Telemetry Question
I just got the Spektrum telemetry module and I am putting it on my brushless Revo. It has one temp probe, and my question is should I monitor the temp of the motor, ESC or battery (I run two batteries so I would only be able to monitor one)? Any comments?

Depends.
You could put it on the device that has more history of getting hotter. Or, you could put it on the most expensive device. If it were me, I would put it on the ESC since electronic components are more sensitive to heat. |
I'LL SECOND THAT. I plan to buy the Eagletree Data/Telemetry system. That alows for multiple temps, multiple RPM's, Current, voltage, etc. etc. more money but does much more.
For now, I say monitor your ESC. |
third the ESC. It is a very important part of the car plus is is the most susceptible to heat issues.

I would say the motor. Usually ESCs have a thermal protection feature, but sensorless motors don't.

From your experience.............. What are the odds of a sensorless motor "burning up" before the ESC "feels the stress" and heats up itself??? |
I would have no idea. I've never burned up a motor. My guess is that the only way to do that would be to run an ESC with high current capabilities with a motor that is smaller and doesn't require too much current. Then, you could overgear the motor and the ESC might not heat up too much, but the motor would get very hot. So basically, it depends on some factors.

i would try and switch it up a little, monitor your esc, and then monitor your motor.

It moniters engine temp , voltage of batts, timer, and lap system if i am correct.

what about fuel scince its made for nitros.

if you mean how full the tank is then no but you could check the fuel if you have a clear tank but if your in a race this would not be in your best intrest.

That wouldnt be easy as you'd need a floater to check fuel capacity.. Would be a cool addition, though!

sounds like an invention whos up for it. LOL it would be good thought becuase they know when to pit getting the most out of there run like mike said.

Good invention, but not worth the time imo.
If the drivers have a day or so to practice, they will know pretty much when to pit (1 lap before the tank is almost empty) so they dont run out before the motor just goes ~BRRRRRRRRRRR~ lol. |
With all the fuel sloshing around in the tank due to vehicle angle (including upside down) and bumps, it would be very difficult to make an accurate general purpose fuel level indicator. The best way I can think of is to make a fuel flow meter in the actual fuel line. You'd have to somehow program in the fuel tank capacity so it knows how full it is.
Easier to do away with fuel issues by going brushless. :) |

If you wanted to know exactly when it will dump, you'd just need something that will measure the current of the battery (like the Eagletree), calculate Ah and then tell you when you reach 85% if the battery capacity. |
man i dont have my lipos yet but i was driving the mini micro t and someone said the battery just stops just like it is lipo so i drove it. While driving it i was having fun the whole time and the voltage seemed to be the same and all of a sudden while going like 15mph is breaks immediatly and the battery died it was like a slow break the cutoff was so defined it was like a line that when it crossed it just shut down.
Sylvester- Yes i very much di agree with that statement -Brushless rocks!!!- but seriously when you are using 8000mah maxams batteries and you are at the track racing w/ the nitros and they pit for fuel 6 to 7 times and you are still going it really make them think twice about Electric. |

it was a standard mah but for some reason it seemed to have the characteristics or a lipo, Like total overpoweringness instant wheelers, and a cutoff at the very end of the battery that goes from full speed to 0mph in about 3 seconds and it stayed dead it was the weirdest thing i guess it was just because it was 4 cells and that might be why it does that. strange really
