MM update is up!

saw the update for the MM at castle's web site!

The update changes. Nice to see the vastly improves cogging. Interesting to hear the performance with one of cogging neus.

bdebde 01.22.2008 02:45 AM

I may take the Neu I run on a MGM and try it out on a MM just to see how it works now.

johnrobholmes 01.22.2008 04:05 AM

Mamba 25's get brushed mode too.

Wow, this has officially killed every 18th scale brushed esc. Like the new tekin controllers. Why anyone would buy a brushed motor and esc for an 18th scale vehicle is beyond me anyway. Good to hear, now some of the smaller crwlers have another esc option. A 55 turn motor in a light vehicle could probably be run by the 25 now.

johnrobholmes 01.22.2008 10:55 AM

Yep Yep.

lutach 01.22.2008 11:15 AM

Did you guys download the update? How are you liking it? I downloaded and put it in my TC3 and tbh I didn't see any difference. If anyone has seen any difference please post you settings.

MetalMan 01.22.2008 01:02 PM

Last night I made a quick vid of before and after the update, with a Neu motor. The frequency of operation has definitely changed. Check it out:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?do...90454808&hl=en (make take up to an hour to become live, I just uploaded it)

I have yet to install the update on the Mamba 25 in my rock crawler. It already ran the outrunner pretty well, but hopefully this will make it run even better!

BrianG 01.22.2008 01:07 PM

Video works for me. Yes, it does seem MUCH smoother! Nice to see it in action.

Thanks for posting this!

jhautz 01.22.2008 01:12 PM

It sure sounds like its smoother on the light throttle start up Metalman.

I have only one word for this!!!! FINALLY!!!

lutach 01.22.2008 01:15 PM

It did cog a little in my TC3 with the N80, but when I put it in my MBX5T with 4S lipos and the Mega ACn22/30/2 it was much better then before the update. I also tried my Schulze 18.97 afterwards and the MM still can't beat the Schulze in smooth starts, but I'm impressed on how well the MM worked though. I was going to try the MM in my BPP truck with the 1521/1Y, but I couldn't find my 4mm to 5.5mm adapter, but the video posted above just proves it works good with the Neu.

Just go Play 01.22.2008 03:18 PM

I just tried this with my FLM Emaxx and a novak 6.5 I had sitting around and cogging is reduced to where this is a usable combo now. Previously cogging was so severe that the MM would over heat very quickly and required pushing the truck to get it to move.

This looks like a decent upgrade that should allow running some previously unusable motors with the MM.

snellemin 01.22.2008 03:21 PM

Update runs the LRP 4.5 much smoother now.

johnrobholmes 01.22.2008 03:37 PM

One thing I like to keep reminding myself: Castle has been doing this for about 2 years, whereas Quark and Schulze have been at it for about 8 to 10 (maybe longer?). It can certainly only get better.

phildogg 01.22.2008 04:32 PM

glad to hear it works!!

Makes sense since Novak uses slotted stators, just like Neu...

crazyjr 01.22.2008 04:43 PM

I have not tryed it on a 4 poler, but i updated all three of mine. They all seem to feel better and start slower than before the update. I expect that they shopuld run cooler due to better startup

MetalMan 01.22.2008 05:10 PM

One thing about my test video, that 4s pack was basically dead when I did the tests, so it's possible that skewed the "after" part.

Anybody else notice how the frequency during braking has also changed? Makes that Neu sound really weird!

lutach 01.22.2008 05:17 PM

All I can say it is working with a 6 pole Mega using 4S lipos and that is good. I did try to use 6S and that was a no go.

BrianG 01.22.2008 06:05 PM

lol, 6s? Did you really expect it to work at 6s? How about something a little more reasonable like 5s...

