New toy!!! Good... and bad. ;)

Yoda: "A great disturbance in the force, I feel." :005:
Yoda: "Hard leassons, must you learn. Much regret you will have." :005:

Ok... I went to the LHS to see if they had the new 8ight-T... sure enough there were 2 coming in, so I hung around until the FedEx guy showed up so we could check it out. Pretty sweet, esp since I got the buggy already.

So I told myself that I could sell off the Jammin and splurge on a new truck. :004:

As soon as I get some CNC mounts done... my CRT is up for grabs I guess.

So, I got this new truck... but the dark side got me to put a nitro in it. :036: :020:

It comes 90% built... with brakes, throttle linkage etc already done. And I have had this nice .21 and stuff sitting around since I got the CRT last summer... and I'm going racing this weekend. So now I'm racing brushless AND nitro.

But not to fear.... I plan to convert it soon enough. (*applause*.... ) :027:

glassdoctor 03.02.2007 04:47 AM

I can't find the thread about the Mamba/hardwiring... so I'll post a comment here...

I hardwired the MM/1512 in my 8ight yesterday... and no proper testing done yet, but it looks real good in a quick test in the garage. It had very smooth start-up... better crawling than before I think. And it didn't cog once when being gentle with the trigger. I did get it to cog with a quick 3/4-full throttle stab. But it seemed easy to avoid cogging.

We'll see what happens this weekend... I'm planning to go racing. I've got a good feeling about it this time.

BTW,... BrianG and I are in a blizzard here in Iowa right now, literally. Crazy snow and wind. Almost all the major highways in the state are shut down.

I hope the roads are clear by tomorow evening or I won't be racing. :mad:1

gixxer 03.02.2007 07:29 AM

can you take a picture of them both together? Just want to get a size comparison.

glassdoctor 03.02.2007 10:54 AM

I can probably get that done... but I haven't snapped any pics yet.

They are very simliar is size... except for the wheels :D... the losi rolls on large diameter, skinny wheels. They are about the same dia as 40 series wheels, with narrow race tires like the proline mtr series.

BrianG 03.02.2007 11:13 AM

I can't believe you installed a Nitro - for shame! :mad:1 :005:

I was over there yesterday because Mike wanted to see my buggy and I saw that 8ight T sitting behind the counter. I was a little interested, but now I've done a buggy already (I know a buggy is a little different than a truggy, but the differences are minimal IMO), I'll probably do something different.

We got to talking and those guys at HH really don't like sensorless! I think seeing the troubles with the MM/Neu just confirmed their opinion. I tried to tell them that the software in the controller really can make a difference, but they really weren't listening. GD, IIRC you have a Quark don't you? You should use that because I think you'll really like how smooth it is compared to the MM.

glassdoctor 03.02.2007 11:20 AM

I did finally put the Quark in the truggy the other day. It is real smooth... and no cogging in my livign room, lol. I hope the MM can do that someday.

I will be taking a few laps with it if I get to the track tomorrow. But now I will be racing the 8ightT instead unless something goes wrong with the *cough* nitro thing.

:D

Yeah, the guys don't like the cogging on from my MM/Neu at all... or the glitchy issues I have seen when racing the MM systems.

jollyjumper 03.02.2007 03:13 PM

hey GD, does the truggy have 17mm hexes?
and how much offset are the wheels?
thank you.

Serum 03.02.2007 04:28 PM

Holy cow GD, i was enjoying reading this story, untill you started mentioning the nitro part.. Crap.. There goes another weekend of joy..

One question (since i was leaning towards one too) are these turnbuckles of titanium or is it steel? i LOVE the looks of the big size buggy tires on it.. It's one neat ride.. Plus the threaded shocks... Tempting, tempting..

glassdoctor 03.02.2007 05:14 PM

The turnbuckles look like Lunsfords... but they are steel, not ti.

Yes the wheel are 17mm truggy size... the offset I'm told is the same as the new "1/2 offset" proline/ofna wheels.

Looks like I'm off to the races... through the blizzard. So I'll check back in late tomorrow probably.

Serum... I want to make it brushless pretty bad, but I had to at least see what the nitro is like and hopefully do well racing. If I can run about as well with the nitro and beat a bunch of the guys, maybe they won't whine about me running the electric, lol...

Dafni 03.02.2007 05:19 PM

Oh Glassdoctor! May your piston get stuck and your conrod break! Shame on you!

:027:

Just playin'! Good luck with the truggy, it's a nice thing for sure. You can still convert it later. And you already have a BL truggy now, so why not compete with both? Nitro has it's cool aspects too.

Congrats on the 8th scale Losi fleet, would love to have them too.

jhautz 03.02.2007 08:04 PM

Downside to racing it in nitro form is if you dont win then they will for sure say you are only winning cuz of the brushless setup. It works both ways. If you are gonna race it nitro. Win or your you could be opening pandoras box.:p

BTW: Im jealous... I want one but have no more room in the stable.... And I cant decide which of them would go in order to make room. Looks like its a sweet truck.

