Need help makeing my mind up on Tires

Hello again. I ordered some stuff for my e-maxx but I think tires are next on the list for the upgrade.

I will be kinda race bashing in a very rough track. I will be run 9xl on 6s A123 cells and using the FLM ext chassis. I need something to help with stability. I can not make up my mind on Proline 40 series or offset wheels. It is a shame you can not get both and be really wide.

Does the extra mass of the 40 series have a big impact on power?
Or
Should I be thinking the 40 series gives better grip.

I have gone back and forth a couple of time. about the only think I have desided is I hate tire glue and want to have beadlocks.... Oh since this is bashing run time is important also...

on a rough track i would avoid 40 series.
the 40 series have less side-flex than normal sized wheels; the truck becomes unpredictable

For bashing i wouldn't use 40 series either. the sidewall is skinny, so on jumps etc. the truck takes a beating. I personally like a wide standing truck, so almost all my wheels have offset.

perhaps the proline baldlands are the tires that suit your needs. they come with molded foams, which are much better in terms of quality than normal foams. normal foams tend to get (too) soft after a while. molded foams are known to outlast a tire. a 23mm version of rim would be a wise investment too. (but you need additional 23 mm wheel adapters.)

highflier 10.20.2007 02:46 PM

The badlands looked small in width. Did not get excited about it.. how about this setup.

By the way this is the tire I got right now

I think I will put this body on it http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...0&I=LXPCG6&P=K

I could not find any wider badlands or ones that came with molded foams, os If I missed something don't worry calling me a dumb sh&^ c cause when it comes to this e-maxx MT build up I am!!!

I have the badlands, and I must say they have some good pickup. I also have some RD Logic spikes mounted on their rims, and those are another level better than the badlands, especially on grass. They have a great hard pack dirt feel, like a lot of grip, but also drifting is very easy and fun with them. But if you say it is a very rough track, then the Badlands might do better in that.

highflier 10.20.2007 05:07 PM

maybe I am loooking at the wrong badlands.... The width was ~2.3" vs the 3" on the mulchers That would mean almost 1 1/2 inches more in width for stability. Am I missing somehting here?

all I do is bash and I use the standard mt size badlands. Hands down the best bash tire I have ever used. The only thing they are lacking in is traction on the asphalt.

zeropointbug 10.20.2007 05:23 PM

They will be generally the same width as other MT tires, you might be looking at the 1/8 buggy version?

Yeah, I find that too... they are hard to control on asphalt, like they have no stability and makes the truck feel very 'sloppy'.

sapper_triple6 10.20.2007 05:27 PM

I have also heard really good reviews on the Losi Zombiemaxx tires.

zeropointbug 10.20.2007 08:12 PM

Zombie maxx tires balloon too easy, and they wear too fast. They look like they are a heavier tire as well; I here they are more suited to rock crawlers than racers.

squeeforever 10.20.2007 09:54 PM

I don't think you can go wrong with the Badlands. The MT tires are a better design and handle much better than the standard Maxx size tires. I would recommend the Badlands, Maximizer rims, and Ofna 17mm adapters.

BP-Revo 10.20.2007 10:01 PM

From what I hear badlands are a heck of an all around tire, just not really good for street or hard packed stuff...

I plan to pick some up for myself when I can.

zeropointbug 10.20.2007 10:18 PM

Yes, they are great, but just remember, they are not a high speed stability tire, after 40mph, they tend to balloon at that point, although not near as bad as some tires, such as the Mashers for instance.

The absolute best tire/foam combos that I've run have been the GRP. Find a set that meets your needs and get them. You won't be disappointed.

i have the beadlocks, a little heavy but should be worth the extra money when its time for new treads

Do find their rubber is a little soft? I ran a set on a 7700kv T3 basher on a lot of concrete and they seemed to wear quick. Maybe it was just me. I do like that you can get them preassembled.

zeropointbug 10.21.2007 02:44 PM

AAngel, do you have a link to those GRP tires? I have heard good things about those as well.

squeeforever 10.21.2007 02:44 PM

I actually like the new Cheyenne beadlocks Proline just came out with better than the Maximizers.

highflier 10.21.2007 03:12 PM

Entjoles,
Thanks for the link, it was way cheaper there then at tower.

