GM single speed availability...?
Just wondering when the GM single speed conversion will be in at RCMonster. So i can order my parts I need.
Does anyone know when Mike will have them in?
I guess it's a matter of a week or so. Don't know.
K, thanks.
Email or PM mike- he's a good guy and will get back to you with a straight answer.
I went and bought it at Gorillamaxx website, I couldn't wait. I just bought alot of other stuff from Mike too.
Hopefully next week I should be up and running. 540 7XL Quark 125 5s2p A123 |
Oh, and Mike said I could replace the pin inside the gear on the input shaft with another one. What size pin, and type of pin do I replace it with?
thanks |
Geh? Not entirely sure what you mean. To do the single speed conversion the only thing that needs modding is the input shaft that needs cutting down as per the instructions you will get with it/ link on Gorillamaxx site shows you how.
He said the pin that holds the gear onto the shaft. The roll-pin.
Has anyone done this before? Or is it even necessary? |
yes that pin needs to be replaced because it is weak under bl power and it will snap under pressure. In novembers issue of 2006 it expains how to fix this problem and mike can definatly tell you what you use to replace the pin with. i was lazy and decided not to follow the mag directions because it tells you to use a drill bit end for the pin (small bit [use part of bit where drill clamps down]) and i dont have that size drill bit so i used a hex size peice and used that as the pin. i used a peice of a 5/64 steel hexwrench but the way i did it i had to file and file and i eventually got it pressed in with some channel locks this way will sure hold but it definatly takes more elbow greese. and there is no garunteed fit.
Nov. issue '06 what?
A drill bit end sounds good, it's good steel at least! |
The article that was referenced is in the Nov.2006 issue of RC Car action, an E-maxx owner said he used a #44 drill bit. He heated the shaft in a toaster oven set at 400 degrees and pressed the pin in with some channel lock type pliers. This may work for you as it did for him but it's not guarnteed to fit. I tried it and it would not fit so I made a pin out of some weld rod that I turned down to size on a lathe. It hasn't given me any problems since. Good luck.
sorry forgot the mag name but yes it is rc action
Well, how many of the ppl here do this mod? Up until now it never even occurred to me. I'll check it! Thanks guys
Well I just broke mine. (e-revo with quark 125B and Feigao 540c 7xl) You might as well do it, when you are doing the single speed conversion anyway. The pin broke and the pices got into the gear - so it´s broke to. Trying to think of a solid way to fix the pin on my new shaft.
My input shaft has drill bits in it and so do about 4 other peoples at racing (could be more). A few years ago when other e-maxx drivers at my track started going brushless (I only went brushless recently) and kept breaking things from the power, the roll pin was one of the things they would break.
i used a hex end. it didn't even go in all the way and it still worked perfectly!
I found a small piece of rod that fit snug. I tacked over the ends to make sure
it didn't fall out. Still going strong. |
Mine still has the stock pin & still going strong.
rchippie what are you running? as far as motors, batteries, weight? Front/rear weight balance has a huge effect on transmission stress.

9L on 14 cells with a strobe slipper & sprong. Weight im not sure my EV0 is done in DAFNI style ( stock chassis ). |
Oh right, I think I know what you ment now- never occurred to me to change that bit- works fine with the stock pin (famous last words).
fello brushless
i have just purchased the gmaxx single speed conversion transmission what broke on yours? so i dont make the same mistake; im running a emaxx w/hv maxx 4.5 turn brushless motor by novak 1/8 truggy gears diffs and a high tork steering sevo and cam locking steering parts do you have any knoledge in that department?how does your truck do aginst nitros.

People put a drill bit or something else solid in the hole to replace the roll pin. Obviously you only need to do it to the bigger gear since your going the single speed conversion. |

oh thanks i get it now;thats good advise!how is the single speed working 4u?im waiting for parts; cam locking bell cranks for steering; multi adjustable shock towers....what kind of steering are you running? |
What do you guys think, should I use some RED thread-lock on the pin I will use just add some extra hold? Probably doesn't need it if it's tight though.
It cant hurt to have a little extra security.

Some of the other guys use the UE steering I thiink, but I'm just using the stock setup for now with a better servo saver and a mid range hitec servo (don't remember what it's called). |
Hitec HS645MG & Kimbrough large servo saver, good items.
If you can, find a proline steering servo, they are great. I use the Hitec 5955, 333oz of torque, I love it too!!!
The only thing that stopped me getting the Hitec 5955 was the price- $110.... good servo though by all accounts.
bought mine for 104.00 at my lhs, well worth it too IMO
i just picked up a 5955tg from an ebay seller (store) that has them for $89! i think he still has that sale going for a few more days, too.
for those that have the 5955, do you notice it 'beep' a lot? the instructions say it's normal and that the servo is just trying to center itself (it happens mostly under load), but it's soooo noisy! esp. compared to my old 645mg. edit: here is the ebay listing. he has crappy feedback score (98%, not bad, but not perfect either) but i got my servo within a few days. |
I find Hitec digital servos to be noisey in general when compared to other brand digitals. Airtronics is nice an quiet.

I myself don't notice the noise when zipping along at 30mph.
