POP! goes my Mamba Max...

Well, I have no idea WHY it happened, but my Mamba Max is fried...

I hit the track today, and about 15 minutes into my first run, after landing a jump and spinning out, when I went to start, it cogged like crazy...

I thought maybe something was jamming the driveline, maybe the mesh got messed up...so I took it back to the work bench. Everything seemed fine, so I turned it back on, gave it a bit of a test rev, and it seemed to work fine. I walked it back out on the track, put it down, and went to drive to the side so no one would hit it while lapping (while I climbed up to the driver stand) and it just gave a fit of cogging and went nowhere. Took it back to the bench again and now I can't even get the motor to spool...

Anyone have any idea whats wrong? Maybe its NOT the Mamba Max but something else? Its my only ESC for now, so I can't actively test, but I really can't see it being anything else. The fact that it spooled up fine for a bit showed the motor was OK,and, being a Lehner, I give it a low probability of having any problems.

So...10 dollar practice fee for a mere 15 minutes of driving (and that track happens to be closing at the end of this week, so my last time there I get stuck with a broken truck).

BlackedOutREVO 12.14.2007 12:11 AM

Take your speedo and plug it into your g2r's LMT

and then you will know if its the motor or speedo....

That stinks!

mwry13 12.14.2007 12:31 AM

I poped mine too at the Kyosho Race a week ago... literally

I was running 2nd in the bump up spot to the Expert B main and all of a sudden when i came off a triple at Revelation, my car started to cog bad... after a brief attempt to "fix" the problem i ran off the stand to find that my Mamba Board poped out of the case ( the damn servo tape didnt give ) and was banging around the car for who knows how long...

After i practically got out a microscope to find out what broke... a small yellow Piece broke off the bottom of the board ( i dont know what its exactly called )

funny huh? a piece the size of a grain of rice ended my day early.

jnev 12.14.2007 01:06 AM

Don't know what the problem could be... but SoCal Raceway is closing?? That stinks!! Do you know why?? I always went there whenever I went to Orange County to visit relatives.....

BP-Revo 12.14.2007 01:16 AM

I dunno exactly why - they were meant to close sometime in like August but they ended up getting a bit of an extension on their lease...

Not this time I guess. I'm going to hook up the motor to my 1940, I was planning on it - just didn't feel like dealing with it right at this moment. I'm 99% sure its the speedo though.

mwry - did Castle warranty your MM?

They can't pay the ever-increasing lease, and so the owners of the building/property have been waiting for a new business that CAN pay the lease to take SoCal's place. The new business is going to be a preschool... Which I and many others agree won't work out too well, considering there is a Pepboys right next door. IMO, little kids and mechanics/machines won't mix.

However, there is supposed to be a place in Long Beach with like 3 tracks that is either already open or will be opening very soon.

Over the phone I suggested for BP-Revo to check the solder joints on the motor connections. If he can't find anything there, then he can try out the motor with a brand new Mamba Max that I'm going to sell him.

BP-Revo 12.14.2007 02:01 AM

I sort of checked all my solder joints at the track and they seemed fine...I guess I'll check again. I'll try it on my G2R now and see how it is...

nl12 12.14.2007 08:44 AM

I would check to make sure none of the phases on the motor are shorted

aqwut 12.14.2007 11:38 AM

if it runs find with no load.. it could be the caps.. that happened to mine.. all my capps were pooped.... the same thing happened to my Cheap OEMRC ESC.. just replaced the caps.. and it's good... Well, Good luck to ya buddy...

glassdoctor 12.14.2007 12:21 PM

I had one do this once... and it was toast. Mine would not even run a MM motor.

MetalMan 12.14.2007 12:34 PM

Hey Mike, it's looking like that MM ESC is going to show up today .

BP-Revo 12.14.2007 06:48 PM

Sweet! Looks like I'll be up and running way faster than I thought (I still haven't had a chance to test the other motor to make sure it is indeed the ESC, I'll probably do that this weekend - its going to be a busy one for me for sure).

crazyjr 12.14.2007 09:08 PM

Have you checked that the motor hasn't shorted? I had one short two phases and all it did was cogg and not move. there will be resistance only in certian places ( feel like maybe a bad bearing or mis aligned)

BP-Revo 12.15.2007 01:07 AM

Well, I just tested it in my G2R. Solder connections are fine as well. It still cogs. MetalMan guessed fried phase from the evidence, and I agree...there's really no other explanation.

I went and got his spare MM from him, so I'll solder that up when I have a chance. I'm going to big bear on Sunday to film something for my Video Production class, and I think I'm gonna bring my CRT to do a bit of snow running.

BlackedOutREVO 12.15.2007 01:30 AM

The LMT is the problem? lol the phase thing is confusing me:oops: lol.......

That stinks

BP-Revo 12.15.2007 03:28 AM

No no...not the LMT, the Mamba Max is the problem. If I had the choice I'd take the MM as a problem any day...