I just ordered the
MT badlands
Ofna adapters
Maximkizer beadlock 1/2 offset in black

Still need a nice running body and I guess shocks will be next :) After that I think I am OK until I Break something. I imagine that will be Diffs, dogbones ect...

Zero here it is:

With the Maximizers and badlands. How do people vent the tires. I have been told to put holes in the tires but wouldn't this increase the risk of the tires tearing

zeropointbug 10.21.2007 11:46 PM

Cool, thanks mkrusedc, those 'Grip' truggy tires that GRP has look good, kinda like the bowtie. Have you tried the Bowtie as well AAngel, or anyone else, can you compare?

zeropointbug 10.22.2007 12:02 AM

Kinda off topic, but has anyone tried the Vantage Racing carbon fiber 3.3 chassis? It look like it would shave a lot of weight off the truck, and looks gorgeous! Price is very decent as well!

EDIT: Another thing is the servo mounts are moved forward, like they should have been in the first place, which opens up ALOT of room for mounting stuff.

Not if done properly. If you simply take a leather punch and punch the holes then theres no way for it to rip.

MTBikerTim 10.22.2007 02:29 AM

Thanks squee. I tried punching bud didn't have much success so I just cut holes. I didn't like the tires so it didn't matter much. First run I tore a big hole in my tire. Funny thing way it had nothing to do with me cutting holes in the tire it was just bad luck. I'm still using those tires and they haven't torn from the holes I cut but I haven't been running them for that long. It's something that you have to consider though when buying maximizers that you have to punch hole in your tires.

rc10mike 10.22.2007 05:19 AM

+1 on the Losi Zombiemaxx

Had them on my Big Block Revo for a while. Hooked up great on every surface including the track.

Another great tire is the standard Maxx sized bowties. I raced and bashed with these tires on concrete for about 4 gallons and still have yet to wear the pins off!

highflier 10.22.2007 11:37 AM

I might also get a set of the bowtie's for hard pack dirt.

Tim, I guess I will have to punch holes in the tires as I ordered the maximizers. I am not sure why you had a hard time. If you do not have a hole punch just drive a small nail in.

Don't know if you folks have seen this one before (I know I hadn't) but it's a pretty handy chart.

Sorry if it's old news.

highflier 10.23.2007 02:14 PM

All,
Sorry for the duplicate post in a second thread. But I am impatient and want to get my project going.

As I get ready to do the build. (The chassis is here FLM ext.) I starting thinking should I get SS hinge pins and SS screw set or is that just a un needed expense

Comments?

Any other small items I should just get from the begining. For know a lot of the plastic will be RPM.

Highflier

PS.
As a reminder he is what I got so far
Stock e-maxx
12020 esc
9xl motor
FLM ext chassis
RPM plastic, Arms,bumper, bulkheads
RcM heatsink
idler gear
Hitec 645MG steering servo
Badlands and beadless rims and ofna hub adapters
3amp Bec (is that enough?) dimisions engineering
6s1p pack of A123 More cells on the way.

Future items
Shock towers
shocks

zeropointbug 10.23.2007 02:47 PM

Looks pretty good, should perform very well. Are you going to be running 6s2p pack? That might be a awesome fast setup on that amount of cells.

highflier 10.23.2007 07:32 PM

Are you saying that I should get the upgraded hingpins and screws?

I think I will try both 6s1p and 6s2p.

Highflier

zeropointbug 10.23.2007 11:19 PM

6s1p is going to suffer on a 9XL, that motor can draw over 100 amps I believe, 6 cells is only 1080 watts (180 solid watts each), so you will almost certainly want to use a 6s2p pack for over 2000 watts capable, and your punch will be increased drastically.

highflier 10.30.2007 08:44 PM

Quick question...

My wheels/ rims/ and adapters have shown up from Impakrc. The wheels come with a set of rings. It does not look like I need them but Thought I would double check before I assemble them.

Badlands
Maximizer beadless

So do I use the rings with this combo?
