What is everyone elses other hobbies besides R/C? or what did you do before you got into R/C?

I raced quads, MX, XC, and i do freestyle. I skated board and i used to do some bmx dirt jumping with my buddies in highschool till they got out of it.

You can find my videos here http://www.youtube.com/Rootar

post a few pics if you guys want, it always cool to see what else everyone is interested in besides the obvious...

I ride as well. I think I'm about to sell my CR125R though. :( I also ride BMX, but haven't to much lately. Other than that, I mostly work on my truck.

Advantage!!!

Take advantage of that while you still can:tongue:. Once you get into your 30's & 40's it gets harder and harder on your body:neutral:. I used to do all of that plus waterski, boogy boarding, and race go carts, but there are so many things that get in the way as you get older. Like marriage, kids, work, and the body just cannot keep up any longer. I still love trails on the dirtbike, and carting when I can, but one can only afford so much money for the fun stuff, if you know what I mean:oh:. The wife has to be able to buy her stuff to:eyes:.

We have been spending a lot of our time and money on travel these days touring around Europe and Asia. That only leaves so much for hobbies. Still I am trying to have some fun doing my builds. I have 4 versions of the E-SuperMaxx and building them is takning up a lot of my time and money trying to acheive that bullet proof aspect and still manage 40 to 50- mph. I am waiting on some electronics right now and have more on my Xmas list, so I have to wait on Santa for those.

I also find as much time as possible doing woodwork, but living overseas makes that a little bit hard to do.

lincpimp 12.03.2007 10:55 AM

I am a hobbyist level gunsmith and enjoy collecting firearms. I like to modify my guns and target shoot. I do not hunt as I have no interest or time for it. Most of my collection is handguns, however I do have a few rifles and shotguns. Most are weapons that have seen military service, and any gun that has a different mechanical operation from the norm is interesting to me. Much like RC it is addictive and can be costly, I probably dropped 4k this weekend on my new gun safe and a ton of ammo!

I also like to do performance mods to fast cars/truck and sportbikes. And car stereo installs. I only toy with my own vehicles though. Since I own an auto body shop I have enough work to do on full size vehicles. Makes working on RC or a gun a break from the norm. I also custom paint full size cars and boats, but that is more like part of my job than my hobby!

Getting old aint no excuse Rick Raymond, the president of the TQRA (texahoma quad racing association) is 50 i think and he hauls balls, he rides with A-class riders most in their 20s allday long, hahaha he is an animal.

2FastSS4U 12.03.2007 12:36 PM

I'm into all things audio, pro, mobile, analog, digital. I've got an obsession with tube based audio equipment and high end speakers that produce lifelike sound and detail that will make your jaw drop.

Mark Fradkin 12.03.2007 01:04 PM

I am also into sterio equipment. Have Krell and B & W speaker set up I really enjoy listening to. I also have this 30 plus year passion for surfing., still going strong. I live at the beach and it is also where I mostly run my RCM inspired brushless EMAXX, set up for sand..

ClodMaxx 12.03.2007 01:22 PM

<----- another audio and videophile here. my stuff isn't top of the line, but it's pretty good - a sony 36" HDTV hooked through a wicked stereo system and xbox 360... i have a Pioneer Elite THX certified preamp/tuner, and a nasty Klipsch surround speaker system. i think it'll make my neighbor's walls shake, lol.

i'm also into guitars - i have a Larrivee limited edition (#1 of 50) acoustic guitar, and a Gibson Les Paul that i play through a Gibson Super Goldtone amp (which was discontinued a few years ago).

oh - and a totally custom Trek full suspension freeride mountain bike that i beat the tar out of in spring/summer/fall. it's currently muddy, and i need to clean it for winter storage.

i think that's it, aside from my r/c's of course!

Serum 12.03.2007 02:54 PM

audio, and this is/was huge for me(got a sweet FM acoustics 800A amplifier, a 100W pure class A tube amplifier that needs some love, that puppy uses handwinded transformers, straight till 120khzor 150khz and weights a nifty 210lbs) currently tinkering on some new speakers. my challange is to create an impressive bass/soundfield from relative small speakers. i'm going compound and measured some speakers who seem to have the right t/s parameters to suit my bass-needs. I want to use an active crossover, (using it on my car too, and i love it) got a MLSA pulse measuring device to measure the speakers, (frequency response, waterfall, determine t/s paramaters) basicly i enjoy anything which involves a tinkering/creating part, i spent a lot mountainbiking/biking, building furniture. biking takes a large amount of my usual day. Just finished a 29er salsa mamasita, build from ground up.

This is one of my latest project, the sub. it does what it should do.

By comparison I am a simple minded folk. Before RC I was mainly into drawing/doodling crazy ideas, then I got my Madbull at about 16 y/o, then after school/6th form I entered into the workforce & saved up enough money to buy my TXT-1, which became a labour of love. I also enjoy shooting airguns, but at the moment I have no-where to shoot; no clubs near by. Besides that I enjoy browsing the internet, music (eclectic tastes), Airfix kits and tinkering with stuff- mechanically minded I guess. Here are my girlfriend substitutes:

Duster_360 12.03.2007 06:40 PM

NRA Highpower rifle competition, guns in general, sportbikes and vintage Mopar restoration (when I have time). I've been forced to take a break from competition due to major career direction change (from employee to self employed). But I'm moving in the direction to get back into shooting shape and see if I can still do it. I hold 3 classifications - Master in HighPower Rifle, Master in HighPower Rifle Long Range and Expert in 3 position outdoor (rimfire). I build all my own ammo (except rimfire) and the rifles I use in competition. I'm waiting on a chambering reamer for a 6mm based rifle project now.

Have a mint '84 Yam RZ350 in red white and blue (didn't care for the yellow and black) with the rare factory rear seat pillion. Current ride is a 95 CBR600F3. Working on restoring a 71 Ply Duster and upgrading from a Slant 6 to 360 V8. New A frame, engine, trans and rear end are already built, next step is start disassembly of the car.

cart213 12.03.2007 06:46 PM

My main hobby right now is my kids.

Beyond that and r/c, I collect automotive magazines. I've got about 15~17 years worth of Road&Track, Car&Driver, and MotorTrend. It drives my wife crazy that I've got so many magazines lying around. And a few years ago, I added RC Car Action and RC Driver subcriptions to the pile.

I also enjoy my home audio/video equipment. I've got a 50" Samsung 1080p DLP television, an Onkyo 604 receiver, a Hsu STF-2 sub, and Hsu Ventriloquist speakers. I wanted bigger speakers, of course, but my wife vetoed me.

I love the name of the sub. Reminds me of STFU!!!! :mdr:

Lets see, besides rc...
- snowboarding = many, many times each winter and a lot of money into trips and gear
- mountain biking = mostly dirt jumping, freeride, and downhill, and I just started racing downhill this year
- cars = I prefer offroading, but fast cars are great too, as long as those fast cars are practical, they're fine with me
- Guns = I enjoy going to the gun range every once in a while to shoot, almost always pistols

BL_RV0 12.03.2007 11:31 PM

downhill mountainbiking, bmx jumping, and riding my 250 :)

skellyo 12.03.2007 11:52 PM

My daughter takes up a lot of my time...hence the sale of a lot of my RC vehicles. Aside from her, I'm into home theater:

Family Room:
Samsung 56" DLP - 4yr old 720p model
B&K AVR507 Receiver
Mirage OM7's, OMC2 and Omni 60 speakers
2 x Velodyne DLS-3750 subs
PS3
Wii
HD-DVR
Home Theater Master MX-700 Remote

Bedroom:
Panasonic 42" 720P Plasma
Sony DVD Dream System HTIB
HD-DVR
Logitech Harmony 880 Remote

Bonus Room:
Sony 32" XBR Wega HDTV
Yamaha RX-V1400
Monitor Audio Silver S1 Front/Rear, Silver LCR Center
Phase Technology Power 12 sub

The 32" Wega goes away before the end of the year, the DLP will move up to the bonus room and a Sony 60" SXRD will replace the Samsung DLP in the family room. The Velodyne DLS-3750's are also replacing the Phase Technology Power 12 or being sold in lieu of my new sub I just ordered:
SVS PB13-Ultra

The latest hobby is my 8 month old son. :yipi: He is a blast and getting better every day.

