I think I just fried my 1/18 Mamba 6800 Motor

I was running in the snow and had use saran wrap to seal up my chassis. I came in after ~15 minutes (3S 1500mah Lipo's run forever...I think I've gotten like 40 minutes of full throttle before). Anyway...the motor was SO hot that it waws able to melt a pretty large chunk of snow and then boil it into vapor!!!

OOPS!!!

I took it for a run today and left the motor completely exposed. It ran cool (ambient temps ~10* F). It seemed to run fine, but I can't tell until I get some traction. Snow driving with a Mamba 18T mostly involves rally-like driving over ice and flat, packed snow).

So...is my motor fried? It seems ok while driving, but logically I would think it shoul be toast.

PS. Its awesome rallying around on the packed snow...I love the 4 wheel rooster tails...

well, I don't really know about your motor, but i got my 6800 up to 310F:035: . It wont stop cogging now. I think mine is fried....

Bye:018:

BP-Revo 12.30.2006 01:08 AM

I think my motor was at like 400...but yea...

BrianG 12.30.2006 01:33 AM

Wow, 300+ degrees! :dft002:

You guys are brave!

MetalMan 12.30.2006 01:57 AM

If it runs, then it can't really be fried. Most likely the motor went through a loss of power from the rotor de-magnetizing due to excessive heat. But if it runs, it runs!

go4gold 12.30.2006 02:42 AM

Yeah what MetalMan said. It' probably fine but even a light overheating in the future may fry it

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 12.30.2006 04:49 AM

Castle says that 200* should be the max for these little motors. So i'm thinkin 300-400* may be just a tad on the warm side?

MetalMan 12.30.2006 11:16 AM

It is, but BP-Revo needs a temp gun to know hot hot it actually got :027:.

JOHNNYMAXXIMA 12.30.2006 02:55 PM

Temp guns are only about $25 right? Where at in So Cal is BP-Revo? Maybe he could stop by your store Metal and you could hook him up with one.:027:

MetalMan 12.31.2006 12:39 AM

He lives only like a mile or two from the Hobby People I work at, and he has stopped by. I think I offered him a discount on the $25 Duratrax one, which would bring it down to something like $20, but he didn't seem interested at the time :). He can use mine when we go bashing next week.

Now that he wants one, you should charge him $30! :p

BP-Revo 01.01.2007 03:11 AM

Eh...I'll go by the "If it runs, it runs" rule...the fact that its so fast I can barely control it above 1/2 throttle means I won't notice a drop in power unless its something like a 30% drop lol...

I know the motor was at a REDICULOUS temp...it melted a chunk of snow a little larger than the speed control and then boiled it off all within a second or two. It actually did that to like 10 peices of snow...so I know it was REALLY...REALLY...hot.

Funny thing is though, I was running it the other day. And even though my motor can was too hot to touch for more than a second or so, my rotor was still cool... any thoughts on this?

It actually did that to like 10 peices of snow...so I know it was REALLY...REALLY...hot, you know that isn't the smartest thing to do...to check temps........you could have just licked your finger and tested it that way....but to testit with clumps of snow...just wasn't to bright IMO, i think the next tiem I run my truck and i want to test the temp of it, i'll throw a cup of water on it and see if it boils off...........snow turns into water when it melts, also the sudden cold on stuff doesn't help things either......but hopefully the motor is allright, but i think you messed it up by super heating it, and then melting snow on it......and hopefully no water seeped inside any where......best of luck figuring out what is wrong with it......

BP-Revo 01.01.2007 02:53 PM

At the temp it was at...I dont think snow was an issue...

coolhandcountry 01.01.2007 04:14 PM

If it still works keep running.

sjcrss 01.01.2007 05:12 PM

well if it still works, lucky you....but didn't you know snow turns to water when it melts, and water is bad for electronics period......

BP-Revo 01.01.2007 09:12 PM

Its just the motor...brushed motors work fine even totally submerged in water...BL motors should work fine too...the motor itself is even less complicated than a brushed one.

Plus...how is getting a little water on the motor can going to be so bad?

sjcrss 01.01.2007 09:19 PM

i know brushed motors run fine in water, that is one way to break them in.....but considering how much a Bl motor can cost...I'm not willing to try that...so BY all means let us know....I for one.....won't subject my electronics to water unless on accident, especially a Bl motor......

BrianG 01.01.2007 09:36 PM

The motor is probably not going to get harmed much with water, but I would be more concerned with the ESC. Typical ground water has minerals in it that are somewhat conductive and could cause problems with some of the sensitive components in an ESC.

sjcrss 01.01.2007 10:10 PM

well said brainG

BrianG 01.01.2007 10:20 PM

Why thank you. :)

Something else: Parts may rust if they are using uncoated steel...

BP-Revo 01.02.2007 01:26 AM

Yea...my bearings are shot. No worries though...I'm ordering some Rubber Sealed ones soon.

I didn't do things quite as thoroughly as I normally do because I basically rushed the truck together so I could bring it to the snow. Had I not wanted it in the snow, I probably would have built it during my spring break instead...

Sylvester 01.02.2007 11:55 AM

Just make sure those bearings are up to the task of the high RPMs these little motors can put out!
