Bearing replacement in 7XL. How hard?
Just got done replaceing the bearings in my Maxx with some Acer bearings. Someone here mentioned replacing the ones in the motors as well. I would like to do this to my dual 7XL's. It looks like the ends are crimped on. How hard is it to take these motors apart to get to the bearings?

All you need to do is smack the shaft one good one and it will come apart...Just don't looks the spacers.

Thanks squee. What about putting it back together? I have Mikes motor clamp/heatsinks so maybe not too big of an issue?

Yea, just tap the endbell back on with a mallet and put the heatsink on to keep it together

I've done this on a few of the BK S can motors. As long as you have the heatsink/clamp to hold it together it's easy as pie. You installing ceramics?

Sure am. Already installed the full set on my Maxx and wow what a difference. Everything spins so freely now. I took the motor apart last night and checked the bearings on that. Ceramics should make a huge difference on that as well. I wasn't impressed at all with the smoothness of the bearings in the motors.

What size of bearing does your motor use? Are you replacing them with the sealed ceramic bearings from Acer?

Yes, ceramic nitride bearings from Acer. Size is 11mmx5mm and it is 5mm wide.

The boca bearings seems to work for me... I wonder how the acer bearings compares to it...

I am very impressed with the Acer bearings. I know nothing about the Bocas though I'm sure they are good as well.
I did a spin test on my diff bearing. Stock bearing spun for about two seconds then came to an abrubt stop. Acer bearing spun for about 15-16 seconds before coming to a stop. I could blow on it and it would spin. Acer bearings are about a $1 cheaper (each) and include free shipping. |
avidrc.com is getting more and more ceramics in as well. $5 each if they have your size.

Will the ceramic nitride hold up to the high rpm's that a bl will put out?

Normal 5x11 bearings that are used in our cars/trucks are 4mm thick. The 5x11 bearings that Feigao uses in their motors are 5mm thick.

So would it hurt to use the bearing that is only 4mm thick? Acer e-mailed me back and said that they don't make a 5x11x5.

Well...it probably wouldn't handle as much load, and it would have to be spaced out. Otherwise, I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I wouldn't do it... The extra load from the pinion gear can put quite a strain on the bearing. And if you're wanting the bearing to last as long as possible, you'll want one that's the proper size.

Well I guess I'm stuck with the stock bearings cause I can't seem to find anyone that makes that size in any type of upgrade. Any suggestions?