Then there is RC of course. I also build and ride mountain bikes. Full suspension and hard tails. Then there is guns. WOW. were to start??? Rifles and pistols. I love long range shooting. There not much to top a 1\4 grouping at 800 yards out. I reload all my ammo and build my own rifles. Add to all this I have been wood working for the better part of 15 years. I just like building stuff. Then to top everything off I love the outdoors. I ride 4 wheelers but the 4x4 type. Camping and stuff.:yipi:

mkrusedc 12.04.2007 01:53 PM

Jetskiing, Martial arts, Bonsai.....

aqwut 12.04.2007 02:39 PM

CR*P a lot of us have similar hobbies.. I too am into everything... It's not hard to get back into our old hobbies :), but enough is enough.... Draining the wallet...

Before
.. I was really into Car Audio, I quit with 4x Kore 15" 5000 Watts RMS Subs... :) ... They were loud, but Sound Quality was sh*t.. Car kept on gettin' broke into here in Windsor, Ontario (Across the river from Detroit, MI)

Now.

- I love girls... but now, down to one girl... LOL
- Computer Gaming & Hardware.. not much into that programming part.. (probably my 2nd fav hobby).
- RCs: Land, Air, Aqua.. of course, my biggest hobby.
- Mountain biking and practicing Trial biking, I love it.. still riding with my 1995 Schwinn S9six Home Grown Factory and 2000 Norco VPS Shore
- Rollerblading: Street with my K2s, and downhilling with my 6" air Rollerblade Coyotes(3 wheels)
- Fishing.. love fishing.. Especially Catfish... that's my favourite.. Deep fried catfish is f*cking awesome.. of course not from the Detroit river..
- Food, I love it as well.. I'm trying to rid of this hobby... LOL
- Music, all music is good. favourite are rock, alternative & R&B and Old school Rap.

and my favourite hobbys are Mowing the lawn, shovelling snow, doing laundry and cleaning the house....j/k:lol::rofl:

It's hard finding time to do all these things while working @ the mushroom farm, but somehow I still manage to do these things... And of course, some of these hobbies are seasonal.. but computers, RC and Biking is all year round.. so I would say those are my favourite 3 hobbies...

Arct1k 12.04.2007 02:40 PM

Ok who had to look those up....

Honestly a 5 year old and a black lab keep me occupied...

But certified geek on pc's so LMK if anyone needs help. If anyone plays BF2 LMK...

hey, we didn't do it! (i'm on the day-twa side). ok, well i didn't do it.

it was funny when i worked in troy - it's a pretty safe and affluent area, but the building i worked in was a 14 story building that was walking distance to the entrance to a major freeway. it was a robber's paradise - every day a number of cars were broken into and would be missing things like entire airbags (all the metal contacts are gold, so they don't corrode) then they'd jump on the freeway and speed away, so they could come back the next day...

one of my hobbies should be guns! but it's not. i hate 'em.

dirt101 12.04.2007 04:21 PM

I do the dirtbike/mx(2007 ktm 200xc) thing on the weekend and the urban mountainbiking thing during the week.(I ride a giant yukon, its nothing special but works for me)

if im not riding one of my bikes im either on here or drivin/working on rcs.
pretty much the only things I ever do. no video games here

I'm pretty busy with work and many childranos but like some of you hi-fi is one of my hobbies:
JLTI SACD player
Rega turntable
Music First Audio transformer preamp
Goldmund power amps (vertically biamped )
Hyperion speakers (SO natural they are great)
Massive homebrew stereo subs (active Peerless 12" design)
Plus the other systems in bedroom etc.
A couple of plasmas but video isn't my thing really.

My other hobbies include (believe it or not) flashlights (mostly DIY from high grade materials). If you want to see some real loonies see www.candlepowerforums.com. LED technology has gone wild- my interest in torches took me into batteries then A123s then BACK into R/C after a few years. Weird, isn't it?

RC and electronics, mountain and trials biking, disc golf, training my puppy, and playing vids on my 8' widescreen :D My main focus is bikes and RC cars, my two loves since I can remember.

ICUBoy 12.04.2007 11:56 PM

Yep the new Crees are brushless, while the old incans are nitro.
Soon the power balance will tip there as well!
Elektrolumens make some nice stuff- it is sad but I get a kick out of it everytime someone sees a 10cm torch, picks it up, looks into the business end, and THEN turns it on....dumb....dumb...dumb (and blind!)

