brushless twin detonator?
 

Hi

I just bought a twin detonator and i thought about going brushless ...

I was thinking of getting a pair of feigao 540 8s together with a
warrior 9920 controller and a 3 cell lipo battery.
Is this set up ok or am i totally on the wrong track?

I am new to the world of brushless , so i would appriciate, any help, info or advise on wich setup to get.

Well dual motors is really more than you will need. One L size motor should do it for you.

How many battey-cells are you running?

ok, well a 8s wouldnt be enough torque so an l or xl would be up your ally i think (not sure what a twin detonator is, but if its got twin motor i would asume its a monster truck, lol) if you run twin brushless you would have to get two 9918s a.k.a. 9920 since nobody makes one for twin engines (suck i know). also, a 3s is only 11.1 volts so thats not really enough...mabye a 2s and a 3s (18.5 volts) or just 2 2s' would due, but this is just from what you have told us. more info could help us help you more.

as i said im not sure what a twin detonator is but you will most likely be breaking alot of drivetrain part. if it was me i would get a e-maxx. the e-maxx is a really versital and with only a few drivetrain upgrades it would be able to stand up to brushless power.

if you would be at all interested you can get a brand new e-maxx roller* from ebay for only 169.

there ya go squeeforever. Now I just realized that there is no possible way to hop up the drivetrain from my viewpoint, so hopefully its strong.

well the lipo would be in danger under the chassis like that (not a very good design on tamiyas part), so you would have to figure out some other place to mount it or some way to protect it. it doesnt look like it would hold up to brushless power though.

The twin detonator weighs about 5lbs. I reckon just a single 8s and 9920 would be about the right set-up. A 3 cell lipo would do nicely on this system - but as squee said, you may have problems mounting it on the chassis....

If you want a bit more power you could go for a 9L and either a 4cell lipo, or the 3cell might do well (probably not as fast as the 8s on just 11.1v though)

The TD needs 2 motors, as 1 motor powers 1 axle.

You need two motors to keep 4WD ;)

The gearbox's and gears are fairly tough so that shouldn't be a problem.

if it was me i wouldnt sink that much money in it because it appears that there isnt much of an after market line of parts for them.

think of it this way: if you were to go brushless, you would have to fork out 160-300 (depends on if you get feigao or lehner motors) for the motors, and 400 for the controllers. now if you went with an e-maxx, you would fork out 80-150 for a motor, and 200 for a controller. now the TD you would be looking at spending 560-700! e-maxx you would be looking at 580-650. thats if you got a rtr e-maxx. if you got the one of ebay for 169 you would only look at 450-520 plus rims, tires, body. also, servo and radio if you dont have that stuff

i got a friend who has one with just 550 johnsons and and evx. he keeps breaking the dogbones and the arms keep twisting. he has had alot of problems but it flyes when its not broke.

key words there are "when its not broke"

not to mention those johnsons dont even compare to brushless power. brushless would just annihilate that truck.

The 8s is plenty of motor for the truck, but you would need two motor and controllers to retain 4wd(already mentioned). You would also be best with two battery packs. This would be an expensive undertaking for this truck, and there aren't a lot of upgrades(if any) available for it. Tamiya does build stuff pretty tuff for the most parts, but I would choose another vehicle for the brushless project myself, unless you are very handy and are willing to make what you can't buy.
