Cold Fusion is ready to roll...
Hey guys,
Some of you lot might remember when I posted about my Wild Dagger called Cold Fusion a few times quite a while back (I was harping on about going brushless, etc). Well a lot of time has passed, a lot of work done, and seeing as I've learnt so much from this place I thought I'd post about the finished item.:018: Here she is. I've literally just finished installing the electronics, and I'm absolutely busting to give her a trial run! http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1296.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1297.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1302.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1304.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1307.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1308.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v6...r/HPIM1309.jpg I won't go through the list of modifications right now as it's pretty huge, but it's powered by a pair of Mamba 5700 ESCs and motors. These are fed from two 8-cell Elite 4500 packs wired in parallel and then split to both motors...and WOW does it kick out some power! I haven't run it yet but I did do a quick throttle test with the wheels of the ground and crikey...I know you guys are all used to this, but the tyres were turning into pizza-cutters by 50% throttle lol!:026: The truck as a whole is designed to be able to compete as a racer (even though it fits no official classes); handling has been my main focus and I've done all I can to make it as good as I can. I know it won't match a race-bred truggy but I'd like to think it has at least a fighting chance, lol. Hopefully I'll be able to take the truck out for it's first run tomorrow, and a friend has volunteered to video it for me...so I'll be posting that on here. According to several speed calcs, it should have a top speed of around 55mph so I'm pretty scared to be honest! I have almost all the settings on the Mambas turned right down (with punch control at 100%) to help spare the drivetrain, so hopefully there won't be any mechancial issues. Wish me luck! Thanks for looking, and thanks for all the help you lot have given me over the years. I've not posted much but I do lurk, and you've all been massively helpful.:018: |
Wow, very nice custom truck!
|
Thanks! :)
By the way, sorry that I posted this in Gen Discussion...I meant to put it in Brushless. If any of you mods want it moved then be my guest! :) |
Very nice looking rig.
|
SWEET! I remember the first thread on this. Nice job!
I only have one word for you.... VIDEO!!!!!!:D |
I remember it dagger thrasher. It looks good. I like the body you choose.
That thing should fly. |
Nice...can't wait for video :004:
Why is it everytime I see a highly modified brushless vehicle Disturbed's "get down with the sickness" automatically starts running through my head?? Do I need help?? :002: :005: pinolelst :007: |
That thing is sooooo awesome!!!! :004: :004:
Have fun with it. |
looks very good. :027: :028:
|
dude that thing is sweet
|
Incredible!!!
|
For those that like to see it before.

wow it came along just perfect! Thats just amazing. what arms are those? UE?
always thought that the desert Rat body would look nice on any mt. |
Wow, it has really come a long way since how it used to be.
|
Awesome! Looks really good! Any idea of the total weight of this beast?
Bye:018: |
Your truck looks really nice.
|
That's one hell of a nice ride!!!
|
Hey Dagger Long time no see..
That is the truck I was trying to remember the name of the other day. What a coincidence I see your post..hehe Looks great! One of the best if not the best dagger I have seen and liked. |
Thanks guys, I really apprciate your comments! I did plan to do the first run and get a vid today, but we got about 6 inches of snow (a lot for the UK!), so it had to be called off. :frown: With a bit of luck it'll be going by the weekend.
Coolhand: Thanks man, you've always been encouraging with this project. The shell has had quite a bit of cutting done to the wheel arches as it's quite a wide shell...the front wheels would rub badly when they steered. Still, it's sorted now.:027: Thanks for finding the old threads too...although some of those old pics make me cringe, lol! :020: Mike L: Cheers dude.:018: Nope they're not UE, they were made by a company called R2C2. They no longer exist and didn't make many sets of the arms unfortunately, and they're not very beefy so won't take much abuse. But they are very lightweight, so as long as I don't pile this thing into a wall then they should be just fine. Cemetry Gates: Thanks. Total weight of the truck ready to run is about 3.7kg, so she's not too heavy.:027: Chase: Good to hear from you man, thanks for the kind words! How's the project Juggy coming along? |
Very nice Dagger Thrasher! I remember the first thread of this truck. Turned out to be one hell of a truck! I think i saw a vid of your truck on a box giving it throttle, i saw it on youtube, im pretty sure it was yours. You've come a long way man!
|
It has changed alot since first pics. Just give you something to compare how
far it has come from. Have you got a test drive in yet? |
That is a work of art!!
