evx and lipo

I have a evx with titans. I was wondering how to hook up a lvc to it for lipo.
I think i know but want to make sure. The wires to the batts on each side of the motor wires. Is this right?

Mike.L 08.14.2006 05:47 PM

and it works???

coolhandcountry 08.14.2006 08:53 PM

I don't know if it works. I haven't got my lipo cells to try it yet. I like to make sure I have it right before hand.

In general I will use one. EVX (HV-MAXX as well) have two sets of power connectors, to connect internally two batteries in series and provide BEC only from one battery pack. Check image for details...

Here is a pic of what I have. You can see the wires going to the lvc. Do I have the right wires hooked up to read the 14.8 volts?

Edit
I missed the lvc in your pic. I have the right wires hooked up. Thanks alot artur. I knew you could help me. :017:

Yes, it is correct.

Artur

P.S. Any time, Leroy!

I just ordered a lipo shield from dimension eng. I want to hook it up as you did. What is the best way to make the actual connection. Your diagram shows where to make, but Im looking for how to make? I cant tell from the other photo. Should I just pull back some of the cover and solder right in?

Thanks.

coolhandcountry 01.06.2007 05:01 PM

As long as it is hooked to the right two wires. It will not matter on how you do it.
As long as it has a good connection. Your perference is up to you.

I will agree with Leroy it is up to you.

- cut heatshrink and unsolder wire from W.S.Deans connector
- put new heatshrink
- resolder wire back to connector with LVC wire
- melt the heatshrink

Repeat the same for other side...

Artur

P.S. It is possible to do that inside EVX, let me know if you want to do that, will look cleaner...

I just got the lvc today in the mail. I'll take a look at it tonight and see what I want to do. Hurry up maxxamps and send those packs!!

Mike.L 01.07.2007 04:18 PM

hopefully it will work:p

Here is what I came up with. I cut off the stock tamiya connectors and used the deans ultra. Kinda tough to solder them on as the wires from the esc are so short. To lazy to take the esc outta the truck.

The big question is do I have it hooked up correct??

(The green part on the wire is some heatshrink as I boogered the case of that thin wire a bit.)

Sylvester 01.07.2007 04:32 PM

Looks good! You've got everything wired correctly.

Mike.L 01.07.2007 04:38 PM

your running two 2s2p 7.4 lipo cell packs? i have a feeling that those titans will burn out.

jhautz 01.07.2007 04:44 PM

Why would 4s be worse than 14 cells? The titans hold up to 14 cells OK.

Why, they even last on 14 cells.

Mike.L 01.07.2007 04:48 PM

jhautz, can't lipo be alot higher in voltage when charged then a nimh battery. i remeber a friend using 14 cell ib 4200's and burnt out 4-5 motors....thats was funny a dom?

If you add spacers in between motors and bracket it will help a lot with cooling problems. Better then extra heatsinks... Will work only with motors with built-in fan, like Titans, but not with like Trinity mild/wild/pro.

Mike.L 01.07.2007 04:51 PM

ya, i made some custom H sinks for mine alswell

Sylvester 01.07.2007 04:52 PM

Even though they are charged at a high voltage, the voltage noticably goes down when accelerating, so does the amperage.

I bet the titans would be able to surpass a test or two with 5s lipo or 16 cells.

Mike.L 01.07.2007 04:54 PM

well i figured that.....sorry im a lipo noob guys

And 20 cells with proper gearing :)
18-cells was my favorite setup, so 5LiPo won't be the limit for Titan's, but would be for EVX. Super Duty XR would be sligtly better in that respect...or modified EVX

And bottom line not more then 180-200W from single 550 can

Serum 01.07.2007 05:13 PM

@ turbo4; do you like your dimensionengineering lipo-shield?

coolhandcountry 01.07.2007 07:26 PM

I found the lipo put more punch out so the motors would get warmer faster. I dropped the gearing a little and it would run cooler. It would also wheelie in second gear almost at well.

turbo4 01.07.2007 09:27 PM

Yes, Im going to run (2) 2s2p 7.4 maxxamps 6000mah's. I have not got the packs yet(should get here this week) I have not even drove the truck yet, had it a week now just looking at it. Usually lipos will run 1.0v to 1.5v over there rating at a full charge. A lot depends on the quality of the charger it seems. Since I have not ran the truck I cant comment on the Lipo shield.

Joel

Where can I get a set of heat sinks for the stock titans?

Sylvester 01.07.2007 09:57 PM

You can check towehobbies, im sure they have got one.

Mike.L 01.07.2007 10:13 PM

or you can make one, what i did was get a 1/4 inch alu pipe and cut it in half and then with a band saw made fins and superglued them to my titan motors...

i couldnt belive it that it worked so well.. and has cheap Money wise:)

revopqrs 01.10.2007 07:43 PM

hmmm interesting... so you can run lipos on the evx? whats the little gadget that was mentioned earlier? does that allow the use of the lipos? anyone got a link?:030:

dont exceed 200watts per 550 can... good advise!:027:

so does 16 cells burn out the exv? i have some extra cells layin here..... running 14 now.

coolhandcountry 01.10.2007 10:21 PM

What do you need a link to?

16 would be really pushing it in my opinion. I wouldn't.

The "thingy" is a LVC or Low Voltage Cut-off which prevents the Li-Po's from over discharging and damaging themselves.

revopqrs 01.11.2007 08:49 AM

ahh thanks pro!! perfect explanation..

Procharged5.0 01.11.2007 10:21 AM

Hey, my pleasure!

Gundam-Guy 01.11.2007 05:56 PM

is it possable to run the evx off one 4s lipo?

coolhandcountry 01.11.2007 06:13 PM

I am not sure if it is or not. You would need to have an extrenal power supply.
I am not sure on the internal power part.

Sylvester 01.12.2007 10:01 AM

Yea you can. Just sauter the two wires which dont use the bec together and you wont have any problems (got it off a crawler site).

coolhandcountry 01.12.2007 02:18 PM

That is for a low cell count though. not 4s. If you did that you will put 4s voltage thru the bec.

Agree 100%!
As Leroy mentioned before, you can run from 4S if you use external power (separate receiver pack or UBEC). Just keep EVX power switch off or get rid of it, keeping wires isolated.

Whats wrong with my advice? With proper cooling and some mods on motor you can squeeze more power from it...

you added bearings?

Yes, and beefed-up brush holders :)
As result extra Amps without fallen brushes, avoiding something like this
