the big bearing so often. I hope that I can take a picture tomorrow of a temporary build. |
If you are using the stock diff outdrives(drive cup built into the diff shaft), then they are almost always too short. Using diff shafts and 6mm bore drive cups usually adds the little extra length needed.

Hello Guys,
I'm ready to polish my parts. It was a lot of work. Here is an example: Left side before and right side after polish.... http://abload.de/thumb/p1030857bssxa.jpg When I cleaned the parts I saw that my FLM Motormount is bent. The holes in my Bulkeheads and my CC 2200kv Motor are not available anymore. So before I can build it up I will need some new parts. Are the Traxxas Bulks Ok? What can I do with Motor? I can't put off the Backplate. What Motormount can hold the Motor better at the end? Sometimes I hate this Truck. It etas my money.:whip: So if anybody has some Ideas please help me. |
What do you mean with the holes are not available anymore?
That the treath is stripped? Can't you tap a bigger size screw in it? If not, then I would go for new FLM bulks because the plastic ones arent very good. RPM has bulks now, but I like a drivetrain with very little flex, so aluminum would be my choise there. For a Castle 1515 you can get rebuild kits, they include a new front and rear bell, rotor, and bearings if I am correct. If you want to pull of the endbell, remove all the screws, and push the axle hard to a table or workbench, it should pop off then. I have never seen a motormount that hold the end of the motor to. Just the front should be enough. Doesn't Mike have a motormount? |
Hi,
Yes the treath in the hole is stripped.(sry but I didn't found a better translation:oops:) The RPM Bulks didn't work at my truck. I broke them at the same point like the Stock one after one little jump. I didn't mean the plastic one of Traxxas. I mean the blue alu Bulks. The FLM Bulks are a option too. |
Hey, Finally someone with the same problems ( langauge ) in the same time frame :)
Personally I would go for FLM because of their good name. I don't know what the price difference is between the FLM and the Traxxas ones? I don't have an Traxxas vehicle, so I don't know a lot about them :) Maybe an other option is UE ( don't know their whole name, unlimmited engenering? from the Gorilla maxxes for instance ) they have a good name to. |
The FLM bulks will be stronger than the Traxxas aluminum bulks - FastLane also has an extreme abuse warranty - send the broken bulk back and they will replace it for the cost of shipping in most cases. Same with the motor mount. :-)
|
Mike sells a motor playe adapter that could help you with the stripped hole
|
Hello everybody!
Wow thank you for your tips. So I think I must order some new parts at rc-monster next time. @ruudxd yes it is a problem. But I hope that it helps if I write more in English. It is very hard to find good Maxx parts in Germany. I think I bought the last new UE Parts from a hobbystore here in Germany. So I need shops like rc-monster. @RC-Monster Mike that sounds good. So now my partlist is nearly complete. @Arct1k I never seen this part before. It is a good Idea but I try to get new engine plate. |
Hello everybody,
I want to show you some more Pictures of my Maxx build. I got my new bearings and screws an I like them. The quality is very good! So it makes a lot of fun to work with them. What else is new? I got new Bulks in front. I know you told me that the TRX Bulks are not so tough like the FLM but they are new and I got them were cheap. I Pay only 20€ (23,6$) so I couldn't say no. If they will bend I can change them to FLM. Then I think I found my solution for my outdrive problem. I got the outdrives of an Asso MonsterGT or ThunderTiger MTA4 S28 /S50 and they fit into the Hyper7 perfectly. They are so long that i must cut them about 1.5mm. They are so long that they limited my suspension. I hope my dad can shorten them on lathe. (I hope this is the right word for that machine) Okay but know enough words. Here are some pics.... http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx12hso0.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx2htscz.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx3vls1k.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx4odsdi.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx5dysh3.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx6pys63.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/e-maxx76hs83.jpg Sry for that bad quality but they are snapeshots. Lars |
Hello Guys,
i need you help. I need new steel CVDs for my Maxx. The Traxxas were bend if they was new. What will be better? I found these: MIP, TVR-X-BALL, VantageRC, T-Bonz (TBREVO01X) Any other Tipps? They must fit into the Revo Axel Carrier. I hope you can help me.... Lars |
Hi,
i have some new Parts. So here are some new pictures.... http://abload.de/thumb/2604cab1-563a-4368-bewaugq.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/aac88f78-4b69-4c05-a8atuz9.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/3cc259ca-a505-4fa3-a5ocurh.jpg Hope you like them. |
Nice! those upperarms need to be mounted the other way around.