|
Thanks guys...Sylvester, yep that sounds like my vid! It scared the heck outta me too when I did it lol.:026:
Coolhand...well I haven't done a proper test run yet but I got the chance to just take it out for 5 minutes on the road in front of my house to try it. There wasn't much room so I couldn't get up to any sort of speed, but WOW. Although I didn't get it above 30, the responsiveness was noticeable straight away! I have punch control set on 100%, along with motor timing on the lowest. Start power is medium. Whenever I was even slightly aggressive on the throttle, the front wheels would be scrabbling for traction (although it was damp on the road). Then I plucked up the courage and hit full throttle for about 1.5 secs from a standstill; the truck lifted the front wheels right off the ground and flipped over backwards! I know that's nothing unusual with brushless but given the VERY low CG of my truck, the 16 cells, 100% punch control and that it was done by one 5700 motor...I was pretty amazed! After the run the rear motor was warm, front a bit cooler (forgot to use my temp gun), and the transmission seems fine; that's what I worried about the most. I didn't get a vid of this run, but maybe I'll be able to get my friend to do one tomorrow afternoon, in the dry, and in a wide open area. I can't wait! :) |
very nice!:004:
the dagger was my first real rc. |
The rear trans will probably fail first. That sounds awesome.
|
Really nicely done, real clean work you did! When the snow is gone, go test that baby!
|
Thanks guys.:)
Well it's official, I've done the first run! And WOW it is fast. The road was damp, so grip wasn't great but boy does it move out! I wasn't able to get hold of the guy who was meant to be videoing it, but a friend came over and recorded some clips on his digicam Sorry for the poor quality: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhRLkeVViCU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWjakrGoJoI http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f90jgedSV_s http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1huEQ59PolU http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PPDgiZEgOMo I was taking it very easy in those clips...I barely got above half throttle, it was so fast. Unfortunately CoolHand is right...after this run the rear diff started clicking and acting up. Luckily someone is working on a bullet-proof sealed diff for the Dagger so it shouldn't be an ongoing issue (the CVDs and wheel adaptors are still in perfect shape). Runtime was quite amazing...with the twin 4500Mah Elite packs, the truck ran for 15 minutes before we decided to go inside...and they still hadn't dumped by that point (according to my charger, they still had a good 2000Mah left in them). And as for temps...well the rear motor got to 128F which isn't too bad. It is a pretty cold day though. Thanks for looking, and hopefully once the rear diff is sorted I'll get a proper high-speed video shot. Man, I love this thing!:018: |
What do you think of the Elite 4500's.
I recently got two 7 cell packs (14 cells at a time) for my brushless E-maxx and the seem pretty good so far. Better than my GP 3300's for power, and obviously for run time as well. I haven't heard of many other people using them, but I'm not sure why. The only thing I don't like about them so far is that the are not matched. But there fairly cheap. |
Cool video's. Looks so much fun.
|
It looks to handle very well. That is pretty cool. I like the vid.
|
Nice vids Dagger! Pretty quick. Hopefully that diff comes out soon enough!
|
Well the gy who's designing it is kindly going to send me the prototypes to test (he plans to make a "normal" 6-spider sealed diff and a Torsen). He plans to use the existing dagger glass-fibre reinforced nylon teeth ring for both designs (you need to see a pic really if you've never seen a Dagger diff), keyed into a 7075 aluminium main cup. This will then house the 1/8th scale diff parts, although he's not said which actual make. He's not said that much at all about it really, but assures me it's going to be uber strong! :)
|
wow, you did a great job on this, looks really nice, and saw the vid, looks fast!!
|
Nice video....
Cool someone's making a bulletproof diffs for WD/TD...Is it the same guy that made your chassis? Keep us updated |
Dang bloody cars! You need to put up a road block, hee hee. The last clip looks like you opened it up for a second... looks pretty quick :)
|
Cant wait to see it on some dirt! :)
|
I would like to see it with a little more room. I bet it would get down.

Sorry for the late reply guys. Tell me about it tho, I am busting to get this thing to a biiig carpark or field and see what she can really do! But before I can do that, I've firstly got to get this diff issue fixed...and secondly get a decent radio system. I'm STILL using a 27mhz AM radio *hangs head in shame* which is suffering from serious range reduction...so I'm looking at getting myself a Nomadio React as soon as I can afford it. From what I've seen, this truck has a lot of speed to be unleashed lol!
Truckbasher: Nope, different guys. The guy designing the diff lives here in the UK, and work is slowly going along...although there might be some problems (such as finding suitable diff outdrives, etc). Hopefully it'll go smoothly though. The ability to use diff oils will certainly be nice...everytime CF corners under power, the front diff unloads like it's going out of fashion lol. I should mount a truggy wing on this thing too, but fitting one could be tricky. Quote:
|
Great to know your getting "local support" :027: ...I hope things will work out fine. I guess you'll be fitting at least a 6mm outdrive or a buggy diff would definitely make CF fly :028: ...
Cant wait for the next video |
