Fifth scale 2008 F1 Car
Hey guys. Long time no post. I just realized that I hadn't posted my latest project on this board. I started it a month ago and the whole story can be found at http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69302. I'll just post the pics right now.

dude that is SO SICK
|
Sick indeed,i hope it does make it into 3-D.
Does the duel master cylinder have bias adjustment then? Is that the drawing after the master cylinders with the 2 screws in it? What would be insane is if you machined a mold for the wishbones(instead of the arms themselves)and layed them in carbon, and the bodywork for that matter:004: |
Nice work.
I know it's time consuming to design a car in SW that body is neat man. |
The body was especially time consuming. Every time I get something right something else messes up. It's a two steps forward one step back kind of thing. I do like the way it is developing, though.
JB |
I know what you mean. You need to make points absolute by measuring them to another point. (sounds weird, but that's what SW likes..)
|
I like to see pics as you go along. It rocks so far.
|
Can you post a screenshot without the outlines?
|
I too would like to see it without the outline. But great work! I lvoe custom stuff!
|
Hmmm... without lines or a rendered picture? Without lines is a piece of cake but looks horrible. I have no rendering skills and right now and can't work on them as I need to focus on design. The deadline for this project is November 30 and seeing as this has already taken over a month, there is quite a bit of pressure. I'll aim for a high quality (or as high as my computer will allow) rendering near the end.
BTW: I shortened the gearbox, lengthened the shocks, and added 3 batteries. Heres a question for you guys: what batteries would be the best here? The motor is a Lehner 3060 and the ESC will be a Schulze 40.160. Not that there are plans of actually building this project (unless one of you wants to donate around 10k), but what would be a good pack? JB |
Question, if you don't plan on building it, then why is there a deadline? Lookks great, by the way!
|
It's my entry into the SolidWorks Student Design contest.
JB |
Since the 40.160 can take 13s Lipo max., you could go with a 12s or 13s 4000mah setup, using Maxamps' cells.
|
How many aH would be enough for a decent run w/ a 3060 with lower (6 to 10 ish) turns?
Update: Front suspension is (in theory) there. No specifics are worked out, but the shocks, links, mounting towers, etc. are present. I don't know how to do a stabilizer as the mounting is quite different than the laydown style I was expecting. There is not enough space to get decent sized shocks in there laydown style. The rear got an update too. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...suspension.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ransparent.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...ion10_5_06.jpg JB |
Well, today was a big day. Two things happened. One: I became satisfied when I realized that over 90% of the components are present. Two: I realized how much work I have to do in order to make it work. The second one is kind of overwhelming, so I'm trying to push that emotion away for a while so that I can get a big enough boost from the first one.

are u going to make the gears? spur, diff, pinion?
|
Have you incorporated an anti-roll bar yet? I didn't see it in the pictures.
and..............AWESOME JOB MAN! Looks great! SW is very time consuming...in fact it's beyond my skill level currently. I stick with Autocad and CADKEY for now. |
The rear has a blade style adjustable stabilizer. The front needs some sort of anti roll mechanism but I have to figure out how to make one. Thanks for the comments and compliments guys.
JB |
hey man looks like serpent beat u to the f1 but theres is 1/8 scale but it looks the same.