Love those teamc shocks! where did you get them from? using 2 sets of rear-shocks? like this; https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-H...0/CIMG4668.JPG |
Serum posts!!
for the shafts I use Losi 8ight- t 2.0 shafts and dxr8 stub axles. You have to mill out your outer bearing slot for bigger bearings.8x16. I have an online friend that does it, I can get you in touch with him. That goes for anybody. I have been waiting to post this info up on my thread. I still have a few steps before my maxx is perfect. |
Sounds like a serious tweak Kcaz! Is UE out of business? no more 8mm CVD's from them?
I stranded some time ago on using buggy steering knuckles on RPM arms for my previous max.. It used beefy 14mm balls (combination of a hard coated aluminum ball and a steel threaded screw). Lol, yeh, indeed. I'm getting the cars up and running again, and thought of the warm and gentle atmosphere of this lovely forum. I now have 2 lovely sons, so i've got a hell of an excuse to get them up and running again. The oldest one is totally into trucks, speed and loves to wrench. Youngest one is too young to realize anything.. :) |
welcome back .... :)
|
Heya Tinuss! still around!
|
Hey Guys,
@Serum Yes this Shocks are very nice. I use tow rear (~120mm long) set of them. You can buy them in one bag with everything in it. You must look, that you buy the set's with the TiNi Shockshaft because there are diffrent set on the market. This is the part no.: T08689 I use the Asso Shock Bushing 89083. The hole is a littel bit to small for the UE Shockmount. I file out them a littel bit and now they work perfekt. @Kcaz25 are the Losi 2.0 Driveshafts and Axels still working with the truetrack? Can I see some pictures of your truck? I found my new Brushless System for my truck. I use the Xerun150A ESC and a Tenshock X812L with 2150kv. It was to heavy for my buggy but it must works gerat at the Maxx. I think my Maxx will run again this year but it is still a lot of work. |
Hello!
I have some small new so I want to show you some photos. First I change the UE Upper Arms. (Thx Serum!) http://abload.de/thumb/imagenmkt4.jpg I think I must polish them again, but now I have some good tips. I love this forum! Then I installed the new Slipper. This is the Hot Racing Alu Slipper and I love this Part. It is much better then the stock one. I use it now since 3 years with now issuse. The Spur gear is still my first one and 6 years old. :gasp: http://abload.de/thumb/imagesykln.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/imaged0kut.jpg and build it together http://abload.de/thumb/imageqwj63.jpg I use loctite to hold the Pads on the Slipper. http://abload.de/thumb/image6wkl8.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/imagedjk44.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/imagewqjgn.jpg And here is the new Motor for this Truck. http://abload.de/thumb/imagebqlxg.jpg If klick on the Pictures you can see it in a bigger size. Now I only need a new Motormount, Bumpers, Skidplates, Body, ESC, Turnbuckles and Wheels. |
Looks good, you guys are cost me a lot of money like this ( if I have any ;) )
That spur is in real good shape! Is it metal? |
indeed ...
maxxes are a expensive hobby to have ... :) but fun to build and drive ! |
RC in general is pretty expensive for me :)
But luckily it is my only hobby ( until I have an 1:1 car I am afraid :) ) |
Hey Mr. E-Maxx,
Just caught your thread and read through it. UE (Unlimited Engineering) does have 8mm and 6mm Cvds in stock right now. Unfortunately these newer Cvds from UE were made in China in order to keep the price down. Still the toughest Cvds available. They're a direct fit for your UE diffs drive cups if you use the older 3906 rpm knuckles and not the newer brushless Emaxx RPM knuckles. Some late advice: GA (Great Assembly) bulkheads are the best you can buy. They're $150 for the thick 7075 bulks shipped free in the U.S. You can also get the GA 6061 bulks for $95, both sets come with bulk spacers. FLM sales 6061 bulkheads. I hate to see an EZRun motor or Esc in a cool Maxx truck. Get a tekin set up, that's what I've used in all my Gorillamaxx G4 trucks. Never had a single issue. Runs strong, runs hard. Those shocks look pretty cool, are they 16mm with aluminum bodies and collars? How do they work out for you on big jumps? I have Proline Powerstroke shocks in my 3 Gorillamaxx trucks. Best shocks available for the Maxx trucks especially at the track. I've built some pretty cool Emaxx and if you have any questions you can hit me up. Ps, Gorillamaxx is out of business, been so for more than 6,7 years now. UE is still in business and you can order a full set of 8mm Cvds right now if you like, as long as you live in the US, I've heard that Robyn (owner of UE, doesn't ship outside the U.S.). |
Hey Guys,
@ ruudxd you are rigth. Rc is very expensive. I have 3 car's now. A DEX408V2, D8T Tessmann with Tekno and my E-Maxx. For me 3 car's are to much. I will sold my DEX soon. And the spur is the Stock Plastik one and 7 years old now. @tinuss ture words. I love it to see all this nice parts and ideas in the Maxx world. @ Justinbolin Last Year I want buy some GA Bulks and UE Shafts but they didn't ship to germany so I must buy what I can get here. The Tenshock Motor is very nice in a Monster. It is a 6Pole Motor and has a lot of torque. Obvious more then the Tekin in my D8T. (2000kv) You can't compare this Motor with a Hobbywing. I have tested the Tenshock in the D8T on my local race Track and it was way over powerd on 4s. But I think in a Monster with bigger wheels this motor is the rigth choice. I never run the Truck with Team C Shocks, but they feel very nice and smoth. |
mr emaxx , I am in the Netherlands....
