Altair Nano battery update...
Hey, i just read a new page on the cells, it looks like they have a the following specs:
-2.3 volts nominal (which makes for more pack voltage flexibility/options) -1.6Ah cell, small cell, they say they have various sizes -Energy density: 90Wh/kg (100% at 25'C) very efficient -Super flat discharge curve, performance will be 100% until dump -Temp. range: -50C/-60F to +75C/+165F (-60C discharge) -Discharge rate: 100+ C rate -Charge C rate: up to 50+ (20C charge @ -30C) charge in 1 minute -Cycle life: Over 15,000 100% DOD, then at 85% retention still -annual maintanance: None -Calender life: 20+ years -Safety: With no graphite anode, and thus no SEI layer, this battery is safe to 200'C -Green: no toxics or heavy metals -voltage under load is not known as of yet... hopefully is high, otherwise 100+ C is pointless (not that it isn't anyways) These batteries sound very good, the 90Wh/kg is kinda disappointing to say the least, as all other areas are fantastic. But, it delivers full Ah rating, so it's actually comparable (in real world apps) to standard Lithium Ion, Or A123 M1 cells. I hope to get a hold of some sample packs (not on market yet) for testing soon. Cheers |

I might look into something like that. Although, for people who want a charger that verifies cell count, a dedicated charger is better.

that's true, but for me, i am currently only using A123's (was using IB3600's), and hope to get these 'Nanosafe' cells.
You do not really need a balancer, and the settings on the thing are very stable (meaning it's not stupid) so what ever setting you have it at, it's not changing. For $330, it's pretty good, 0-20volts (.1 increments), 0-10A (.01 increments) and PC programmable, it's nice. You can control it from PC, you can save graphs of charging and stuff... You can also get 0-40 volt, 5A versions, and 0-60 volt, 2.5A versions as well. same price All 200 watts |
how do you like those a123 do that perform better than like 3800 per say.

Yes, from my old IB3600's, they were a world of difference. They perform much better, long runtime, they hold their voltage near nominal for almost the entire runtime until they dump. The best thing I like about them is the safety, durability, and fast charging (i can charge my 5s2p pack in 25 minutes). I can run continuously all day if i wanted with the same pack. Well, 20 mins on, 25 mins off.

I'd be all over the A123's for my T4, but with the diameter being larger, they just won't fit nicely in the tray. :( I'm pretty sure they'll end up in my (yet to be built) BL Emaxx, because at least there's some room there.
Do you have any info on the size of the batteries you mentioned in the 1st post on this thread? |
Yah, it would have been nice if they made a prismatic cell (flat like LiPo's)
Relative to their energy density, they have a low volumetric density so they are a little more bulky... |

nimh's burn too, all cells with a high energy density are dangerous. (even lead batteries, which are still used in allmost any 1:1 car) I bet some people take the weight power ratio over the safety. You don't.. that's clear.. But many others will. Do you smoke? |
Yah, but the thing is that they deliver full Ah rating (or so they show), so it's really not much worse than standard LiPo.
Ask yourself, would you rather have a little less runtime, and have an uber safe pack, you could recharge it in 5 minutes (or 1 minute) and be off again, not be affected by temperature ... and it will last and last. I know which one i will choose. I bet once they become main stream enough, there will be a 50% of ppl will use them. It should be expected too that energy density will only improve, and voltage under load. What was LiPo's at market entry, i think it was just over 100 Wh/kg, and now it's up to almost 200Wh/kg, but thats low discharge 2C type LiIon's. Do I smoke? what is that supposed to mean? |

Some companies claim their lipo's don't burn(truerc) they can puff, but they won't catch fire. Yes, energy density will improve, but so will the energy density of normal lipo cells. I think the future will bring something totally different. I thought Dafni is currently working on a fuel cell project/investigation. |
fuel cells have no future in RC, EV's, laptops, or any other form of energy storage.
It's simply propaganda from the oil companies/powers that be... it requires a fuel, so long as you require a fuel, they will be in power. We need to get rid of the word 'fuel', it is a stone age idea. Fuel cells are far to expensive, far too complex, require platinum in the cell, pumps, pumps, gadgets, too many things to go wrong, and no more efficient than gasoline from "well to wheels" energy tracking. The storage problem is still prevalent, leaking straight threw material. When it comes to electric, with batteries that last 15,000 cycles, and very efficient; we can plug into the grid, BUT you can get it from any source you want... solar, wind, hydro, or some other source of natural power. I see zeropoint energy in the near future however, hence my name. Unlimited energy from the Quantum scale vacuum. :eek: |