Wow...that is some stunning design work there! Very impressive; I'll be watching this thread very closely. :)
What sort of diff would you plan on using? |
I've actually updated it in two other forums. I didn't think anyone here was very interested in it. I'll make sure to keep you guys up to date from now on. Here's the update:
I eliminated the need for a solid gearbox by adding individual axle mounts. I also stuck another gear in there for massive reduction. I've been having problems with overdefinition all weekend so I didn't get the pusrods in, the left TVP has a couple errors, the steering system is reworked but not completed, and the a arms aren't quite right yet. All in all this project is rapidly nearing completion. What I still have to do: wings, the belt, gear teath, the brake system, all of the fastners, weight shedding, and a final render. I was tempted to put a render in this post but I thought it would be a bit premature. Expect one within the next two weeks but hopefully within a week. The renders look amazing by the way. http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...llview1029.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...shocks1029.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...shocks1029.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...shocks1029.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...toerod1029.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...oy/Diff2-2.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...thbody1029.jpg JB PS: Harm Racing and FG Modellsport also have 1:5 scale F1 Cars. In fact, my car may seem in many respects very similar because in some aspects it is. The front suspension is very different because it has standup shocks and the arms are attached to a chassis plate that is mostly inside of the body as opposed to Harm's and FG's being attached to a chassis plate that is in turn attached to an extended base chassis. This gives the car a much more realistic look. I am sure my differential is different too as I designed it. For me, though, the most important difference is the realism. I designed the body as per 2008 FIA F1 technical regulations paying close attention to every part to make it look real. The tires and wheels are also 1:5 regulation size (FG tire internal diameter gets larger near the body) and the ride hight is scaled as well. Admittedly, I almost always have both websites up when designing to see how they did certain things, but I constantly strive for innovation and improvement. |
very sweet looking ride man.....please keep us updated...and nice work to
|
jagboy dont get me wrong if u were to sell that i would buy one quick, and i have never seen tose other two u posted so i thought that the one i found was after youre a little bit lol good work, keep us updated
|
That thing looks awesome...
|
I modeled the front and rear wings yesterday. Here are a couple of renders. PhotoWorks isn't the easiest thing to use, but hopefully the renders will get better in a couple weeks.

wow thats crazy man nice work and i want one lol
|
Can you show how your wing is connected? one thing i love about my serpent is that the wing doesn't push the car down, but it's connected to the wheels..
|
I've been thinking of how I could do that but it's pretty hard when you have two separate wings like this. What Serpent do you have? Is it the F1 car? I saw that kind of mounting on a 1/8 on road car and was definately impressed by it. Right now the wings are mounted to the chassis but hopefully I can change that in the future. There isn't much choice with the front wing, though.

Front wing is fair easy to connect to the wheels IMO..
very easy. I have got a 1/8th. it uses a Lola body, and it's got a brace on the rear. |
I see a way how you can do it with the two sepperate wings as you use them.
You need to use two parallel moving supports, and mount it to the upside of the rear knuckle. |
The front wing must be attached to the body, though. That's just how F1 cars are. I'm shooting for a super realistic model.
JB |
The way you are using the wing now, can be done like i described.
A real F1 car doesn't exactly uses a TVP either. |
What I mean by realistic is that once it's assembled it looks near real. When assembled, the front wing is attached to the nose cone. I'm not sure if bodywork regs will allow the rear wing to be mounted to the knuckle. I'll check it out, but for now it has to be attached to the chassis.

This weekend was very productive. It might not look like it, but it was. Think of the amount you get done as the graph of an exponential function: the more you get done, the harder it is to do more. A lot of what I did was touch up type stuff. I added the deans connectors with that cool little mount I designed for my Savage. I don't have wires yet because I'm not sure how to do it but they will hopefully come soon. I rebuilt the entire car as a new assembly which helped immensly: It allowed me to go over every single part and find out what I could do to make it better. A lot of the aluminum has chamfered edges which, I think, makes it look better. I added all of the fastners such as screws, bolts, and body clips. The nosecone isn't mounted yet because I havet to figure out how to make it structurally sound. There were a lot of other little things, but I think I'm starting to ramble so I'll stop. Here are some pics:
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...pfront1112.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...uprear1112.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...elecronics.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...erside1112.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...etion11124.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...livery1111.jpg http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a3...etion11122.jpg I'm not extremely happy with the renders and it's pretty frustrating and time consuming to get them right. I hope I can get some good ones this week or next weekend. One thing I can't change too much is the way the rear wings look super bright: they are mostly flat which translates into poor rendering. I'll work on it though. Hope you guys like it. JB |
If thats what they're going to look like in '08, I'll be watching more F1
|
:004: :004: :043: wow man thats amasing i love that
|
Asbsolutely amazing work there!
|
It looks awesome. Have you got any parts made up yet? I like to see the real
deal. |
Yeah man, great job! When do you plan on starting the production?
|
Definately not at the moment. All of the parts are based off of estimations. The car would work, but not very well. A lot of math would have to be done before production. Aside from that, a lot of money would have to come into my posession to make it.
