EOS 7i Charger

OK. I received my lipo's today and charger. pretty self explanatory. But what power supply's are you guys using for the charger?
thanks

BrianG 09.01.2006 04:33 PM

I'm using a modded computer power supply. It works well, but I should've gotten one with a higher current 12v rail as it won't let me charge my 14 cell pack at 6A.

squeeforever 09.01.2006 05:28 PM

I use a Novak N-Power.

MetalMan 09.01.2006 06:49 PM

I'm not using that charger, but here's a link to the power supply that I use:
http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bi...A,_5_35A_.html
That's two 12v 30amp power supplies in one unit. They can be detached easily, and they only need 2 pins shorted out to work. For 60amps at $40, it's a STEAL. I already sold the other supply, since 30amps is way more than enough.

squeeforever 09.01.2006 08:02 PM

Yea, the N-Power is way to expensive and I wish I woulda known about stuff like the one Metalman uses...Then again, it was 5 years ago...

neweuser 09.01.2006 10:06 PM

That's nice Metal, but can you find something in a store around the same price? I need to run it so ican charge my lipos, one 2s and one 3s. Thanks guys!]

How do you convert it Metal? Will it do well?

Would this work? http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

BrianG 09.01.2006 11:23 PM

The RadioShack power supply will only work for up to about 40 watts. On the picture, I can see "3/5 Amp". I presume it means it can supply 3A continuous and 5A peaks. You would need a power supply capable of about 150W to be able to fully utilize the 7i charger (it's rated up to 120w).

That PC power supply in MM's link will be about the best thing you'll get for the price. You just have to connect the green wire in the motherboard connector to a ground wire to turn it on.

This is the radio shack power supply i use. http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...entPage=search

neweuser 09.01.2006 11:43 PM

Hey Brian, can you send me pics "of how to" by any chance???? troynelson_672@msn.com

Are there any other mods? Just find the green wire and connect to a black wire or groung it on the side or something?

BrianG 09.01.2006 11:50 PM

Neweuser: I just responded to your PM.

rchippie: Yeah, that is a nice one. A bit pricey, but has plenty of power and should be able to get up to 300w.

neweuser 09.02.2006 12:05 AM

what about this?? http://cgi.ebay.com/Novak-Black-Box-...QQcmdZViewItem

BrianG 09.02.2006 01:33 AM

That one will be right at the edge of the minimum power since it can deliver 108W. The 7i can charge up to 120W. At 108W, the largest Li pack you can charge at ~7A is 4s (actually will be about 6.5A). Or, if you want to charge a 5s pack, you can only charge at about 5A. Charging at a lower current is fine, it will just take longer.

Here, you can see what I did. The green wire is soldered to a black wire. I also cut the connectors off and soldered a Deans on each rail. I only use 12v (yellow), but the 5v (red) or 3.3v (orange) might come in handy someday. I then re-braided the wires so it looks nice. All the other loose wires are individually folded over and heatshrunk. You'll notice that I actually have two sets of 12v outputs. This PS actually has dual 12v supplies, which is what a lot of current units have now.

This is actually a pretty wimpy looking supply. Most decent ones (Antec, Entec, etc) have beefier guts and probably better performance.

neweuser 09.02.2006 01:54 AM

Ok. This is if i want to charge both packs right? Otherwise, what if i want to charger my packs in single? charge my 2s2p, then charge my 3s2p....would that be better? That box you show looks different than the one that MM has?
But i understand most of what you said. But it sounds like that you're trying to explain that i can do both packs at once? That would be cool!!!

BrianG 09.02.2006 01:58 AM

With the properly sized supply, yes. However, even with a billion watt supply, you can only charge a 5s pack at 5.7A because of the 120W limitation of the charger. If you use a 100W supply, the charger will also be limited to 100W and will only be able to charge a 5s pack at 4.7A.

MM's link is for a specialized computer supply, probably for a proprietary server of some kind. The one in my post is a power supply you can get at any computer shop. BTW: mine has a cover - i just removed it to show the internal wiring.

neweuser 09.02.2006 02:26 AM

I see. I guess my problem is this. I only need to charge at 5 to maybe 6 amps. I wouldn't mind doing dual packs, but not necessary. As stated, i have 2s2p and a 3s2p. i need a power supply that i can mod to charge these with my EOS 7i. So, with that said, what will work? LOL, it's too many numbers for me, i need lamens terms! LOL thanks brian! brain, brian g! What supply can i use that is cost effective and i can charge from my home and not just DC? one pack at a time or two, doesn't matter. thanks brian!

Nick 09.02.2006 09:42 AM

Brian, why do you use Female deans on the charger?

neweuser 09.02.2006 09:51 AM

probably because his batts have male?

squeeforever 09.02.2006 10:22 AM

The supply has females because males would short easily if it wasn't plugged into something. Nick, were do you see a picture of a charger though?

neweuser 09.02.2006 12:05 PM

On page one. But still need a good power supply that i can pretty much plug and play...

squeeforever 09.02.2006 12:55 PM

There isn't a picture of a charge...Only powersupply...

Because you should always use the female plug on the power source to prevent accidental shorting.

neweuser 09.02.2006 02:45 PM

Would this work as a power supply? http://www.allelectronics.com/cgi-bi...R_SUPPLY_.html

BrianG 09.02.2006 03:21 PM

Not really. It says 222w, but that's for all the supplies grouped together. Note how the 12v line is only good for 6A? That's only 72W. You want about 13-15A on the 12v line. This one is good for 18A on the 12v line and is only $40. The one MM suggested has a higher current rating, but also looks a little larger as well.

[Edit]: Note - there are other cheaper ones, but the guts are probably chintzy. The Thermaltake model in the link is a well-known brand, and has MANY good user reviews.

neweuser 09.02.2006 11:22 PM

Thanks Brian. I got the one you linked. Now for the hard part. What is it going to need to convert???? Thanks for all your help!!!!!!!!!!!!! Will it be able to charge both my packs? Or just one at a time?
