Feigao 9XL Failure
My 9XL failed on me today after only a couple of months - The one of the core magnets cracked :bad:
Anyone had this before - I was running 4s - so only 30k. :surprised: http://s168.photobucket.com/albums/u...t=DSC_5349.jpg Sadly it toasted my esc on its way out.... Time for :drunk:! Is there a waranty programme for them? Thanks |
Seems like maybe Feigao's quality is decreasing, at least on magnets. I had a 12XL that did this a couple months ago (but to the rear-most magnet). However, I was pushing 33v through that motor, and it was overgeared :). Max RPM was about 40,000.

Wouldn't this kind of damage be from impact, and have nothing to do with the voltage/load? I don't think a magnet can bust in half just from spinning itself.
Kinda like the LRP motors that suffer from the magnet coming loose from the shaft.. happens even on a 13.5 motor and I don't think there is even close to enough power for it to happen from sheer horsepower. I think it just happens from impact/shock load. But who knows... that's just what seems logical to me. I had an 8L go bad.. burnt windings. Then I ran the rotor from it in a Hacker C50 and that worked pretty good (very fast) but ran hot, and eventually got too hot and killed the magnet. |
I can't see impacts wrecking a rotor... otherwise alot more than your motor will be hurting; it would have to be a incredible forces to accomplish this. IMO
They are just crappy magnets. |
I don't think the quality is very consistant regarding Feigao motors. I have one 8XL that I have been running in my brushless 1/8 scale buggy for over 60 hours total run time with no issues. I had another one come part in less than 30 minutes. Feigao motors are great for getting you into brushless on a budget but you bascially get what you pay for.

Vandal....
There do seem to be alot more issues with the feigao type motors these days, that or mor people are using them so we here of these failures more often. Im wondering if the KB motors have segmented magnets like that- if they dont they might be a good alternative? |
Yeah, I wonder if they do? They seem to cost more when you add a rotor that is segmented though, and the KB's are pretty darn cheap! Who know? anyone?

I agree I thought it was centripetal force that did it - That is way the motors have a voltage / RPM limit...
Feigao are actually responded pretty quickly to email and are looking into a replacement... fingers crossed... |
Maybe it's just crappy materials going around. I had a motor failure this weekend too. The shaft on my Neu 1512/1.5y slid right out of the motor.

that's not good! Contact Neu, they should probably help you out right away! |
Only AAngel could kill a Neu... (I jest of-course).

GD: LOL
It never occured to me..... again you succeed in breaking something that should not break AAngel! I just don't know about you man. Your kind of luck, this is far beyond 'odds', this is far beyond 'chances'.... you do know what this DOES mean, don't you? You have been cursed! |
I swear if I'd try to break my P-Berg by mere bashing, all my battery packs would die before, including the lipos (I mean dying as cycle limit reached)
|
I know, I know. I can kill anything. I think I'm going to get another 1512/1.5y though. It's a beast of a little motor.
|
Yeah, my 1512 motor flies on only 7 A123 cells, imagine what it could do with 6s lipo's like flightpowers, they really come alive when you feed them the voltage, and don't break a sweet! This makes me want to buy some flightpowers, AAngel, do you know of a 6s lipo pack roughly 3000-4000mah range that would only droop to 3.6 volts under ~70-80 amps? The more I run my 7s pack, the more I feel the voltage dropping way too much... making it hard to get 'consistent' driving feel, and a lot less power potentially than a good lipo pack.
|
I had the motor shaft break loose on a Neu 1512/2.5d once as well. It happened the first time I ran the thing. Neu was really fast about getting a replacement back to me. They had me send it in to Diversty Model Aircraft and they had a repaired/replaced one back to me in a few days. I never did find out if they replaced it or fixed it:neutral:, but either way... it was all good. No problems since.
Even the best comapnies can make a dud on occation. But AAngel does seemsto be a Dud Magnet. Or just the guy who pushes stuff the hardest and finds the most weak points. |
jhautz, they must love you over there. I've never gotten anything back from them in less than two weeks, plus shipping time. I sent them a motor two weeks ago, just to be checked out and haven't gotten it back yet.
|
Just for info Feigao are helping me out with a replacement - Customer service lives outside of RCM!
|
AAggel, Maybe they are just sick of you "breaking" stuff and sending it in just to be checked.
Lots of busy work for them. If they just sent it back to you to quickly and told you there was nothing wrong, you wouldnt believe they did anything.:mdr: |

jhautz, this is only the second motor that I've sent back to them.
|
I know... just messin around. :whip: :mdr:
I probaby just got lucky when I sent mine in. |
Hey, I sent my 1512 in like three weeks ago. I did call them last week just to check the status. They said they are behind right now... backed up, but didn't say exactly how long it would be.
I got the feeling that it might be 3-4 weeks for me. So I'm hoping to have some news this week sometime. |
The last motor that I sent in was just for a check up. Oh well, it'll get here when it gets here. I'm just comtemplating a Neu/new motor for my Monster GT. Flip flopping between the 1515 2.5d and 1.5Y for a 5S setup.
|
I'd mark the broken motor with some sort of unique scratch or something before sending them for a repair so you can see if they repair or just replace the motor.

Oh really? Cool, I wonder what it will be like on 6s Flightpowers? (Enerland)
You are probably getting the same performance as I am on 7s A123 pack. |
On a track, I've found 4S to be more than adequate when running a motor of around 1700kv. I only run more voltage when I'm bashing.
|
You have a 1515 size though, more torque man. You would prob need 5s lipo to bring it to the track with a 1512/3D.
I don't know if I am imagining things, but it seems to me that the Neu's have a more' precise' feel so to speak. Like they react very proportionally to throttle commands, much more so than Feigao's, at least compared to my 7XL. Anyone else find this? |
That's the outcome of the quality difference :)

I just Had my 9XL Replaced and Ran it twice on 5s 5000mah 25c in an Inferno Gt with 777 Center diff MMM v2 esc 48tooth Spur and 17 tooth Pinion and it failed I was told after it failed that this is too much for these Motors and it failed becasue I used it beyond it limits if I do the math it was somewhere around 34000 to 38000 rpm I do not think this is too much for this but maybe it is please if anyone has any insight on this let me know
Specs IGT, 48 spur, 17 Pinion, MMM v2 latest Program, 1 2s 5000 25c, 1 3s 5000 25c is series, 12 Gauge wire, Deans Connectors, Spectrum DX3R As Far as Runs They were Street Runs a couple of Full Throttle Launchs but mostly roll on to keep the car straight to near full speed Motor Had the RC Monster Heat Sink on it also Body windows were cut for air flow Batteries, Wires and ESC all Cool only thing that got hot was the Motor Ran a couple days ago was probably 40 degrees Ran yesterday was probably 55 degress when it failed I was Happy with the power it had any suggestions on new Motors Like the Medusa and CC and Neu but want to stay at about same power anymore would be undriveable |
The feigao motor is cheap for a reason.....
|
I don't think it was too much rpm. Its a bit on the high side for a cheap motor, but cert not more than others have done. Plenty of people have ran 7xls on 4S (about same) and I had a 8XL on 5s for quite a while. More likely bad luck, some user error, or driveline shock or something. Hard to really guess from your post.
I would replace it with a better motor tho, like a Medusa or CC neu or something. They are not that much more $$ and very very much worth it. |
I did 6s life (thats about 5s lipo) with 9xl feigao. Added couple fans and didn't have any issues.. Even geared it to the moon for couple speedruns, took it very well. But other hand, im not a hardcore racer so can't say from that point of view..
