High speed playing
Hey guys,
Some of you may have noticed that I've been away for a while. I've had a lot of stuff to sort out with the new work arrangements, but I have been tinkering around with my cars a bit. I tried to find my other thread on my high speed projects, but couldn't find it. I just thought I'd post here and maybe it'll spur some amusing conversation. When last I posted on the subject, my buddy and I were working on a Kyosho Inferno on road car and we wanted to see how fast we could get it to go. We removed the center diff and mounted the motor in line with the rear diff and ran it two wheel drive. We used a Neu 1512/1.5y running on a maxamps 5S 5Ah pack. The fastest recorded speed that we got out of that was 93 mph running the GRP Rally tires. Those tires are great for going fast. Well, all of that was fun for all of the two minutes it took to get the car to do the 93 mph, but then got boring quickly, since the car was just about good for nothing else. Now we are putting our sights on parking lot drag racing. Last weekend, I went out and ran my Sportwerks Turmoil with a lowly Mamba Max controller on 4S powering a Feigao 8L geared 44/18 and spanked everybody. We're going to try something new for next weekend. We have an Xray XT8 and Neu 1515/1.5d coming in tomorrow. We're going to throw that together with a Compro and a Neu 5S 4.1Ah 30C lipo pack and see what it does. Does anyone have any experience with the 1515/1.5d? |
I have zero experience with the high end stuff. But 2 weeks ago, some guy at the San Antonio dragrace used a mamba setup (5700kv) and 5s. He did 100mph in 1.33 seconds. You could spray the parklot with cheap soda like we do here. It makes a nice sticky surface.
|
I have two gallons of VHT coming. I'm really hoping that it helps with the traction.

AAngel where are you guys racing?

CRAZY! Makes my feet stick like heck to my local out door track That will be fun:intello: |

They do 0-100 in 0.9s IIRC. We need some vids! |
Think about it 100 miles an hour in a 1:10 (I am assuming that is..?) is equivalent to :gasp: in a 1:1.:intello:
|
We are racing on Saturday nights in the parking lot of the Target on Manhattan Blvd. Lots of guys show up. I usually get there around 9:00 pm. Just ask around for the other guy that runs electrics.

Nice video... that's fast.. :)

really nice video.
i had to watch those last few seconds a few times - that power is just brutal! |
crazy power:weight, and super duper traction.... it's so nice..

Take a vid if you can. |
Do monster trucks ever compete in those drag races?
|
There is this guy that races his extended Tmaxx, there is another with an E-Stampede and I just goof around with my overpowered rustler.
|
There are monster trucks drag racing, but they don't look anything monster trucks. They are all slammed.
I got my Neu 1515/1.5d in yesterday. I wired it up in my 8ight T on 5S and it was just insane. It wheelied too much. Since I'm running GRP Park tires, I'm getting really good traction, so I decided to go rear wheel drive to see how much it would cut down on the wheelies. Well, it worked well on the wheelies, but I smoked another Quark controller too. It really smoked. I ordered a Compro 22418 this morning and got expedited shipping. Hopefully the Compro can handle the 2700kv 1515 motor. The really funny thing is that in all of the running that I did, my cheapie truerc 8Ah 5S pack never got to be over 100*F. I'm really starting to question whether the Quarks are up to the task of being run hard in a large scale truck. |
Well, the S&T site does say the Quark ESCs are meant for 1/10 scale. I use the 125 in a buggy with a 2600kv motor on 4s and have had no problems so far. Maybe it was just a lemon? I consider the 125B a slightly beefier version of a MM...

I'm not saying that they (Quarks) don't run well, because they do. This just happens to be the third or fourth time than I've blown one up.
In anycase, I was able to get a clocked speed of 55mph out of the motor, but the truck was absolutely uncontrollable and I wasn't anywhere near full throttle. I think that the Compro will handle the torturous duty of drag racing better. I'm really hoping that the 22418 will be the ticket. I'll try to remember to take a video camera with me this weekend. I keep forgetting it. I would love to have had some footage of the Kyosho doing 93 mph. |
I might have to show up one day. Its not but about a few hours from Baton Rouge...

The next meet is this Sunday at around 9am. If you are interested, I can email you the "flyer". |

That 93 MPH sounds killer. I wanted too try a Compro myself for dragracing. But everytime I have the money for it, I've to spend it on something else. All I have is 3 additional caps on my mamba ESC. It helps a bit, but I need more voltage and current capability. |
Well, my Compro 22418 should be here today. I'm going to knock off of work early today to setup my truck for tomorrow night. My setup is going to be my 8T with the Neu 1515/1.5d with a Neu 5S 4.1Ah 30C pack. I'm thinking that a 15/48 gearing should be good for 132'.
I really have to say that this semi organized informal parking lot drag racing has been lots of fun. I've also found that there is a lot more to just going straight than I thought there was. On thing that I'm going to try today is two wheel drive. I think that the tires that I have are going to hook up pretty good. I'd like to be able to get rid of the 4 wheel drive because it really adds to the truck's wanting to wheelie. If anyone has any advise on this, I'd appreciate it. |
Are you going to make it front wheel drive when you do this? If it wheelies easily with 4wd, removing the front drive components will only make the front lighter and wheelie easier...
