Rustler Dogbones (56k warning)
To anyone who has ever snapped a CVD drive pin, you may want to try this if you haven't already.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...d/DSC00038.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...DSC00039-1.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...d/DSC00040.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...d/DSC00041.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...DSC00042-1.jpg http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...d/DSC00043.jpg Now I just need to find some 80mm (preferably 78mm) dogbones that will fit the drive cups. More pictures to come if I do. Bear in mind that suspension travel will be limited to ~1" above/below the transmission drive cup to prevent binding/losing the dogbone. This is fine for me since I run on-road and don't need tons of travel. |
|
Wow, good thinking. Wish I would have thought of this years ago, before I spent $40 (if not more) on CVD's.
|
What brand/application drive cups did you use?
|
Believe it or not, they're the MIP CVD drive cups. I had 2 sets because I ordered another set of CVDs when my old set wore out. 1 pair stays on the transmission outputs, the other gets attached to the modified stub axles.
|
I can't take credit for this dogbone setup because it has been around for awhile.
HPI A549 Axle http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?FVSEARCH=a549 HPI 72072 Dog Bone (order 2) http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...FVSEARCH=72072 HPI 72108 Drive Cup (order 2) http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...FVSEARCH=72108 This works pretty good, way better than MIP CVD's. You can use O rings or better yet a couple of millimeters of fuel tubing to center the dogbones. Just put it in the drive cups on each side. |
That looks nice too. I looked at those dogbones but 83mm is too long to use with the MIP drive cups, which are longer that the HPI's and would cause excessive binding.
|
I will give the HPI stuff a try in my next pede, looks alot cheaper than the MIP, and will retain the metric wheel nuts so that I can use my trusty tamiya wheel wrench!
|
*GASP* You mean- THIS??!!??
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g4...DSC00049-1.jpg    I would have used the HPI stuff, too, but I already had the MIP cups and all I needed were the dogbones. |
I must have 20 of those, very useful to me!
|
You should put a few on eBay.
***VINTAGE*** |
I even have a kyosho made wrench, slightly different to the tamiya.
I guess that I am a collector now, I have 2 different kinds!! |
Just FYI- I couldn't use those Ofna dogbones that I bought. They were both too short and too small in diameter at the ends. I'm gonna get a set of the HPI dogbones and see how they fit. Worst case scenario, I'll buy the whole HPI setup.
|
Here is another version I found. It may be a little better than my version. http://www.ultimaterc.com/forums/sho...ht=HPI+dogbone These are 86mm dogbones and have 7mm ends.
|
I've put the CVD's back in for now. I guess I'm gonna wait until I shatter another pair before I upgrade to dogbones.
I've heard also that Revo driveshafts will fit the Rustler??? |
Something I was wondering - Will this work for the pede as well? As i've had a stadium truck and want something more off-road as my T4 doesn't cope as well as i would have liked.
|
Yes, it should. The Rustler/Stampede use the same axles, arms, and transmission case. In case you didn't read the whole thread, I'll let you know the Ofna dogbones don't fit. You'll need the HPI dogbones or like-sized versions.

My other link didn't work, so here is the other version.

I used Ofna diff cups and Durtrax raze dogbones. they have been in the rusty with a Feigao 7L for over 1.5 years with no failures at all. Here is a write up I did back then:
http://www.rcbros.com/forum/forum_po...?TID=2003&PN=1 soon after that, FLM came out with a Kit. I am surprized Mike does not sell them: http://www.rcbros.com/cart/Scripts/p...idCategory=140 |
Thanks guys, your a big help.
|
I can't seem to figure out what the difference is between the 2 different kits at rc bros. does anybody know?