BrianG 03.02.2007 09:20 PM

Who do any have to go? If there's no room, just make a bigger stable! :)

True... I was a little concerned about that, lol. Racing results? :013: :017:

Just what I hoped for :027:

I qualified pretty well with both the BL buggy and nitro truck. The competition is always tougher in buggy, btw. I'm guessing there was 30 buggies and 15 trucks.

Qualified 4th in buggy and 3rd in truck... very good for me. I beat out some fast guys in buggy mainly due to consistency in all three quals... so I overachieved there. In truck I could have been TQ with more time to work out the bugs.. I had 'nitro' issues, lol. :010:

I finished 2nd in truggy and won enough cash to pay for my race fees. Buggy wasn't so good.... I stunk it up in the main with a car that wanted to nose over on about half the jumps... bad. I think the rear was too low and I put the big battery in without checking ride height. I think it was slapping the rear, which kicks the rear up on certain jumps, sending the car nose-over. It was bad... :031:

But the results are awesome for silencing the critics who want to say it's not fair letting me run with them. My first race EVER with ANY nitro... first run EVER for this truck... first time EVER running this motor, etc... and I about kicked everyones butt with it. If only I had it running better.

We had issues with the brakes... throttle linkage... tuning... etc so it was a handful to drive sometiimes.

Man... I wish I could have two of each :005: one nitro and one electric :004:

I didn't break the motor btw, lol...

jollyjumper 03.04.2007 05:13 PM

will you post some pics of the truggy?
thanks, mike.

I had the same trouble, I lapped the MT field with my G2R revo and an hv and was told that it was because it was electric and was no challenge to run. So i showed up the next week with my 3.3 revo and not only lapped them again, but run close to or faster than the electric did. They shut up when i did that

Ok I shot a bunch of pics and even used my wifes fancy camera/flash setup. Lots of body off shots, with the buggy, etc....

Here's the first three.......... one to show some naked chassis, wihtout the pipe and tank, for imagining a better type of powerplant. :020:

These are with Ofna wheels and Panther Switches.... white is perty....

gimmebrushlessgimmebrushleeeeeeeesss

glassdoctor 03.08.2007 02:44 AM

I painted in the night before I went racing last week... thanks!

heehee.... the truck is jealous ain't she?

Serum 03.08.2007 02:52 AM

Using an Airbrush?

the choice of colors is PERFECT !

glassdoctor 03.08.2007 03:04 AM

I used an airbrush to do some highlights and shadows, like under the 'flames', where the colors break, and in the body creases at the rear of the body, etc.

I used the airbrush for the silver too... and rattle cans for the white, blue, and green..

Actually this body is sort of a mix of all my normal paint jobs... an experiment of sorts. I didn't like that it looks like two differnet schemes stuck together.

I used to do white flames on blue. Then I did a couple silver bodies... then went bright with the neon green for all my cars. This was an attempt to blend them all. :D

Mr.lst 03.08.2007 03:45 AM

how does it handle? Will you go brushless?

Dafni 03.08.2007 03:52 AM

Nice rides GD! I like the paint too, you did a great job!
The pictures are also very nice.

jollyjumper 03.08.2007 07:01 AM

sweet lord, its perttyyyyyy!

Sylvester 03.08.2007 09:08 AM

Nice! Needs burshless, thats for sure!

jnev 03.08.2007 11:16 AM

That thing is awesome!! Wish I had the money for one of those right now.

glassdoctor 03.08.2007 12:16 PM

Thanks guys. The truck is pretty nice, but dang... most all the truggies are sweet. :D

Aragon 03.08.2007 12:29 PM

Very nice GD. Hope to see the conversion of it soon. :D

revopqrs 03.08.2007 01:21 PM

awsome trug dude!! thats what im wanting at the moment...

BrianG 03.08.2007 01:30 PM

Very nice GD. And wayyyy better paint jobs than I would/will EVER do! Only thing wrong is the powerplant. ;)

gixxer 03.08.2007 03:40 PM

the 8t looks great. makes me want one to go along with the 8ight. my lhs said he will have 2 in early next week and will give me a good deal on it but I think I am going to hold off. I am not a nitro guy so if I do get it then there is the cost of a new esc, battery, servo, motor.

heck I haven't even raced my converted 8ight yet but I am still tempted.

jollyjumper 03.27.2007 03:29 AM

bump, is it brushless yet???
nitro :mad:1

glassdoctor 03.27.2007 03:32 AM

LMAO .. not yet (remember I do still have the CRT brushless hee hee)

jollyjumper 03.27.2007 07:17 AM

i tought it was sold already.:D
lol:p

jollyjumper 03.30.2007 09:59 AM

hey,
i read somewhere that you where having cnc motor/diffmount done?
any news?
i do hope that was you.:026:
