Mugen MBX5T Conversion - Suggestions/advice
New Project...
http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/Mugen/ I was thinking to go for 4s and mm/ubec (just easy to use & I don't fancy the quark mod :sarcastic:) I'm hoping Mike will come through with a motor mount for me else I'm going to try to see what I can come up with at home... :gasp: Worst worst case i know there is this kit out there which looks pretty but means changing the diff to a Kyosho - all told that will cost over $200 which I'd rather put to motor and lipos - The esc mount looks sweet though so if mike's watching - I'd but one from you! http://www.rcproductdesigns.com/EMBX5_index.htm Any suggestions on motor / gearing - I'd like to get 40mph out of it - I'm in the debate of cheap (Feigao 8XL) or jumping in with the Neu - Would I need the 1515 or the 1512... Apreciate all thoughts and input on the conversion - there don't appear to be too many out there... Thanks! |
Hey Arct1k, we are working on the mugen mount. Should be in the store soon.
The plan is to bang out some mounts on the weekend. As for motor, I'd say play it save and and go for a Wanderer/Feigao first. For 4S I'd suggest a 9XL to match your MM. 40mph is alot of speed, we usually aim for 33-35mph. That was what you saw at the Barn in Mikes 8T. (He used a 1950 though, and let me use his 9XL for my Buggy) Hope that helps Daf |
With some mild fab skills you can make a motor mount. If you are not inclined there, you could send chassis to Mike for making of a mount, as others have done. This would also help future conversions for others as they could buy the mount in the store.
As far as powering it, if you run the MM and go for cheap motor, you may want a 9XL, and just gear for 40mph. If you want to run a Nue, I would suggest a different controller, as many have had issues with the MM/Neu combo. |
Dreams answered! GO RC-MONSTER! It will be a week before the roller gets to me - the joys of trading - so hopefully the mount will be in then! I'm happy to bring up the roller when i get it if you need something to try it with.
I have a MM and 9XL in my e-revo so I can swap it over to try and then decide! Just have to sort out my lipo situation... I have 20C maxamps 3s 8400, 2s 5000 and 3s 5000 currently - I think I'll be forced to get a pair of 25 or 30c 5000 2s packs! If 30-35 was how Mike was driving I might want 20-25! ;) Dafni - you might also want to have a look at that ESC mount - Looks sweet with the fan mount built in - I think that would sell pretty well. |

So does the fan mount underneath, and the ESC mount on top. Would the fan be sucking or blowing air? Since if the ESC would be on top then the fan would be facing the bottom of the ESC. Also, if the ESC was mounted by double sided tape or Velcro, then the fan wouldn't do anything. Can you explaion to me how the components would mount?
Thanks. |
Don't laugh! This is the only picture I could find.
http://www.rcproductdesigns.com/imag...ery/EL8005.jpg Nice idea but I would have thought you'd mount the fun underneath blowing up into the ESC HS. Would work with a quark or mgm - Not with the MM as the cap are too high to invert. Not my design! :) |

It gives you the option of running a fan underneath. You have to take the plastic case off the MM and drill holes in the bottom and the sides - reassemble and mount it on the plate. You then put the fan on the bottom blowing in to cool the fets on the bottom side. I robbed the pic from another site, but you can kind of see the fan on the bottom.

what else is needed to complete this? I was considering doing my buggy but I may comsider my 5T instead....anybody have a parts list?
|
Parts Required

Well....I emailed RCMike a couple weeks ago...gave him plentry of time to respond but no answer....Oh well.
|
Still WIP I believe - Hoping v soon
|
The mugen mount has been on the list for a bit - it will happen this week for sure, though. Sorry for the delays - if only there was more time in a day!
|
Mike - NP let me know when I can place the order - I'll take it hot off the CNC!
|
Roger that - if things go as planned, Thursday or Friday will be the day I prototype the 1st Mugen mount. They should be good to go and listed by Monday on the site. :)
|
Yay! The new mount you have up looks nice - Will the mugen be the same with an servo & esc/rx mount?
|
So So close!!!
|
Can't wait to see it!

Ultimately, the mount kit will include a servo tray for sure - the rx mount portion depends on how it all fits. :)
The mount will utilize the stock diff m_podt. |
But with the Mugen diff you can't use the Kyosho plastic spur. Or isn't that the hot setup anymore?
|
you can use a msr spur gear adaptor and a ofna 51 t spur.
|
You could implant the entire Hot Bodies LSP center Diff setup(spur and center bulks with the LSP mount) if you wanted, but then you wouldn't need a Mugen mount at all.
The idea is to make a motor mount for the Mugen itself - using the entire Mugen diff and front center bulkkhead with one of our hardened pinions. No need to buy anything else - just the motor mount and hardened pinion. The whole Hot Bodies diff and plastic spur setup is a "work around" when not using a hardened pinion. The Mugen mount will allow you to use all the Mugen parts instead of transplanting parts from other vehicles. Same idea as all the rest of our mounts. :) |
Thanks to my MBX-5R, I guess..;p
|
Mike - Looking good for today - my F5 key is wearing out and your site sits will be doing very well!
Cheers |
Purchased! Another 150 at RCM!

Caution on new mugen mount - A few issues with the mount at the moment on my MBX5T....
1) The lower mount screw holes weren't long enough - Easily enough to recitify with cutting down the screws 2) The holes that the servo mount slots into weren't quite big enough - Easy fixe by enlarging the holes by running a 4.5mm drill bit in for a minute 3) The motor mount adjustment isn't wide enough - The truggy has a 62t spur - I can't get any pinion on... The mount need to be much wider. - Stumped! I've attached some pics below: http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/104.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/103.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/102.jpg http://i168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/101.jpg Cheers |

You want the plastic spur anyway.. steelies are loud and chew up a nice pinion.
You might need a non-mugn diff case though. Not sure what's the latest there... but I dont' think the kyosho spur fits a mugen diff. |

YAY! I have the old 46T Spur in the box so I'll just rebuild the diff and drop to a 12T pinon - Watch this space!
|
I think even hardened pinions will get chewed... depending on the horsepower and type of abuse dished out, they may last a long time. But they will wear... even the hardened clutch bells wear out in a nitro car. My 8ightT has worn the bell pretty bad in only a handful of race weekends this summer. It's usable still, but not looking good. If mikes' new hardened gears last as long as a clutchbell (a whole season) with a stock steel spur, then that's not bad.
If I had a Mugen I might do that. In fact, there is a new car that I really want to convert and I'm assuming it has Mugen style diffs. If it does, I will probably try the new hardened gears on it so I can just run the stock spur. Running a plastic spur eliminates this almost entirely though. A cheap steel pinion will last a very long time and a hardened might last a lifetime. And the kysoho spur lasts a long time too, esp considering it's $5 |
When Chris (Arct1c) first told me about the Mugen mount, I was a little embarassed and confused that it didn't work(thought I had just become an honorary member of the Jacka$$ club), but then I looked at the pictures he sent - looked like a long buggy with a big spur gear. I am glad we figured it out, though - I thought I was gonna have to redesign the mount (I was pretty happy with the design and how they came out).
I made the mount to accomodate my range of hardened pinions (should accomodate a range of about 12-14 pinion options on the stock 46 tooth spur). And for the record, Dustin - my gears are harder than the average hardened steel clutch bell. Most standard clutch bells use low carbon steel and case harden it - I do this for the emaxx idler gears, which last a very long time. The new hardened pinions have a higher carbon steel and are through hardened - I would be shocked it they didn't last a few seasons to be honest. The hard case on your average clutch is perhaps .015" - .02" thick. Once this is gone, the wear accelerates quickly, and the deeper into this material you go, the "softer" it is. My new hardened pinion gears are hard all the way through - the wear won't accelerate in time, so they may outlast the spur gear in all reality - especially the larger ones. |
Cool... I know there are different grades... just like the stuff that RRP makes, their "extra hard" high carbon gears.
That's what I was going to have made before the shop drove me insane and I gave up on them. I couldn't take it anymore, lol... Glad you got them Mike. |
All fixed! Focussed on completing the X1CR ande getting that out on a test run - Pics will be up shortly on the buggy forum.
Once I rebuilt the diff with the 46T it all went together fine - I eliminated the spacers too so everything that bit lower. I have a 12T in at the moment but quest for speed my put me back to 16T. Pics shortly... |
Here are the completed pics - Once I got past the user error on the 62T pinion smooth as silk!
Thanks Mike! http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u180/Arct1k/Mugen/ |
