So Who's Going to Get a Nomadio Sensor...

Now that it's ultra cheap?
http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...e/NOM-104.html
At $269 you really can't go wrong IMO. I haven't purchased a new radio system for a couple of years now, and it seems like my MX-3 is biting the dust (decreased range, verified with two receivers and two crystal sets). My money will either go to this or to a battery setup for my 1/8 buggy, but it's looking like it'll go to this new radio because it's so cheap!

squeeforever 09.03.2006 09:36 PM

ME! As soon as I get my LiPo's, a balancer, and a LVC, I'm gonna sell my M8 and get one.

neweuser 09.03.2006 09:53 PM

i would love one, but i also just got lipo! so, as soon as i figure out how to use my lipo, then i can learn how to drive with them, then i can afford a radio after i fix my wrecked truck!!!!

coolhandcountry 09.03.2006 10:01 PM

That is a good deal. I wonder if mike can get them for that.

glassdoctor 09.03.2006 10:06 PM

Is that really a full system for $269? It's $459 at Tower... that's a killer deal.

I would love to have real time temps displayed on my radio.

This deal is cheaper than getting the full eagle tree setup...

squeeforever 09.03.2006 10:07 PM

Yea, its the full setup. No sensors or anything though. Only TX/RX.

HotnCold 09.04.2006 11:04 AM

I got mine - I havent run it yet - but it looks promising - RC-Monster Mike ran his the day of his race - and you all know how that turned out for him. ( hindsight - i should of ran mine that day too - :005: )

coolhandcountry 09.04.2006 11:54 AM

Can the nomadio run on the spektrum rx? I have them and don't want to go thru the hassle of getting all new rx again.

squeeforever 09.04.2006 12:10 PM

I don't think so...I think you have to use the trancievers.

neweuser 09.04.2006 12:35 PM

That's a great deal on the Nomadio!!! Now if he can offer deals on the VBS!!!!LOL, that would be great!

With the latest beta software from Nomadio, you can use Spektrum receivers, but you need to plug your radio into a computer to make the change to DSM (Nomadio calls it "Da Slow Mode" because Horizon/Spektrum trademarked the 'DSM' acronym). You also need to plug in again when you want to switch back to "Nomadio" mode.
As I mentioned, it's only with their beta software and it's a non-supported configuration, so you're on your own when using it, but several people have posted on Nomadio's forum saying it works just fine.

squeeforever 09.04.2006 02:57 PM

That sucks...At least you can use them though...

coolhandcountry 09.04.2006 03:07 PM

For those who have the nomadio. Do you think it is worth the money?
How do you like them?

squeeforever 09.04.2006 03:14 PM

Larry said he likes his..

coolhandcountry 09.04.2006 05:53 PM

Well I figure out problem with mine. I stay with the spektrum for now. It is still a good deal though.

Mikey 09.04.2006 06:10 PM

i have had mine since january and i love it. i have had absolutely no problems aside from when i sheared my antenna (my fault not the radio). it was worth every penny and i say that even when it was $500.

BrianG 09.04.2006 07:40 PM

I really like the transmitter, but the receiver unit is a little large. Really, the only reason I'd get it is for the exponential steering and the fact it can hold more than 3 models...

squeeforever 09.04.2006 07:56 PM

But it talks to you :p...That it's self is a reason. Granted, the transievers are kinda large...

Then I can pretend it's my friend and won't have to talk to myself anymore!

Electric Dave 09.04.2006 08:15 PM

I bought one and paid $519 for it. Still consider it one of the best RC purchases I've made. Great radio...amazing features. I particularly like it because I use it to monitor the voltage of my LiPo Packs, no more guessing when I should stop practicing, the Nomadio warns me and I stop. Easy. Given the new price, I'd definatly go for it. I still have my temp and RPM sensors in the plastic wrap.

squeeforever 09.04.2006 08:25 PM

Hey, nice to see ya around David! Can't wait to get the LSP!

Batfish 09.04.2006 08:41 PM

I was on the pre-order list with Nomadio direct and I've had mine for a year or so now.
I've used it in almost all of my vehicles, in a variety of situations. I like being able to see the voltage on my car batteries, on the receiver pack, and on the transmitter itself. I use the temperature sensors on my nitro truggy, and on any "project" vehicles where I'm trying to learn good gearing.

