New controllers

Hey guys,

I just dropped by MGM's website and get this, they have a new line of controllers out. I don't know how much is new, but they aren't even listing the 16016 any longer. It is now the 16018 and it's the expert + with programming via the port on the esc.

I haven't looked too closely at it yet. It just kills me because I had to send my 16016 in the week I got it. If I had just waited, I could have ordered one of the newer ones. Should I dare to hope that I get back a newer model in return for the one that I sent?

Check it out at http://mgm-compro.com/index.php?tid=...018-3-car-boat

jnev 06.02.2007 11:27 PM

Cool. I wonder how they will be priced. But it doesn't really matter for me, since I have already ordered a MM.

AAngel 06.02.2007 11:38 PM

Well, you really can't go wrong with a MM. It's a good controller. The only thing is that they don't do the Neu motors very well, yet.

What's_nitro? 06.03.2007 12:22 AM

Wow. I've had my 16016 for about 2 months now and your telling me it's already old technology? LOL :005:

AAngel 06.03.2007 01:06 AM

I had my 16016 for about a week before I had to send it in for repair. I don't even have it back yet and they release a new version with all of the bells and whistles and I wanted in the first place.

crazyjr 06.03.2007 01:26 AM

It looks like the whole lineup got updated , I looked at a few others and they are pretty much the same. Link to the whole lineup: http://mgm-compro.com/index.php?cat=...for-cars-boats

sleebus.jones 06.03.2007 05:05 AM

Wow, impressive specs and features. I like the built in data recorder, switching BEC, cell counts, power capability, pc programmability. All good stuff! The big question is, who's going to release their "big" ESC first? Castle? Tekin? MGM? From the looks/features of this MGM, that could sway me for sure.

OnEdit: Unicard? Wow, that is pretty sweet too! Dragging the lappy with me to the track is a pain.

wonder if mike will have them before the new tekin r1pro?

Serum 06.03.2007 07:56 AM

Thank God..

A brand that doesn't hype up something they promise to launch 'within this year' Lets hope their service gets faster.

Here; anyone noticed this;

SWITCHING BEC CONTROLLERS

New speed controllers with Switching BEC (max. BEC current up to 6A) for up to 18 Ni-XX / 6 Li-XXX cells in all product lines of brushless speed controllers (EXPERT+, Z-series, Race Boat, Car / Boat, HELI).

AAngel 06.03.2007 12:34 PM

My only problem with MGM is the customer service. I bought a Compro a while back and had to send it in as soon as I got it. I haven't heard anything in a month or so. From what I hear, my wait has only begun.

I'd like to try one of the 16018s. Although the R1Pro looks appealing, it is still being viewed as a 1/10 controller by the manufacturer and running an R1 in our application will be considered to be out of spec.

crazyjr 06.03.2007 03:23 PM

I was looking at them this morning and noticed the bec

gixxer 06.03.2007 09:04 PM

specs look very good. to bad I just ordered a quark.

AAngel 06.03.2007 11:42 PM

I emailed them a few days ago about my 16016 and they said that they had just received it. I emailed them yesterday about the possibility of exchanging mine for a new 16018 and what the cost would be. I'll see what they say. I'm hoping that they just threw mine in a pile of "to be fixed" units and boxed up a new one for me. I'm not that lucky though.

BrianG 06.04.2007 12:00 AM

You never know! They might find it cheaper to send you a new one than to repair a defective one, especially since they aren't making them anymore.

You can get lucky once in a while. A while back, I bought the CRT.5, but the CC was never charged. A month later, I sent them an email to question it, but never got a response and still no CC charge - and that was about a month or two ago. Looks like I got a free CRT,5. :)

jnev 06.04.2007 12:16 AM

Lucky!!

BrianG 06.04.2007 12:19 AM

That's what I thought! And I did try to do the "right thing" to resolve the issue, but if the company doesn't want to respond, I'm not going to chase them down!

AAngel 06.04.2007 09:44 AM

Something like that would never happen to me. You made a good faith effort to bring it to their attention. Your conscience should be clear. LOL

wallot 06.04.2007 10:23 AM

Hmm even the prices are not bad (kinda sucks getting stuff made in czech Rep. cheaper from us :) )

coolhandcountry 06.04.2007 04:14 PM

They pushed the 160 down one notch.
The big boy 224amp model has the top big dog spot.
Still handle 18cells and 6s lipo. That is impressive.

Serum 06.04.2007 04:22 PM

Sounds like a candidate for 6S flightpower 5000 cells on a Neu 1515 with a 2200 kv.. make it hot..

suicideneil 06.04.2007 06:30 PM

How bizarre. I was trying to find the MGM website last night using google (didnt know the web address or if they even had a site). As luck would have it I found the site easily enough and wet myself when I saw the new line up of controllers- the 160 amp & 18 cells jobby is just the ticket for me! I would only be running 14 cells max of course, so no chance of frying it unless I dropped it in the fishtank. I like the programming card idea, and the option of using the receiver lead or this new ICS lead thing looks great too for connecting it to a pc/laptop for programming. The prices are good too- £135 ish for the 160-18 model, very reasonable, plus you can pick & choose upgrades like heatsinks etc.