let me know if u need anything ... it is nice to have friends overseas who help out on shipping .. :) |
Hi Guys!
@tinuss thanks for that offer. I will get back to you if I need some help. I got some new Parts for my Maxx today! Here is the new FLM Motormount with a Tenshock X812L 6Pole motor. http://abload.de/thumb/imageu8xme.jpg The new front Bulkheads made by FLM too. http://abload.de/thumb/imageg5sgd.jpg I love these new Bulks. They fit definitely better then the TRX Bulks. And the new Skidplates. http://abload.de/thumb/image1xsy1.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/imageasj84.jpg The V-Maxx Skidplates have very nice detail. For Exsample a little hole for the Diffinputshaft. Or some weight reduction. Here my new Custrom Shocktower for my D8T Tessmann Race Truggy. http://abload.de/thumb/imageugs71.jpg Awesome work Mike. I love it!:yipi: |
Looking good, Lars!
|
Hi Guys!
Thanks Mike! I need some help with my Diffs. I have some UE Ultralite Diffs with 6 Spyder Gears. Now my Outdrives had a lot of play so I need a new bevel-gear and Diff Case. I think Ofna Hyper 7.5 or Hyper SSe must be rigth. Are HB Diffs better then the Hyper Diffs? Does anyone have experience with it? |
The UE diffs are Ofna, but either will work fine(Hyper 7 or HB). The original Hot Bodies Lightning diffs with hardened gears are pretty darn durable.
|
Hi,
Thanks Mike! I got my Sandpapier today and Start to polish some Parts. I got my new Body today too. So you will See some new Pictures in the Future. |
:yes:Uffff. It is a lot of work to polish every Part. :mdr: But it Looks good. I think I need a few more Days.
|
I got my new Combo today. It's a Mamba Monster X with a 1515 Motor. Can wait to test the new ESC. I got this combo for 204€ or 221$. I think it is a very good deal.
|
Great deal!
|
Hello Guys,
in the last few weeks I cleaned and polished my parts. It was a lot of work, because it was my first time. Now I have a huge respect infront of our polish-gurus here. Most of the parts are used, so they have scratches and of course, they look used and it was impossible the get every scratch out. But I like that, because I had a lot of Fun with this Truck and for me every scratch is like a piece of history for me. So this is the Start-Point of the real rebuild, because now I have all Parts together. http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.391px7.jpg Let's build a Maxx!:intello: |
U need a better Servo Saver and maby some knuckles .... :)
I could give u a address if u need / want one |
Looks very nice. But what about the blue? You can remove it pretty easily with drain cleaner (the powder stuff, not the gel).
|
Hi,
@tinuss that sounds expensiv... :) I tested diffrent Servo Savers and come back every time to this one. It had no play in it and move very easy. The knuckles are very helpful if you crash. The will pop out and nothing is broken. I can put them on the ball with one hard hit in 20sek and the Truck is ready to go. @Lizard I like blue and if you see the Body with the Wheels I think the blue is ok. Here are some new pictures: http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.53isqt.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.69msxk.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.10yaura.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.121pu2f.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.13phuk6.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.1427ukh.jpg http://abload.de/thumb/mobile.15hhuuo.jpg Now I must fix my Body. I made a stupid mistake and now there is some glue on it.:diablo::whip: I hope I can fix this. |
Looks good!
What glue did you get on the body? |