A free replacement that takes about 2 weeks as compared to an expensive replacement that may take months (if its even possible).

Ohh, ok sorry for the dumb question lol....

I also have to send in my MM, It got fried when it was in my cyclone, and a dumb ace little kid ran over my cyclone with his bike, and it crushed the caps, and the heasink came off, its a big mess:no::surprised:

Robert 12.15.2007 02:17 PM

Kind of dangerous running around kids on bikes no? Did they warranty it?

I wasnt, I was running all by myself, and then a kid comes flying down the street, so I parked it in the curb, and he goes from the middle, over to my car and like jumps it.......:whip:

I dont know yet, im thinking the flat rate thing, a new one for 50 bucks....

suicideneil 12.15.2007 06:09 PM

Hmmm, as I learned when I was much much younger, little kids are attracted like magnets to moving or stationary R/Cs. If you see one (kid) coming, bring the truck back to you until the 'danger' has passed....

Yeah, that was my dumb mistake for not taking it to my side, but never once when I have ran my rc cars have I had this problem, usually the kids stand with, or behind me and watch.....

I duno, but back on topic lol......

BP-Revo 12.15.2007 08:01 PM

Wow he tried to jump it? If I were you I would have pulled out some bigger/stronger truck and crashed into him with it (I'm not serious here lol)

But yea, I just got one from MetalMan, so I'm good to go. I'll be sending my ESC to CC this Monday.

chilledoutuk 12.15.2007 08:01 PM

thats funny i had a similar incidence with an car i was driving and a car came so i pulled to the curb to let them go by but they kept heading straight for the car.

Just when the wheel was inches from the car i reacted and had to slam my 4wd buggy up a raised curb to avoid the car tyre rolling over my car.

From now on i do not trust any driver/rider and evade them myself as you cannot trust people as there stupidity could cost you a lot of time and money.

Well guys this was a touring car, not a truck, so I couldnt get up the curb if I wanted to lol when im right in front of it.... (we have the curved ones)

And he didnt try, he did unfortunately...... I wanted to go throw him off the bike, but I walked inside pissed off....... Probably better then throwing him off the bike lol:whistle::lol::rofl:

BP-Revo 12.15.2007 08:42 PM

Nah...I would have taught the stupid kid a lesson.

chilledoutuk, I have heard of all kinds of stories where people purposely run over RCs.

This is why I always drive them onto my driveway/grass or right next to me when a car comes (or sometimes, I will pull it under a parked car) to make sure they can't get at it...

I wanted to, believe me lol......

As I said, its a touring car, so I could of ran across the street and picked it up, but I didnt, as now I pay the price....... I wish I would of ran it into the grass a foot away, but the curb was in my way

Mike_D 12.16.2007 03:53 PM

Where is a good place to buy replacment caps for the MM? I think i just blew mine. The esc still works fine, the servo works and all the lights work as if motor should be working but its not. I have tried several motors and it is definitly the esc.

DrKnow65 12.16.2007 08:02 PM

digikey.com has just about anthing you could want as far as electrical bits and pieces.

Mike_D 12.16.2007 08:12 PM

Thanks Drknow65, you wouldn't happen to have any part numbers would you?

DrKnow65 12.16.2007 08:12 PM

I had to avoid a kid on a bike with my e-maxx once. He was going straight for it. I swerved to miss him and ended up under my real car. I had to jack the thing up to retrieve my e-maxx. It broke lots of stuff. I was ... unhappy.:whip:

suicideneil 12.17.2007 12:54 PM

I have an idea. Take an old shell, and cover it in small nails/tacks... next time someone trues to jump on it or drive over it.... they wont try again....

Well, by under a car, I usually mean a truck. We, and one of my neighbors a few houses down, have Dodge Ram 1500's, and any of my trucks easily slip under them without any clearance issues. The bonus side is that they are rarely driven as daily drivers, so most of the times I happen to be driving on my street (weekdays), both trucks are there, so I have a few safe spots.

LOL, my mom and dad would be like WTF? They would think I have lost it lol:lol:

suicideneil 12.17.2007 07:36 PM

Just tell them you're making an RC hedgehog/ porcupine....

DrKnow65 12.17.2007 10:36 PM

I used to put nails on the fromt of my first gold pan rc10 and chase the kids on bikes out of my area so I could play in peace :) That rc10 had two screws on the front that were just perfect.

I don't ever manage to go under cars, I always seem to run right into the tire :( I just stuffed my new Academy SBV2 under a car this week. She pulled up all stealth like just outside my periferal vision, and when I made my next high speed pass WHAM right into her street side rear tire. She voluntered to back up a bit when she saw how hard the RC was lodged under the tire... Said it looked like a terrorist attack, this thing flying out of nowhere to blast her car :) sometimes a little humor goes a long way :)
