LSP convertion....
Hey dudes my names Nick I'm new to RC monster....
I normally hang out at E-savage.com as i run a nice e-sav powered by a novak 4.5 and 14 cells... I'm getting parts together to perform a BL conversion on a HB lightning pro-R... So far i have a fiegao 9xl, quark 125b, UBEC, and RC monster heat sinks for both motor and ESC... The truck will be arriving soon and i also have an RC monster motor mount on its way.... With the RC monster motor mount placing the motor where it does i do not think i will have room to squeeze 14 cells in the chassis... So i may have to go to LIPO...I have scoured the forum and found that there are many different configurations that people use... I'm just after some input on what type of LIPO would suit my application best.. I was thinking of going for 4s maybe 5s...i have heard that 6s is way scetchy with the 125b so i wont go there....i will try a 12t pinion first as my backyard "motocross" style track is very tight but big enough for 1:8:yes: Thanks dudes... |
First off, welcome to RC-M!
I think for you setup, 5S would be perfect. My choice would be a TrueRC pack. I would go with a 5S2P 8000mah pack. |
:yipi:Welcome to the forums! You sound like you got it all together. You should definitely try to squeeze your cells in there first, no reason to drop more money just yet. But if you do decide to go lipo I suggest you take a look at TrueRC's (great bang for the buck) 8000 packs for runtime and their 6400 packs for a lighter setup. They're about half the price of other lipo's and so far I have yet to hear anything bad about them, so long as you don't draw too many amps(their C rating is lower than other companies). With them being so affordable you could buy 1 4S pack and 1 5S pack and give them both a try.
Also, you should look at BrianG's calculator if you haven't already, here's a link, it's really handy to have. I think a 12T pinion might be a little small for a 9XL, even with a MX style track. You might want to invest in a 13, 14, or 15T so you have some options. Good luck and keep us updated! |
Thanks guys....
I'm not going to buy any new batteries until i get the truck all put together and see how much room i have to work with.... I did check out that speed calculator and it a very cool tool...... It says my motor speed will be 36318.8 RPM....and top speed will be 34.98 MPH (56.19km/h).....i think i used it right? I just automatically gear low for my track as it has a history of letting the smoke out of ESC's and several motors! Thanks heaps for the warm welcome and use full input! |
Here, perhaps this is helpfull to you;
It might give you an idea where to put the cells and the motor. http://picasaweb.google.com/buikpijn...ningconversion |

I checked that out in another thread....is that yours she's a beauty! I was hoping to just use the RC M motor mount but it is not going to let mount the cells like that...that is awesome! I'm really looking forward to the build some of these trucks look great! |
While waiting for my chassis to arrive...I have been looking at the prices and specs of lipo chargers out of interest....
If you have to charge a lipo at 1c or just below.....does that mean to charge a 5000mah lipo you must have a charger that is capable of 5 amps? Or can you succesfully charge at like .5c or somthing? I ask all this as there are some nice chargers that have a max rate of 4 and 5amp....would that be any good for charging higher capacity lipo's like 6000mah or 8000mah for example?? What are some popular chargers that wont deprive me of to much beer money:mdr: |
You can charge at less than 1c, but it will just take longer.
|
For a charger, I would look into the Hyperions or the E-Stations.
|
This may be a good charger for you:
http://www.maxamps.com/EOS0610i.htm It has a built in balancer and is capable of 10 amps. |
im not sure how your cells are layed out.. 7 sxs? or a 6cell stick with one on top?
my trucks got two 5s1p 5000mah True-RC packs wired in parallel. http://www.rc-monster.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6529 the packs are 34mm x 50mm x 160mm, and just barely fit. if your packs are smaller than that, you shouldn't have any problem w/ a similar layout. |
Cool thanks guys...
So it sounds like you need a charger around the 8-10 amp region to be able to charge high capacity lipo's in a decent time.... A4DTM.....my current packs are 7 cell side x side packs and require quite a bit of real estate to mount... I'm seriously considering lipo's for this conversion mainly to save room on the chassis and to keep the weight down... |
Well the chassis arrived today:yipi:
It looks nicer than i expected:smile: So all I'm waiting for now is the motor mount and pinion.....then i can start building this baby... I'll post some pic's as soon as i start the build....but right now its just a rolling chassis as it came out of the box....and im sure every one has seen one of those before:lol: PS: Is Mike on holidays or something?......he has not responded to my mails.... Oh well patience is a virtue!.... |
Where did you send the e-mails?

The Build Begins!
I got some time to start the project off....
So far i have removed all the nitro related stuff......and modified the servo tray and fitted a steering servo.... http://img520.imageshack.us/img520/7686/imgp0142dy2.jpg And this photo just shows empty chassis awaiting electronics... http://img519.imageshack.us/img519/3810/imgp0147eg5.jpg More photos real soon! |
CANT WAIT FOR MORE PHOTOS
sorry for caps lol |
Well I have done some more work...
After i took the last pics there was not much more work thats required.. Pretty straight forward conversion...but i still have tidy it up a bit as there is wire everywhere! I still need to secure the battery mount..but when my lipo's arrive it pretty much ready to drive! I had a short test drive on 12 NiMh cells and everything worked fine.... This first pic shows how i mounted the ESC and heatsink with fans to the center chassis brace.. http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/3775/imgp0157yu0.jpg And these pics give you an idea of the layout of the chassis.. http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/3208/imgp0158tz2.jpg http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5439/imgp0160du1.jpg Looking forward to taking it to the track! |
Any suggestions?
Does any one see anything that could be changed/improved?
I would love to here some suggestions as i have never owned a 1/8th scale before! |
Aside from various hopups you will definately want if your gonna race, it looks good!
|
It's looking pretty good.
Personally I wouldn't feel comfortable with my servo wire looped around the drive shaft, but it might be ok. When you put the esc to rx extension in, just be careful it can't end up in the spur gear. What batteries are you going to use? |
Quote:
Don't worry i have not been driving it like that:lol: I just mocked up the receiver and battery tray locations for the pic... I think i will open up the servo and re-solder the wires shorter.... I'm not happy with the wiring around the ESC/fans but its hard to get it neat with so much wire:mdr: I will be trying both 4s and 5s to work out what works best for me.... I have been trying to get some batt's from True RC but Dan must be busy and i have not been able to place an order.... I have also got a max amps 6000mah 5s2p pack on the way so i can get this baby running..... |
why dont you just cut the servo wires in the middle to the length you need? then solder it back together.
seems like itd be easier than opening up the servo. but idk. truck looks AWSOME btw |

Yeah you could just cut the wire and solder the connection for sure...
I just thought it may look nice and factory if i re-solder the wire at the servo end... Thanks for the comments to guys:wink: |
you could throw 1 peice of heatshrink over the 3 wires (heatsink each wire separatly of course) and it may look ok. its not like it would be hard to take it all apart and make it look clean im just saying.
|
All I can say is wow!!
Hi guys.....
Happy new year to you all:party: My Max amps 6000mah 5s2p lipo arrived just before Christmas and this afternoon I thought i would give the truck a quick run in the street.... I just happened to have a 15T pinion installed as i thought "I'll just see how quick this thing is"...... Well i gave the throttle a quick stab and the front wheels just lifted off the road with the tires ballooning like crazy the rear wing acting as a wheelie bar:surprised: That i did NOT expect as it is a truggy with a very long wheel base and a center diff after all! It is a hell of a lot faster than i ever imagined it would be:lol: Way faster than nitro and almost to fast for the track!!! |
