Gorillamaxx G1 with G3 Suspension Build
Hi all,
Have really enjoyed the discussion we have had recently on the Gorillamaxx line of products, so thought I would document a build thread for a truck I am really excited to build. I always like to start with a pic showing a pile of parts, so here goes: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...621_202920.jpg Gorillamaxx G1 Chassis Gorillamaxx G3 Suspension Arms & Towers UE Gen IV Servo Saver UE Superlite Cases UE 6mm CVDs UE Spyder 6 Diffs Front & Rear Centralemaxx 16mm Knuckles Centralemaxx 17mm Hub Adaptors Centralemaxx 17mm Washers Proline Maxx Powerstrokes Kmaxx Kustom Powerstroke Spring Retainers Kmaxx Kustom Powerstroke Spring Seperators SweetStrobe Bulkhead Braces I have a set of GARC 7075 Bulks being drilled & tapped for Ejector Pins at the moment as well. Once they are shipped back to me from the states, this build can really get started. Parts I have planned for this truck that I do not yet have are a FLM Half Case Tranny used with a G1 Single Speed Plate. If anyone has either of these pieces to help me with this build let me know, as I think they would be the icing on the cake so to speak. I am not holding my breath, but you never know unless you ask haha. Feel free to let me know what you guys think, here a few close up of the parts I have for this build. I have also spent some time of my Gorillamaxx Rear Skid this weekend. Is coming along well, still need to wetsand it with 1500 & 20000 sandpaper and the polish. Slowly getting there though which is good.
Here are some comparison shots Before: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...617_190608.jpg After: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...620_202654.jpg |
pretty sad when America has sunk so low that kids would rather discuss global warming over a latte than make us some titanium skids for our GMAXX
|
Agreed haha. I would love some Ti skids lol
|
This thread may just motivate me to freshen up my G1 - just so yours has a sibling!
Mine has a CF lower plate and CF battery straps on it, along with G3 suspension(but I have a purple lower plate somewhere as well) :-) |
Do it! haha, CF lower plate & CF battery straps sounds awesome, dont see many of the CF battery straps anymore
|
Cow burps are causing global warming by the way... Much moreso than their farts.
Gmaxx looks good. I am pretty sure I have some flm maxx trans cases but I am also pretty sure they are the wrong half, so I doubt they will do you any good. I will try to find them and post pics... |
Yeah do it, that would be great if you could lincpimp, cheers.
|
So I am up in the air about this chassis, do I keep it purple, or have it re-anodised blue. The original G1 that got me hooked on tracking one down was this one I found on the UE Forum years ago:
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...%20KMAXX_2.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...cks/G1-9_1.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...ks/G1-11_1.jpg I was never able to track down the current owner, and am not even sure if it is still together anymore. So what do you think guys, don't be shy, let me know your thoughts, purple or blue? I was chatting to one of the past owners of the blue G1 pictured above (who now kicks himself for selling it haha) and he reckons I should keep it purple because that is what makes it so rare. I asked him why is that, how many blue ones have you ever seen, and his answer was one lol, so now he has seen one purple and one blue. Blue can't be any less rare than the purple I say haha |
Strip the anodizing and polish everything to mirror finish :)
|
Purple seems to be pretty rare - not my first choice of colors, but the rarity removes the thought of de-anodizing from my mind(on mine - you can do what you want to yours of course). The silver and blue truck is pretty badass, though!
|
Well maybe your right, I am so not a purple guy, but my wife is, maybe this is a way of getting her not to hate my hobby so much... She often points out the fact I spend more money on my trucks than I do on her, and she is 110% correct haha.
