Upper hole in tranny case not centered (motor side)

1 Attachment(s)
I was just taking my aluminum tranny case out to finally install it into my 1/2 case setup, and I noticed the upper hole is not drilled perfectly center. I don't know if it's the hole, or the lip around the hole for the bearing that's not even, but it looks a bit funny. Anyone else get a case with the upper bearing seat off center like this? Will there be any fitment problems with my upper shaft if I stick it in like this? I remember some people complaing their 1/2 case and aluminum case didn't match up smoothly. Is there a newer batch that might not have the defect?:032: Picture is kinda blurry cuz it's still in the packaging -- I might want to send it back...

I see what you mean. If you're lucky, it's the hole and not the counterbore (lip around the hole). If it's just the hole then the bearing will be in the right spot allowing the shaft to be positioned correctly for assembly. That's about all that I have since I'm still running the stock tranny. good luck.

neweuser 07.31.2006 02:43 PM

go4gold is right, it's not the hole that centers your shaft, it's the bearings, so if they are aligned properly still you shouldn't have a problem. But i would still send it back because it should be proper. They can't fix the issue unless they know about it as well. If you still have the stock case, use that until you get your replacement. There is my 2 cents!

I have had a problem with every FLM part i've bought. Not touching them again.

Gustav 08.01.2006 03:25 AM

I'm pretty sure mine's like that aswell, but as has been said it's not a problem, the hole just has to be big enough to allow the top shaft through

.The problem with mine, and others aswell,is that hole on the other side of the case isn't milled deep enough so it compresses the top shaft bearings and causes binding when you tighten the case. The solution is to either grind some off the end of the top gear or if you have access to a mill then run an endmill in there to make it deeper.Hopefully yours will be OK though.Other thing is, it may need some grinding inside the case to clear the idler gears(mine did)

You just have to understand, with such a small company such as FLM, things like this happen.

neweuser 08.01.2006 08:58 AM

FLM has good product. I'm sure if you contact them, or let them know, they willtake care of it. Or, see what Mike can do.

Serum 08.04.2006 10:19 AM

that is a problem with the FLM cases, thought it's not much of a problem, it's just the outer hole isn't centered.

I wonder why on earth they didn't changed it. I had mine when it just came out and i reported it too. it's not that hard to open a drawing and adjust it a bit... :p

giftacrylic 08.13.2006 07:25 AM

I am considering buying the FLM half-case. Has FLM fixed this hole alignment problem?

coolhandcountry 08.13.2006 08:24 AM

I think my hole looked off but when put together it lined up like new.
They could slow the machining process down to be more percise.
We may not get the case for 90 bucks then. They would have
a price like the rest. 150 or more. If ue made a case it would
be more percise but the price would be 300. I don't notice the
hole being off at 60 mph and the body on it.

Serum 08.13.2006 08:57 AM

LOL leroy..

here are a few pics of the tranny.

You can choose between the GPM (CRAPCOUGHCOUGHMOLDEDCOUGH) or the CNC machined FLM.. I would take an FLM over the GPM anyday.

standard_63 08.14.2006 05:13 PM

If it works ok and only looks funny, I don't care much. If were bad enough to not fit though, I asked so that someone could warn me before I took the old one apart that it might not fit. If it fits, no big deal. If it doesn't fit, I'm a comin' after y'all!

I have not noticed that problem but I have not yet assembled mine. I was waiting on a replacement idler gear shaft support. The one that came with my trans was bored incorrectly and the shafts did not fit. Now that the replacement part is here I'll check it out.

I can't say it will fit. I can't say it won't fit.
I can say it will be hard to see. You took the pic from inside the case.
You won't see that on the truck. It is on the bottom as well. The diff cups and chassis will help hide it. As far as looking funny. That would be the least of my worries. Just look at procharger. With all that shine he got you don't notice his. :017:

Procharged5.0 08.15.2006 11:51 AM

Went home to check my trans case. the bearing pockets & hole look good, but when I set it on the chassis I found out that the FLM chassis was mis-drilled! The holes are too far forward! AAAARGH.

I love FLM's Warranty & Customer Servive. Jamie & Gina are great!

However FLM's products will never match the quality and performance of Unlimited Engineering. I thought they just installed upgraded CNC machining centers too!

coolhandcountry 08.15.2006 12:03 PM

So your case is fine but the chassis not working. That is a bummer.
Did you polish the chassis to?

Serum 08.15.2006 12:19 PM

With their equipment it doable to make a perfect product, i don't doubt that.

But their price is unbeatable. Considering the CNC tranny costs less than the molded GPM crap..

Yeah, i allmost forgot Leroy. Procharged.. King of the shiney aluminum..

Procharged.. King of the shiney aluminum..

That's funny Serum! But Yes I am! I've polished nearly every single part. Bulks, dif cases, suspension arms, knuckles, bulk braces, towers, chassis deck (only 1/3 of the way...thankfully), chassis braces, trans case, etc. the Ti skids & supermmaxx shocks are the Titanium color

It will look pretty awesome one it gets assembled!

neweuser 08.15.2006 12:35 PM

I like shiny parts, but IMO, I like them DIRTY TOO! lol, that's the fun part!

Serum 08.15.2006 12:41 PM

Now you are obliged to post a pic Procharged!

coolhandcountry 08.15.2006 01:35 PM

It sure makes me want to see a pic of it.
How long do we have to wait?
It sounds shiny.

Yes, I polish all my own stuff. Right now I don't have time to polish anything, LOL I'm still trying to finish polishing my chassis which is partially done but on hold until I sort out the trans mounting issues. I may have to send in this chassis for a replacement (there goes all the hard work!).

Hopefully I'll be able to help a few of you guys out and polish a limited number of items. Doing the FLM transcase to "mirror" polished finish takes about 6 hours. I'm doing it because I've always wanted a Polished Supermaxx Truck. It may be a bit of a maintenance headache to keep up but I'll give it a go. I also have a special clear coat designed for polished metals. I may or may not use it. With all the flying debris it might chip the clear which would be worse than dulling the metal.

Finally, I'll post some pics, but most of my pics are on my laptop pc. Next time I fire it up I'll post some pics.

neweuser 08.15.2006 03:17 PM

I remember when my truck was all apart like that. i took progression pics. It's fun to see how they develope as you go. Nice job man!

Now that's polishing. I know this takes a lot of time.

Procharged5.0 08.16.2006 12:10 PM

So your saying you like it? :027:

coolhandcountry 08.16.2006 02:18 PM

I can't speak for others.
I can say that is sweet looking.
Can't wait to see it together though.
Have to wear shades to look at it. :017:

Procharged5.0 08.16.2006 03:32 PM

The waiting is driving me crazy as well. I'm waiting to hear back from FLM on the mis-drilled chassis.
