The brushless serpent 1/8th onroad project!

Arh, it's getting closer to a complete vehicle now..

Here the solid rear axle is still on, it's a balldiff now. One of the sweetest balldiffs i've ever seen.. Lets see if it keeps up..

captain harlock 04.04.2007 01:13 PM

Did you make the upper deck yourself?

It's really tempting me.

Be sure to get a vid. AND try the FUN600 to give me your opinion in them.

zeropointbug 04.04.2007 01:22 PM

wow! Nice Serum, sure looks like a nice setup. Clean, and setup very well. What are the FUN600 motors equivalent to?

Serum 04.04.2007 01:23 PM

Yeah, all is homemade, the fun600 we discussed would be a nice thing. i made the mount so it can hold small till large pinions, giving some nice gearing options, running different KV motors.

I am going to run 5S2P 4400 30C peak pack; the 4S2P is capable of doing a good 1500 watts, so i am looking forward to the ~1900 watts for the 2.5kg heavy onroader

cemetery gates 04.04.2007 01:40 PM

Very nice work Serum! Honestly, it really came out great.

Can't wait to see it all done!

Bye:018:

MetalMan 04.04.2007 01:53 PM

I see a Savage spur gear :).

It looks great! Can't wait to see a vid of this thing.

Serum 04.04.2007 01:56 PM

I spy with my little eye! winner is Metal!

Plan is to gear it to ~60 mph, with the body on these things stick to the road like glue..

Serum 04.04.2007 03:38 PM

There!

finished her.

DickyT 04.04.2007 03:52 PM

Very nice work Serum! When is the maiden run with her?

Sylvester 04.04.2007 03:59 PM

Glad to see its finally complete Rene! A vid is a neccisarity with this ride! Looks beautiful!

Gustav 04.04.2007 04:03 PM

Looks really nice!

Can the MM controller handle it though?I thought it's only officially rated for 3S,or are people running them over spec without problems?

Serum 04.04.2007 04:38 PM

Lets see what the MM is capable of.

running it on 5S isn't something new. It uses a Ubec

The weight of this thing is about 1/2 the weight of an MT. I'll hook up an eagletree and see what it does.

Lets find some nice tarmac...

Technically, 12 cells (which the manual says is ok) is the same voltage level as 4s, nominal and right off the charger. I don't know why they rate it 12 cells and only 3s.

Nick 04.04.2007 05:38 PM

How did you cut the Carbon? It's amazing. The little features like the carbon on the fan really finish it off nicely.

Top work Serum.

Dafni 04.04.2007 05:40 PM

Very nice speed machine! Great work there, Rene, congrats!

A4DTM 04.04.2007 06:38 PM

very nice Serum. Do you have a link to the batteries you'll be using? I think your layout will handle much better than mine. the only reason my packs are on the outsides is because most of the batteries are long and narrow, while it looks like yours will be more "squared".. wanna race? :)

BrianG 04.04.2007 07:01 PM

Serum, that is very purrrty. Should definitely be very fast. Where do you plan to run that?

AAngel 04.04.2007 07:12 PM

Serum,

that is some very nice work. That is, in fact, my next project. We're getting ready to start an on road club down here and the serpent is what I want.

As for the battery, is that the helicopter pack that you are going to be using. I think it's distributed by eflight. Anyway, very nice. If you don't mind, I may be PMing you with some questions, to take advantage of your experiences with the build.

GorillaMaxx360 04.04.2007 08:09 PM

very nice serum let us know how it drives will you be adding this to you website kind of thing so i can view them along with your other projects. this one i mean http://rc.stuurmijmail.nl/

jnev 04.04.2007 11:25 PM

Serum - that is really, truly awesome work. It looks just so perfect. Can't wait to see it run!!:027:

BP-Revo 04.05.2007 12:38 AM

That looks AWESOME Serum. The CF is a work of art (where did you get it - I want to order some CF, but I'm worried about the plate being completely flat, and that plate looks to be very true).

PS. Vids are required. :D

Ditto!