I guess if I kept an eye out for purple axle carriers, purple bumper mounts, and re-anodise the Powerstrokes purple instead of blue. That would look pretty good I reckon. I have a friend who does runs of custom Powerstroke springs that are much much stiffer than stock Proline springs. Plan is to get a set next time he does a run, and spray them white top & bottom. I do not know what it is about white springs, but they look killer in my view, so this truck will be getting white springs at some stage too. |
@Lizard, I like your thinking man, but I already have a mirror truck in the works. I cant upload pics of it at the moment as I am in the office and my company has tight rules on file sharing sites, but once I get home I will post up some pics of my G4 VBS Widetrac build. Pretty proud of it, and has cost me many man hours of polishing and $$$.
|
|
Wow, that thing looks good. OK, then I vote for blue :)
|
Who needs a mirror ? If you have a G-Maxx:lol:
|
I found this pic today, and its gotten me thinking, maybe I ditch the idea of anodising the Powerstrokes purple, and deanodising to a polished look:
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...968cc93435.jpg |
Personally I think that some color contrast makes it pop.
Not sure about purple though. Red or blue anodizing would be nice. |
I wonder where that person got the chrome powerstroke springs?
-Travis |
And this is what 5-6 hours of wetsanding followed by hand polishing ends up as:
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...628_131928.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...628_131941.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...628_132041.jpg A friend in the states messaged me yesterday also, and all of the metric blue 12.9 grade hardware will be on its wasy to me soon. Very excited to get some builds finished, waiting only for the screws to tie it all together: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...75618962_n.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...00790046_n.jpg |
I don't have anywhere near that much patience - but WOW!! Looks great! On the other hand, I can make quite a few skids in 6 hrs - none will shine anything like that, though!
|
Now that is honor for your work as we say in The Netherlands :)
Great work, the only problem I see is that I would not be able to drive it anymore now :) |
Haha, agreed. I'm not happy to admit it, but this truck will never see pavement or dirt. Pure collector's item for me, I have a 3908L emax & a FLM extended LCG Savage for bashing duties. For me personally, I enjoy the build as much as the bash, so while some will hate me for it, there are shelf queens in my house... I have a G4 VBS Widetrac build, a Centralemaxx Ph@ntom Hybrid build, DUH Engineering Dominator Hybrid Electric Conversion with Flextek build, and now this G1 build. Oh, and have I mentioned my clods lol... TTR Tremor, TTR Centurion, & TTR Ripper Pro... Will post up some pics when I get home tonight.
|
looks killer !!!
u need shelf queens ...... but we need bash/race stuff to !! ohhhh clods..... me like :) |
nothing wrong with shelf queens - I have 60 or so RC cars, so no need to beat them all into the ground!
|
Wich I had the money to do that, I love the building to!
Keep up the good work! |
Wish I had the money too haha. If my wife knew half of what I spend on this addiction, she would kill me ;-) Here are some of the other projects either just getting started or bash worthy:
FLM Extended LCG Savage I am preparing to convert with Alza Centre Diff Mount & 1717 powerhouse: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...427_114341.jpg SaBR Extended Ti OFNA Dominator, best truck I have even owned. Best thing about a Ti chassis like this is the sparks when you land your jumps, this truck is as indestructible as it gets in my opinion: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...1_181555_1.jpg Stock 3908L EMAXX with T-Bone front & rear bumpers: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...915_190907.jpg DUH Engineering Hybrid Maxx with Flexteks. This truck will have as much Ti as you can find pretty much, & with my own little flavour of electric conversion using a RCM Centre Mount: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...628_170133.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...703_184640.jpg My Gorillamaxx G4 with Unlimited Engineering VBS & Widetrak: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...%20outside.jpg ThunderTech Racing Centurion LTD Clod with JPS Mod Tri-Star Rims: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...rionLTDjoe.jpg ThunderTech Racing Tremor Clod with JPS Circles Rims: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/.../TremorJoe.jpg |
And a ThunderTech Racing Ripper Pro I am yet to build:
http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...30476705_n.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...27943147_n.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...26456458_n.jpg I think I may have a problem haha... |
now u are just showing off ...... :)
Here is my Ripper pro .... https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...aa&oe=5615C337 I guess u recon the truck in the back .... :) https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...c5&oe=5612CD49 I like my cow Diablo also .. https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...50584346_o.jpg https://scontent.xx.fbcdn.net/hphoto...75099061_o.jpg ahhhh don't we all like showing off hahahaha |
Love the powder-coating Ralf, pure awesome. Might have to look at this as an option before I build my Ripper Pro!
|
Dang, that Gorillamaxx G4 looks awesome to!
