Brushless Cen Genesis

Hello!
Im quite new user here and im from Finland, so sorry for my bad english :027:

Im converting cen genesis to brushless and im buying a new motor to it. I have already bk 20xl06x motor and 12020 controller, and I think the motor will be too hot.. So what kind of motor would be perfect?

Some specs:
  • Weight about 9 Kg containing lipos, motor and esc..
  • Center diff locked
  • Stock gears (pinion 17 and 21 tooth) and its 3 speed

If someone could show me the light I would be very happy :027:

Closest i could come for info for you is a GST 7.7 which should be nearly identical http://rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=4495, and welcome to the forums

What lipos are they? A neu or lehner are the top notch motors out there.

jhautz 01.31.2007 02:31 AM

9kg is a heavy truck.:dft002: I would say that you want the Lehner 1950 for sure. The Neu 1515 would be an option but your BK12020 controller will not run a Neu 4 pole motor.

Couple questions. How many cells are your lipos? What is the capacity and C rating of them. For something that heavy I would say you want as much voltage as possible. You should consider running 6s (22.2V)Lipo if you can. On 6s lipo the 1950/9 would be a nice choice. Plenty of torque to get that big beast moving. :027:

I'd love to see some pictures of you truck if you can post some.

Aquwt has a 2280 on his

Yes I saw aqwuts conversion its pretty crazy :005: . But the thing is that I dont have so much money for lehner + controller. Finedesign has the same conversion even with smaller controller, how is that possible and they say it runs even better than stock genesis..
I started this project about half year ago and I just want to get that dam thing to move soon :027:

Right now I have two 11,1 V 4200 (12 C) robbe lipos, so pretty bad lipos.
I try to get some photos soon..

Welcome Hardstyle! i think it would be wise to get a lower KV motor. it would work with the one you have though, but you need to gear it tall, (same goes for the lipo´s) it will work, but you need to gear it for a low speed.. the motor still is hot though.

If you can swing it get a lower KV motor. (on 6S a 9XL or even a lower KV would be nice) perhaps the Robbe lipo´s are numbered with caution and maybe they can push out more.

The XL motors can pull that sled, no worries.

Hardstyle 02.01.2007 12:25 PM

Ok! I have ordered 9xl but there are some difficulties in bk-electronic so I can still change the order to lower kv, would 10xl be better or maybe even lower?

Im thinking of buying new maxamps lipos, but im not sure can I use my old charger to charge them? My charger is robbe lipomat 5-4000 and it charge lipos by using voltage sensor socket.

Serum 02.04.2007 06:40 AM

What speed are you looking at? Sorry for the late reply.

Hardstyle 02.04.2007 08:04 AM

I know with that motor I cant get any crazy speeds but, something around 50 to 60km/h. So if it could go a bit faster than the nitro version, I would be happy :027:
What motor/lipo set would be good. Im thinking that I buy them from here, would that be wise? And second thing about the charger, can I use it to maxamps lipos?

Serum 02.04.2007 08:08 AM

What i would do to toss that sled around;

warrior 12020
6S2P maxamps 8000mAh cells
10XL/11XL

that would be good for nice runtime/power.

Hardstyle 02.04.2007 08:21 AM

Ok thanks!
I look into it, just in case I try 11XL...

Serum 02.04.2007 08:26 AM

12XL would work as well. Longer runtime.. you made a wise choice in not trying to make it a 50mph truck...

Hardstyle 02.04.2007 08:32 AM

Heheh, Maybe in future :005:

Serum 02.04.2007 10:32 AM

If you get good batteries, you might succeed in doing so with a higher KV motor.

Hehe something like that :027: .

Anyway I got some terrible pics for now :p I Try to get some more in future..

Seems like quite some aluminum!

It looks nice! where did you get that heatsinks from? and is that pinion from FD?

Hardstyle 02.05.2007 03:36 PM

Those are Team integys heatsinks, there supposed to be fans over them, but I tooked them away, in other words they were broken.
http://www.medasec.com/prod_pics/cooleri.gif.popup.jpg

And yes the pinion thing is from Finedesign

neweuser 02.05.2007 04:21 PM

That thing is a beast! Nice job on it man! Let us know how it runs for ya!

Hardstyle 02.06.2007 03:42 AM

Thanks guys :027: .. For sure, first I just have to order the parts and then I try to get some video asap..

Hardstyle 02.06.2007 02:59 PM

Allright I probably order the parts tomorrow :004: . So do I need anything else to get my Gen moving.

These are in my list:
  • Two maxamps 11,1 V 8000 Mah lipos
  • Bk 12XL motor
  • Some extra bearings for the motor

Do I need Lipo saver?

Sylvester 02.06.2007 03:13 PM

Yes, you need the lipo-saver and a UBEC.

Hardstyle 02.06.2007 04:09 PM

I think I will use external receiver pack.