On a side note, I wonder if you could somehow transfer the programming software onto a PDA type device for programming the esc?....

AAngel- let us know if MGM are willing to give you an upgraded model in return/part exchange, and how it performs. Im getting all excited like a school boy.

AAngel 06.04.2007 06:40 PM

I just heard from MGM and they said that there is nothing wrong with my controller. They also said that it would cost half the price of a new controller to upgrade mine. I almost went for it, but then I wouldn't have any guarantee that the controller would work for me, since they said that nothing is wrong with my controller in the first place and I couldn't get it to work properly. I just told them to send it back to me as it is.

Either I'm just an idiot, or there is some sort of incompatibility with my radio or something. I'll try it again when it gets back, but I have a feeling that it's going to wind up in the trash. I waited for over a month just to be told that there is nothing wrong with the controller. The lag time in support is enough to make me hesitant about buying another MGM product.

The specs on the new stuff look good though. I just can't keep throwing money at this stuff. I'm going to sit it out until either the Tekin or Castle controller is released.

suicideneil 06.04.2007 06:46 PM

Thats rather odd. Just what exactly wouldnt work when you first got the MGM controller- symptoms/ motor & radio used with?

waterdog49 06.04.2007 06:52 PM

i'm a fast electric r/c boater with a new interest in electric monster trucks...

have any of you folks ever tried a Schulze 40-160 esc in your 1/8th scale buggie/truggie brushless applications?

pb4ugo 06.04.2007 08:52 PM

Where are you guys finding the prices for these new controllers? Even on MGM's e-shop I could only find the prices in Euros and they were not nice with the exchange rate.

lxmuff 06.04.2007 09:10 PM

I hope the same happens for me too.

AAngel 06.04.2007 09:53 PM

lxmuff, see my post above.

The problem that I had with my compro was that it would not freewheel. I programmed it several times and the freewheeling wouldn't stick. I am running a Spektrum radio. I would have tried a different radio, except that all I own are Spektrums. Besides, if it doesn't work with Spektrum, I don't want it. I have too much money tied up in Spektrum equipment to move on to something else, as long as the Spektrum stuff is serving its purpose for me.

bdebde 06.04.2007 10:51 PM

AAngel, before you throw that MGM in the trash... throw it in the mail to ME!

and if the Lehner doesn't work out for me, i too will likely run 1/10th scale until MMM

AAngel 06.05.2007 01:13 AM

Hey, if that Lehner doesn't work out for you, shoot me a PM. I have a buggy that I was trying to sell that never moved, so I might have to put it back into service. With a 1930 in it, I'd stick with the MM. It's a super controller for 2 pole motors. Perhaps would could work something out.

Serum 06.05.2007 01:40 AM

@ neil; where did you find the price of that controller?

http://mgm-compro.com/e-shop/ There is a link in the top-right hand corner of the home page to the MGM online shop. From there you can find all their products with prices in euros, then just use a currency converter to find the price in $/£ etc.

EDIT: Not all the new controllers are on that site yet, so the prices are for alot of the older stuff- being updated.

wallot 06.05.2007 08:55 AM

they do have pdf price list that can be found in the product description section but only in czech - lucky you that you have me here :)
http://mgm-compro.cz/pdf/cenik.pdf
21.5CZK=1USD so just divide the number there by 21.5

but from what I have seen the older controllers were cheaper in US than in Czech rep. Evene with postage and taxes it would be cheaper for me to get them from Mike, but the new controller prices are quite low

sleebus.jones 06.05.2007 09:21 AM

Ah, so $242 for the 16018. Nice! I can certainly swing that for all the features it has. Now....when can I buy one? :D

That's a sweet deal! Where did you buy it from????? :027:

snellemin 06.05.2007 10:12 AM

I want one too! Are the MGM really built well?! I'm looking for something better for my heavy FLM Rustler.

BrianG 06.05.2007 10:15 AM

lol, you would have to ask that. I just cleaned out my email box a couple days ago and got rid of everything on that. I do remember that when I ordered it, there was a big mix up with the shipping dept. I had to stay on the phone and be transferred back and forth from/to the shpping and store departments until they got it right. It wasn't someplace like Tower or anything. At the time, it was the only place that had them listed in stock since they had JUST come out.

ClodMaxx 06.05.2007 10:19 AM

baaaaah, i hate shipping mishaps and being on the phone to fix it. sounds like it wasn't a freebie - you earned it, lol.

BrianG 06.05.2007 10:25 AM

Lol, I would say I probably "earned" a discount, but a $270 freebie IS a tad bit much. :)

Procharged5.0 06.05.2007 10:30 AM

Hey, I'm just happy to hear that someone I know has had some good fortune!

Awesome!

Serum 06.05.2007 11:30 AM

@neil;

sure i am aware of the e-shop, but the 18 cells 160A controller simple isn't listed. That's why i asked.