VintageMA 01.22.2008 06:45 PM

Interesting - downloaded 3.03 just before leaving work. Got home and all of a sudden 3.04 was available. Wonder what changed?

lutach 01.22.2008 06:49 PM

Odd. I downloaded again.

lutach 01.22.2008 06:53 PM

New firmaware as well. 1.17

Arct1k 01.22.2008 06:55 PM

Bug fix - It has gone to final now

Force a full re-arm after manual programming
Minor bug: setting drag brake via stick programming showed a custom value of 1% below the desired value on Castle Link
Minor bug: Loading and saving programming information to a file did not properly update calibration data

lutach 01.22.2008 07:31 PM

I just fried my MM. This stinks. I downloaded the new firmware and I just tried it again in my TC3. Plugged the 2S lipos and as soon as I turned the MM on, a few sparks came out.

glassdoctor 01.22.2008 07:42 PM

Want to trade one of your HW speedos for one of my MM? :)

 My HW is kicking butt. Drove it today until it hit the cut off and got 25 minutes run time. I might have found the right gearing for my TC3 and HW/N80 combo.

entjoles 01.22.2008 07:49 PM

well i tried the update on a novak hv 4.5 motor in the xt8 and it was much better as well, still cogged, but gearing way down may make it drivable but the kv rating is to high, the calc. said it was like 72k rpms and 85 mph, so i wont be running this!!!!!

cant wait till more reply, i think a neu is my next step:yipi:, as long as it this fixes the cogging

VintageMA 01.22.2008 08:12 PM

I am used to deadband being expressed as a % of the throttle travel. There doesn't seemto be any documentation on how Castle is expressing it in milliseconds. Also the milliseconds ratings of the trasmitter calibration seem odd. Any thoughts?

rchippie 01.22.2008 08:26 PM

Will there be any benifite when using two pole motors like my lehner 1950 or is this mainly for 4 pole motors ?.

BrianG 01.22.2008 08:34 PM

The number of poles had nothing to do with the MM issue, it was with slotted stators. Don't know if other motor types were affected...

Just checking . I just downloaded the update maybe i'll try it out tommorow & see if i feel a difference. Do you think the update will affect the settings i am currently using ?.

BrianG 01.22.2008 08:38 PM

lol, no idea. Since I'm not running a slotted stator motor, I'm gonna wait to see what problems other people have with the update before I do so.

It's to late for me i all ready down loaded the update into my computer .

gixxer 01.22.2008 09:35 PM

great to see they finally got an update for slotted motors. I will wait a little though to see how it works out for people running the neu motors.

MetalMan 01.22.2008 09:42 PM

Just got back in from a quick bash-type run with my Hyper 8: MM Neu 1512/2.5D, 4s Lipo, 4 extra 35v 3300uf low ESR caps, geared for ~35mph (14/46). In all honesty, I just about couldn't get it to cog with the new software. From stop to any throttle position, the MM got it right every time. I then pushed the MM backwards to ~5mph, and grabbed a lot of forward throttle. About 80% of the time the MM stopped the buggy quickly, and shot it forward without anything I'd call cogging. The other 20% was only minor cogging, but was still MUCH better than the previous software version.

This run was done WITHOUT a heatsink (it popped off last night), and after roughly 4mins of some rough bashing on grass the top FETs were maybe 90 deg. F, with ambient being about 60 deg. F.

Too bad for Quark, I strongly believe the MM is now extremely capable of running Neu motors (and I thought it was prior to the update).

If the front axle on my crawler weren't broken, I would comment on how the Mamba 25 runs an outrunner compared to before.

Well I just tried 6s2p A123 - 20.2V on the batteries and it armed fine.

This was on a brand new MM - I ran it in the basement for a few mins and seemed fine.

Don't think I'd trust it but wanted to see if it would arm. It did! :diablo:

snellemin 01.22.2008 10:16 PM

I ran mine with 6s1p A123 this past Sunday. It works for a few seconds before it shut down, which is enough for the 132 feet dragrace.

That's impressive. I wouldn't mind running an MM on 5s A123 in a savage until the MMM came out. Was that a fully charged A123 pack. I'm confused with A123 voltages.