How many cells this saver can take? And do I need that on both lipos?
http://www.rc-monster.com/proddetail...rod=lisavercar

Sylvester 02.06.2007 04:43 PM

You only need one, its good for up to 12s.

Hardstyle 03.04.2007 01:49 PM

Weee! The stuffs has arrived :004: .. I mounted the motor to it place, so tomorrow I try to get some pics and maybe some video in action :027: . But still had to do plenty of things first..

Btw I saw this video on other forum, Brushless Nemesis  http://www.myvideo.de/watch/940850

Serum 03.04.2007 01:54 PM

Yeah, that's a 24 cell strong 2230/17 with a schulze 40.170, he is using a planetary 6:1 reduction.

it took him quite some time and effort before he had the driveline in tact..

Hardstyle 03.05.2007 04:54 PM

Ok..

Now I have little problem with the maxamps lipos. My charger uses this kind of socket to charge the lipo (white thing)

<a href='http://www.imagefap.com/image.php?id=96391491'><img border='0' src='http://images.imagefap.com/images/thumb/35/963/96391491.jpg'></a>

Here is maxamps and robbes connectors:
<a href='http://www.imagefap.com/image.php?id=342775461'><img border='0' src='http://images.imagefap.com/images/thumb/30/342/342775461.jpg'></a>

So my question is that can I change the robbe connector to maxamp lipo?

Hardstyle 03.06.2007 02:05 PM

Can somebody help me with this charger thing :)?

I have another question about the esc connectors. There are 2 sets of wire (black and red) coming out of the esc. So how should I connect the deans so I can put the lisaver to it?

BrianG 03.06.2007 02:13 PM

The Maxamps pack comes standard with Hyperion style balance connectors. You have a couple of choices as I see it, from easiest to hardest: 1) Use a Hyperion to robbes adaptor. 2) move the wires around in the Hyperion connector so they mate up correctly to your balancer. Then, you might have to trim the plug. 3) Cut the balancer connector off the pack and use a robbes connector instead. If you mess with the balancer wires, MAKE SURE THEY DON'T SHORT TOGETHER while working on them!

As to the dual wires on the ESC: you can solder both reds and blacks to a single Deans. It may be difficult but it is possible. Alternatively, you could make a Y adaptor cable so both reds go into one red, then to the Deans - and do the same for the black.

Hardstyle 03.06.2007 02:30 PM

Ok Thanks! I will continue tomorrow, but now im too tired to go on :025:

Truck is almost done, only the connectors has to be done and some little things..

glassdoctor 03.06.2007 02:36 PM

I think I would look for an adapter... or make one by getting a matching connector for the pack's hyperion tap and splicing it with the charger's tap.

Did this charger come with any connectors/adapters?

Really this is a charger-specific issue... there are som many different connectors for all the chargers, batteries, balancers... it's a nightmare sometimes making everything work without a bunch of work, lol.

Hardstyle 03.06.2007 04:08 PM

Unfortunately there was no adapter with it..

But there are also another connector in the charger that (blue thing) :P. It works so that you just screw the 4 wires straight to it.. I think that would be the easiest way to charge, but those wires must cover somehow when running them... Any ideas?

BrianG 03.06.2007 04:25 PM

Just use an adaptor that has bare wires on one end (for the screw terminals), and the male Hyperion connector on the other to go to the pack. I know it's not ideal, but until all manufacturers use the same connector scheme, it will never be ideal.

Don't feel bad, my own "adaptor box" is getting quite full. :)

Hardstyle 03.06.2007 05:07 PM

So I have to get somewhere hyperions connector right?

BrianG 03.06.2007 05:40 PM

Yeah. Maxamps has them on their site. And Mike may have some (not in the RCM store though) if you email him. Just make sure you hook them up right and you'll be golden.

Hardstyle 03.08.2007 01:34 PM

Ok thanks, I asked that from mike but he havent answered me yet, he is prolly too busy.

Anyways got my gen finished (allmost) :004: . And I tooked it little test on the yard. I have to say damn what an acceleration :005: , only pulled the trigger allmost to the half of it and it sounded like that the wheels were spinning still , hehe. At the end the pinion got loose because I didnt put loctite to the screw..

Next week I might get new battery holders and I have to solve the charging thing..

Some pics from today (wires, esc and lipos are just temporary assembled :))

BrianG 03.08.2007 01:43 PM

Man, that's a big truck. That "little" motor looks lost in there. :) Looks good though.

I can't tell; did you keep the two speed installed? Did you run it with the stock engine? If so, how does it compare during the short test run? From what I understand, the stock engine is quite powerful, but that's only from what I saw on a buddy's truck...

Hardstyle 03.08.2007 02:25 PM

Hehehe.. Its three speed, stock gearbox. I have just locked the center diff..

Yes I have driven that with the nitro engine but I never got it to run properly (which is the main reason why I changed to brushless) :005: .. But what I can tell about that short running that the motor is like TNT, its like explosion when accelerates. Its so immediate..
But next week I might got something more to say about it and Ill try to get some video..