Thanks for the compliments guys! i will get a movie of her on full speed turns. I found a track for 1/8th onroad cars, lets see if they are willing to let me drive..

The carbon fibre is from graphiteelegance.

Currently using this for pictures;

http://picasaweb.google.com/buikpijn

It's easier to maintain than the stuurmijmail site.

Aangel, feel free to drop me the questions you want answered.

AAngel 04.05.2007 01:55 AM

Serum,

I appreciate it. Once I get my kit in, I'm sure that a bunch of questions will come to mind. I will, at the least, want to compare notes to see if your solutions are better than mine. :)

glassdoctor 04.05.2007 09:05 AM

Makes me want to do something with the old (RC150?) 1/8 2wd onroad car I have. It has old stale tires on it and I never wanted to waste the $$ for a new set. But I have been thinking about that car for a speed run machine....

They better! Where else should you drive it!? If you can't race with the nitros, I'm sure they will let you "practice" there.
As for racing, keep in mind the nitros do 60 easy, more like 70 to 80 mph. And with their 2-speed, they accelerate quick! The first time I saw some in person, I could not believe my eyes... snapiest and fastest RCs I have ever seen.

Again, nice work, Rene.

glassdoctor 04.05.2007 10:57 AM

True... it's not like those things aren't already stupid fast. These cars may be the hardest things for an electric to match.

Smoking a 1/8 4wd onroad with electric ain't gonna be easy. But I bet it will be fun trying...

rchippie 04.05.2007 11:12 AM

Rene your car looks really really good :027: .

Serum 04.05.2007 12:17 PM

Thanks Guys!

i know they accelerate like nothing else in nitro form..
I wasn't expecting to win any prices with it, but i am pretty sure if i take the front belt of, and make it a 2wd it is a good candidate for high top-speed.

Serum 04.05.2007 12:40 PM

side-note; 50-60MPH on her is more than enough for me.. As long as it's controllable power, like a buggy vs an MT, you know..

Aragon 04.05.2007 05:10 PM

This looks really nice. Not familiar with this car - is it a conversion from nitro? How much of it is custom work?

I love belt drives. Should be a rocket!

Serum 04.05.2007 05:18 PM

yeah, it's nitro in stock form. motorplate, upper deck, battery holders are custom.

captain harlock 04.05.2007 11:48 PM

50-60mph is an absolute underestimatement of the 1/8th onroaders.
At 80mph, you can drive these with definate easiness.
Let the real world prove it for you.

HotnCold 04.06.2007 08:45 AM

I agree - the first time i drove a similar nitro serpent - it was way too fast - i couldnt believe the handling of it - was so much fun - ( with all the other cars i own ) i had to put it down - or it would of been a bunch more money for another car. Cant wait to see it go...

CrazyPhantom 04.06.2007 12:04 PM

Looks amazing. Let us know when you get a test run in.

grizzle 04.10.2007 07:07 AM

Let us see some videos... :027:

pocket 04.10.2007 10:56 AM

Simply amazing now what you need to do is adapt the same 3 speed system that shumacher uses in their new 1/8th 4wd car
http://www.racing-cars.com/usa/produ...partno=prod982

Serum 04.10.2007 11:10 AM

Welcome aboard Grizzle and Pocket!

thanks for the kind words.!

No need for a 3 speed. wheels are spinning and spinning at any speed.. absolutely no need for the 3 speed.

glassdoctor 04.10.2007 11:19 AM

Serum, can you imagine what would happen wiht a 2sp under full throttle when it shifted.... me thinks the massive torque of the brushless would do naughty things :D

Kinda like trying to drive a Jato on a side street (I have done that... when it shifts to 2nd it does donuts or wheelies and flips)

If the car could hook up it would be cool to watch it kick into 2nd and just destroy the nitro next to it, hee hee

teamtekin 04.10.2007 11:21 AM

Looks very impressive. We are so excited to see 1/8 BL gain momentum.

Here is a nice little video of a BL system using 4slipo that might push this car pretty good.

http://www.teamtekin.com/r1mt.html

Enjoy! I know we did.