I've used about 10 different RTR-type radios, a JR2xi, an Airtronics MX3, MX3-S, M8, and a Hitec Aggressor (something or other). Then there's the Nomadio Sensor - I absolutely love this radio. It has a feel that's perfect for me because of the way I hold my radio. Since almost all of my driving is racing, I learned good habits early on and I hold my radio right up to my chest. The ergonomic configuration of the Nomadio Sensor means I don't have to twist my right wrist anymore to hold the steering wheel properly.
Say you're running a receiver pack and you want to know when the rx pack voltage gets to 5.5V - set the rx battery voltage alert to 5.5V and tell the radio to either vibrate in a set pattern, tell you the voltage is low (with either a built-in sound file or one you create yourself), or both. When it happens while you're driving, your chosen alert action will happen and you'll know by feel and sound that your rx pack is at your defined voltage, without having to take your eyes off of the car on the track.
Say you're running nitro and you like to warm up your engine to a certain temp before you start pushing it on the track - set the temp alert to your chosen temperature and your radio will alert you when you've reached that temperature, so you know warm up time is over. On the same note, say you don't want your expensive engine to get over a certain temperature - set another temp alert for that high end temperature and the Sensor will let you know if/when the engine reaches that upper temp, letting you know to get it off the track so your pit guy can make adjustments to get the temperature down.
The temperature alerts are easily as useful on electric, for a variety of similar reasons.

Overall, I can't say enough good things about the radio.
I can, however, say one bad thing about it; the motion of my throttle finger to the brake is too wide. I put a small piece of fuel tubing on the brake lever itself, which helps, but it still isn't as nice as I would like. I've gotten used to the way it feels, so it's not a problem for me anymore, but it may be a consideration for anyone else.
As far as the receiver size being too big; make sure you take that criticism with a grain of salt. The only vehicle I've had a problem mounting the receiver in was my 12th scale pan car. You may have a hard time mounting it in some 18th scale vehicles, too. With nearly any 10th or 8th scale vehicles, you will have NO problems finding a place for the receiver. It easily fits in any radio box that I know of. The receiver itself could indeed be smaller (and I believe Nomadio is working on a smaller receiver) but it may have to sacrifice the telemetry options to accomodate the size.

As with all radios, try and find one that you can hold in person. If possible, try and drive with it before you decide to buy one. Only you can decide which radio looks, feels, and performs best for you.

jhautz 09.04.2006 09:36 PM

Damn.... Realy good deal. I just got a new M11 w/ spektrum. I already had Spektrum receivers for all of my trucks. Had I seen this I might have sold te RXs and made the switch.

Mikey 09.04.2006 10:02 PM

it really isn't that big of a reciever. the v1 was massive and you would be hard pressed to fit into a a boeing 747. but the v2 is about an average size. larger than some but certainly smaller than the stock traxxas one lol those are on par with the v1. i have heard of many who have done the brake mods either fuel tubing or heated it up and bent it inward. personally i have big fingers so it is great for me.

squeeforever 09.04.2006 10:26 PM

Man..I really want one now..

MetalMan 09.04.2006 11:26 PM

It should be about two more weeks before I can rake in the cash to get one. That'll be about a week before the sale ends! My goal is to have all my RC equipment be PC-capable :027: (Mamba Max, Eagle Tree MicroPower).

BrianG 09.04.2006 11:31 PM

I wonder how many people will be selling Spektrums now. Hmm, I could use one more receiver...

neweuser 09.05.2006 12:31 AM

It's a very nice radio. But i know of two people that have had issues with the reciever. Other than that, i would love one. Too bad that they won't be on sale when i COULD GET ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm running the cheapo JR! :(

squeeforever 09.05.2006 06:13 PM

Don't worry, I'm sure that there will be another sale very soon. UE always has a "major" sale like that. It will be back before long I'm sure.

As i said about the mamba 5700 i have, its worth it at twice the price, for the features and things it can do, I love it.

Electric Dave 09.06.2006 08:38 AM

Had a problem with too much space in the brake/throttle trigger. I used the hair dryer method to heat the brake side and bent it in a bit for a custom fit - very nice and easy to do.

MetalMan 09.10.2006 12:15 AM

Turns out I won't be getting a Sensor. One of the guys I work with at my LHS who is a hardcore racer (1/10 electric and 1/8 nitro) said his buddies' Sensor radio systems are rather slow (response time). And after doing some thinking, it might be more worthwhile to get my BL buggy some batteries.

squeeforever 09.10.2006 12:23 AM

I thought the response time is supposed to be the fasted to date?

MetalMan 09.10.2006 12:26 AM

That's what Nomadio says. My coworker said his M11/Spektrum setup is faster.

Electric Dave 09.10.2006 12:02 PM

Let see. On one hand you have a company who makes a claim, one which has to be based in truth and fact. On the other hand you have someones biased "feeling" about one radio vs another. Go for the sure thing.

MetalMan 09.10.2006 12:08 PM

Well, it's too late for me anyways. Just spent a large chunk or cash on some batteries, and then I'll see about getting my MX-3 fixed.

But if I were somewhat made of money (like it seems a number of members here are :004: ) I'd for sure get the Sensor just because of all of the features. On my budget I'd be set back months just by spending that much.