OMG! I'm into flashlights too. I bet there is 100 different types of flashlights around the house here. We don't fear a power outage much at all. LOL

I have a thing for battery powered fans too.

One of my loves, is going out in the boat and fishing. Mother Nature is Beautiful!

Serum 12.05.2007 12:20 PM

I made a LED light for my bike, it's somewhere close to 420 Lumen, (from only two 3W led's)

Led's rock.. The only problem is the color of the light IMO.

BrianG 12.05.2007 01:19 PM

Couldn't you use tinted plastic to get the color you want?

LEDs are nice, especially for flashlights. More power goes to providing light than heat, last longer, and mechanically sound. I don't know how many times I dropped a regular light and broke the filament.

Recently, I picked up a bunch of 5mm white LEDs to play with. I then made a switching power supply (converts 12vDC to ~60v DC) and ran 5 strings of 16 series-connected LEDs with a 25mA constant current circuit for each string. Got the switcher to be right at 83% efficient, which wasn't too bad considering. Makes a neat bench light for the track pit.

Dafni 12.05.2007 01:37 PM

Speaking of LEDs, I just finished an RC18 Body for a mate with LEDs and all. Those new white LEDs are amazing! Little lasers almost.

Serum 12.05.2007 07:00 PM

Using tinted plastic would remove the strength of the LED, you can't add what's not in the spektrum, you can only remove what is too much.

We need PICS daf.....

Yeah the problem is white LEDs are not white- they are blue and yellow in a ratio that tricks your eye- try shining them on a red object and you'll see what's missing. A filter won't help, but true RBG high-power LEDs are on the way...
You're right about the efficiency: high and getting higher!

aqwut 12.05.2007 10:17 PM

that tyros GLass lens makes a nice LED beam IMO.. made by inova.. the T4 is an awesome Rechargeable LED light... working at the mushroom farm and being the grower, I use a lot of different flashlights.. and different light waves as well.. I use the UV LEDs to find diseases bacteria blotch.. it turns bright green... but for now, I'm in love with the fenix cree 2AA light... 2 hours of bright light with some cheap 2600 mAh AA.. about the same size as a 2AA mini Mag...

ICUBoy 12.06.2007 02:18 AM

Yep- really nice aqwut.
Try strapping a couple of Cree Q5s driven at 1000mA in some nice deep reflectors on the top of your truck for a twilight ride- looks like some real headlights on a real truck. Good fun!

BP-Revo 12.06.2007 03:38 AM

Used to ride dirtbikes, stopped after my dad injured his knee (tore his ACL - has had 2 orthoscopic surgery's and 2 ACL replacements since - this one is finally sticking). He says we will ride again...we'll see...

After I got my license cars have become a big part of my hobbies. Even going for cruises is enjoyable for me - and in those quick instants where I get to open her up and listen to her scream and maybe even chirp the tires into the next gear, its just a blast. I also enjoy working on them. I'm like the mechanic of the family. I recently popped in an HID kit in my brother's Evo 8. His first set (which I also put in) burnt out, so I put in a replacement haha. Its a PITA though, have to take off the bumper and all this other junk...

I also used to paint miniatures (Warhammer 40K, if anyone is familiar). I got into it because a bunch of my friends were (and are) into it. I just couldn't get into the gaming, but I sure did enjoy painting them...I'll post up some pictures of some guys later.

Computers. After my laptop's HD died in April and I asked for a new computer, my dad said get a desktop. He said he wanted me to have something where we could upgrade components. So, I ordered the parts and me and my bro got it running (put it together one night, then loaded up the software next day). Its running a 3.0ghz Core 2 Duo (overclocked 2.4ghz E6600), GeForce 8800GTX vid car (A BEAST), 2gigs of ram, SoundBlaster XFi Gamer, and 4 160gb hard drives (1 pair in RAID 0 the other RAID 1). It's a hell of a computer and I suspect it will last a while before I need to upgrade it again.

Video editing/production. I'm taking a Digital Video Production class at school, and its awesome. Part of the class is putting out a news-like cast every 2 weeks (but its on school news, sports, etc).

I've also gone airsofting a few times with buddies, but not really my thing - but hooking up 3S Lipo to my friend's guns was a blast hahaha... (I dont have a gun as I'd rather spend it on RC)

I'm also quite a bit into music. I love nearly all types (can't stand rap or country).