That sparking chassis sounds awesome :) |
I have an extended titanium Dominator chassis too(not the same one, though) with Proline bulks and Proline Maxx suspension - it is about as bullet-proof as you can imagine. I raced it quite successfully for 2 seasons and the chassis has minor scratches! Mine is still nitro, though - but with the center diff and rear braking kit(mounted to the rear bulk instead of the center diff like today's trucks).
If I had half the patience of you, Sam, I would have some sweet trucks(not that I don't already have cool trucks, but nothing with a mirror shine)!! |
Mike, my DUH Dominator build has been going literally 10 years or so, now that's patience haha. I got to know Eric, aka DUH Engineering well when he was at his best & creating many Ti parts for the Supermaxx, Titan & Dominator, but then became a Dad, needed to put all hobby projects on hold for a few years...
My DUH parts sat in a box for 5 years or so before I started to get back into things. Unfortunately during this time, entities like Gorillamaxx came & went, and I missed them completely. It is not pictured, but I do have a NIP Rear Brake Kit to go onto my DUH Dominator, so I am hoping that I have thought of everything I need to make this an epic truck... The blue bulks pictured in the DUH parts there are not the bulks I will be using either. I have another set deanodised and polished, they are currently in the states getting drilled & tapped for ejector pics, cannot wait to get them back with my screw order and start building it again... |
Yeah, life happens. To all of us. Glad you got back to it, though - seems like you got caught up pretty well, too. :-)
|
So I taught myself how to polish with a dremel today. I had only ever wet sanded and polished by hand in the past, as that is all I had ever been shown to do. When I was growing up my school never had a woodwork/metalwork class, so I never learnt a lot of things I wish that I could have.
This week's project was to restore & polish a set of front & rear Unlimited Engineering Ultralite Diff Cases. I started trying to wet sand them, and quickly gave up. Far too intricate to sand & polish by hand. This is what I was working with anyway: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...703_221825.jpg http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...703_221927.jpg So I cracked out google, and sure enough youtube was there to save the day lol. Pretty happy with the way they turned out: http://i1186.photobucket.com/albums/...704_180215.jpg |
Looks good indeed!
May I ask where you buy most of the parts? Checking Ebay every day? And may I ask wich grid sandpaper you use to make it shine so much? |
Hey man. I try not to search ebay as much as possible as there is a great deal of fakes going around to be honest. I am a member of a facebook group called Centralemaxx, send me a pm with ur facebook details of you would like me to add you. That is where I get most of my parts. Over the last 3-4 years I have made a lot of friends in the hobby with a similar interest in rare parts as me. I live in Australia, so am very isolated when it comes to this hobby, but through the hobby have made very close friends in the states and all of europe...
Everything I know about polishing I learnt from a friend of mine on the UE forums. Sweetride4Me was one of the 2 guys behind the sweetstrobe braces for the maxx trucks, and is a great guy. He loves to hand polish, and after several of us asked how it is done, he put aside a weekend and documented a how to, as well as post up some youtube videos also. Check it, as it is a good way to get started: http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ghlight=polish Regarding what grit sandpaper to use, it kind of comes down to what you are working with, & how scratched up it is... If you say were working on a new part, without any abuse, then I would start with 1000 grit, then onto 1200, 1500 and finish off with 2000. Once you have gone over the part with 2000, you can then polish using Meguirs Metal Polish to get rid of all the small scratches and bring out that mirror finish. It is very much you get what you put into it. The more you sand, the better the result. If you are working on used parts, then it will save you a lot of heart ache to hit it with 400 grit 1st, then 800, then 1000 & so on... |
