First look at the single speed E-Maxx conversion kit

Here’s a first look at the transmission kit. This is still a prototype. I’m working on some fine tuning for alignment of the gears. Mike should be getting his soon for testing.

The design uses the back half of the stock case and the rear set of gears. The only mod you’ll need to do is cutting the front end off the upper drive shaft (a metal hand saw or dremel takes care of it quite easily). The key to the design is the round coupler piece that sets into the second gear and locks down the drive output shaft. It replaces the inside bearing. All other parts fit from the stock kit. It’s fairly simple and considering all those extra parts you’ll lose off your truck and the rock solid gear meshing this should be a good addition to your race truck.

Let me know what you guys think.

:)

Here's a photo

looks nice! Whats the estimated mrsp? can i see a pic of the gears included/a cutaway view of the internals of the tranny? Nice work! how much does stock weigh and how much does this weigh?

Sylvester 03.19.2005 01:04 AM

cool george! How much will this cost?

MaxxFusion 03.19.2005 02:11 PM

Awesome.

When can I get one?

rc4x4nut 03.19.2005 02:42 PM

 I really want one. Does it lock it in 1st or 2nd gear? I could do a comparison when Mike gets done with the center diff.

Chase023 03.19.2005 03:59 PM

I like this single speed conversion compared to like putting a Differential in the center.

I would rather do this than a differential because there is no point In My Opinion to put diff in the center in a monster truck (kinda defeats the purpose of having a monster Truck IMO). Might as well mod a 1/8 scale buggy if a diff was being use so I think this conversion is great.

george i want one please. i need to talk to you soon anyway. thanx

Serum 03.19.2005 05:49 PM

do you need a GM frame and the GM motorholder to give the heavy BL motor some stability? (because you loose some stability from the gearbox to the frame?)

I dont even consider my truck a truck anymore, its more like a truggy especially after I put the komodo dragon LP tires on. I use it mainly for racing.

More info will be coming soon.

I haven't got the cost from the machine shop yet - it does take a lot of machine time since the cover has so much depth.

I'm sending a kit to Mike for testing (hopefully some brushless abuse). It will fit on both the g-maxx and stock chassis. On the stock chassis you would still need to use the 8 screws for the braces and just have nuts over the open holes where the forward section of the case would be. I'm hoping to get testing done on both the g-maxx motor mount and the stock motor mount configurations.

Superemaxx89 03.20.2005 01:07 AM

what material is it made of?

Is the single speed the second gear? or first?

gorillamaxx 03.20.2005 03:10 AM

The lighting is bad in the photo (late night pic) but it is
6061 T6 aluminum alloy - natural finish (same as our other parts)

It uses the second gear set.

Superemaxx89 03.20.2005 04:09 AM

thanks, any idea on weight?

gorillamaxx 03.20.2005 03:04 PM

The cover and coupler weigh less then 1 oz (0.8 oz)

I haven't compared the before and after weight of the tran yet - its on my to do list :D

was it an alcoholic issue or do you mean the poor light?

gorillamaxx 03.20.2005 03:47 PM

Save those brain cells - they may come in handy some day :C:

Serum 03.20.2005 04:01 PM

i will try to safe them. It was intended as a joke, no sarcasm intended. And i don't drink alcohol.. ;)

gorillamaxx 03.20.2005 04:36 PM

Thats how I read it - I was being facetious too. :D

I still haven't figured out how to photograph aluminum in low light and have it look right.

Serum 03.20.2005 04:43 PM

Zoom in, and take the photo from such a long possible distance. The flash makes it too bright. If your camera supports it, you could also make the flash a bit less bright. But the long distance photographing hint works fine.. Or on a stand, without flash.

Or use a white background. But the pic you made is nice?

supermaxx4190 03.27.2005 12:28 PM

any idea when they will be avalible

RC-Monster Mike 03.27.2005 12:34 PM

I have the proto type now. This would indicate that they will be available soon!

supermaxx4190 03.28.2005 09:52 PM

how soon?

RC-Monster Mike 03.28.2005 10:05 PM

uhm... pretty soon?

supermaxx4190 04.05.2005 08:11 PM

any updates?

RC-Monster Mike 04.05.2005 08:22 PM

Even sooner?!
I certainly don't have a date yet, but I will be sure to post the ETA when I know more.

Rcbros 04.12.2005 11:08 PM

I think I'll want two of these also.

HotnCold 04.16.2005 06:53 AM

Twist my arm ill take one too - oh wait - i think i ordered one already - that would make 2. Or 3. Crap - i forget - when they get in just keep them coming - ill stop when i get enough... LOL

supermaxx 04.21.2005 04:03 PM

does anybody know when it will be out and what the prcie will be of the gorillamaxx tranny?

Rcbros 04.21.2005 11:59 PM

price wont be deteremined till they get finished machining them.

The parts are on machine order but there's a line

T2693 04.25.2005 11:28 PM

Is the conversion kit a total kit or just a mod to the stock setup?

I'm asking because I'm taking all the stock parts I have from my truck and building a stocker setup for my son so if I take parts from the stock I have to replace those parts so I can make another truck.

If it's a mod what would I need from the stock setup so I can prepare for replacement?

RC-Monster Mike 04.25.2005 11:32 PM

It is a mod. I can get the internal parts for the conversion if you want to keep your stock tranny intact.

T2693 04.25.2005 11:35 PM

That would rock for me so I can just slide the stock setup out and drop in the conversion all in one smooth move. Put together all I'll need to make it happen.

I think I may be going BL a little sooner than later, ;)

Thanks again Mike!

ozmatt 04.26.2005 03:42 AM

driveshafts?

Just had a look at the kit, is this kit front rear drive or just rear drive, by the look of the backing plates it seems like there is only one driveshaft coming out, maybe I'm just confused?

matt

RC-Monster Mike 04.26.2005 06:07 AM

the kit is still 4 wheel drive. It simply removes half othe tranny gears from inside the case, but still has both driveshafts exiting the tranny.

makaveli 04.27.2005 06:06 PM

so do you need to do any mods to the gears in the tranny or you just take ou the whole side and put the new one in and its good ?

RC-Monster Mike 04.27.2005 06:17 PM

First of all, welcome to the forums! Now, to your question:

The input shaft (top shaft with the slipper clutch) has to be cut to fit inside the new aluminum case. This is easily done with a dremel. Then, the extra gears are taken out. A pretty simple mod, actually. You are only 30 minutes away, so I could easily help you with this if you needed it. Of course, the tranny is unavailable at the moment, but should be available in a short amount of time.

makaveli 04.27.2005 06:20 PM

cool i will probably purchase one i want to make my revo electric with a e-maxx tranny and dont want to have the shift servo or the 2 speeds so yeah . thanks for the welcoming

RC-Monster Mike 04.27.2005 06:35 PM

I lock out first gear on my trannies anyways, so the single speed conversion is the aobvious choice for me. I have the prototype and I love it!

toby 04.27.2005 06:35 PM

is this aimed more to racers or bashers or just anyone?
