Project Super-VBS-CF-Gorillamaxx!!!
Hi everyone,
Well I finally recieved my G3 CF chassis from Mike today, and now I nearly have enough parts to put together a roller!! This collection of parts has taken me roughly a year, and god knows how much money (mostly because I don't want to know  ). Its pretty much going to be a full Supermaxx with a Gorillamaxx chassis. I'm planning on going with a Plettenberg Bigmaxximum with the fan, and an MMM ESC if it is ever released... My plan is to get wrenching tomorrow and have a roller (with no wheels, don't ask me how that works  ) I'm still waiting on standoffs for the shocks and pillowballs though, so might not be quite complete. Anyway, enough chat, here are some teaser pics :mdr: , hope you like: Everything shot: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00787.jpg Towered VBS with Ti skids: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00791.jpg RacerX suspension with setbacks, hopefully High Impacts soon: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00788.jpg 8 Supershocks with Progressive 1/8th piggybacks: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00795.jpg Gorillamaxx single speed and single motor mount, Fastlane halfcase, Strobe slipper and Sprong: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00792.jpg UE GenIV servo saver: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00797.jpg |

More to come... |
That looks like its gonna be a hell of a truck. Make sure you post progress pics on the build. And I dont blame you for not wanting to add it all up. If I added some of my projects up I would probably cry, but a little at a time makes it hurt less.
|
Wow looks like it will be a fun build... Lots of patience to wait a year to get all the bits together!
|
That looks really nice! It's so fun to get to build a truck from scratch. I hope it will be great, at least i think so. Keep on with the building now so we can get some more pictures.
|
It will indeed be an awesome truck.
|
It will definitely be amazing!
Am I the only one who is reminded of Papa's truck? |
:surprised:WOW! that looks REAL fun!

Nice!!!
Well, we can't say that it's gonna be 100% similar to Papa's truck. Heh, my truck is way better than Papa's though, I assure you this...;P |
Mmm... As in Aluminummmmm. Looks like somebody picked up all the UE closeout parts!

i actually saw papa'a truck in the UE gallery when i was searching for pics of the cf chassis, and when i saw it i was like, "yep, i think thats what i want!!" :mdr: So yeh, this truck definately took some cues from papa, Not sure if i can do this, or if you'll be able to see it if you're not on the UE forums, but heres the link to papa's gallery, http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...s&c=279&page=7, scroll to the bottom
A year seems like a long time, but i was in year 12, which is the last year of high school in Australia, so between studying and exams, i needed this parts hunt kept me sane!! i'll be sure to post progress pics along the way, thanks for the great comments |
ok, i've got a progress report after some heavy wrenching yesterday. I got the tranny, VBS and chassis assembled, and the tranny in the chassis. Unfortunately i ran into a problem with the VBS hinge pins, so i'm off the find a dremel today so i can cut off some exccess pin. Here are the pics :D
Tranny: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00804.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00803.jpg VBS with 8 spyder diffs: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00805.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00808.jpg Chassis with extension. I got a good pic which compares the Gorillamaxx extension to the UE monoblock extension: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00811.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00812.jpg Mounted tranny: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00817.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00816.jpg Overall its coming along nicely, I'm going away untill next Thursday so not mcuh will be done till then, but i'll keep you guys posted jordan |
very nice, i need to not look at threads like this. it may end up costing me some $$
|
that looks fantastic, jordan - you're going to love it!
do you have a custom rear driveshaft? i'm not sure how the gorilla chassis works for length, but i had to have one made with the lightning chassis and monoblock. great job - can't wait to see more. |
at the moment it looks as if the extended rear dogbone off of the gmaxx will fit with some fuel tubing in the drive cups, i guess i'll only be able to see for sure after the final mockup
|
well i bought a dremel, (best invention ever!!!) and got the hinge pins shaved so now they fit perfectly flush with the VBS. I managed to get the suspension mounted and the cvd's in. I've also dremeled down the standoffs to fit the piggybacks and also to clear the DD wingmount, i still have to actually mount the shocks though... anyways, heres some pics:
8mm cvd's with booties: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00824.jpg some pics of the suspension and cvd's mounted on the VBS: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00819.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00822.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00828.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00826.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00830.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00829.jpg more to come in the next few days!!! |
Thats so beautiful it brought a tear to my eye...
|
you put the upperarms on the rear side on wrong. they need to point to the front of the truck.
Building these trucks is my favourite too. Driving them hurts though.. |
beautiful!
must...not... spend ... more...money.... ugh! its so hard not too after seeing a thread like this. keep up the good work. |

http://www.unlimitedengineering.com/...ore/10107.html thanks for all the comments guys, i've got the shocks mounted and i'm nearly ready to mount the front and rear ends on the chassis, i just checked out my gen4 SS though and the bearings kinda crumbled as i pulled them out, i'll get some new bearings and post pics when its all mounted :yipi: jordan |
hi everyone, i have an update on the build
I have mounted the front and rear ends to the chassis, the Gmaxx centre driveshafts line up really well. They were a bit of a tight fit into the UE drive cups but a little fuel tubing in each cup and the problem was solved. :mdr: I also had to rebuild my servo saver, as when i opened it to clean it the bearings kind of crumbled out onto the floor. But a set of new bearings and shes running like a champ. I'm just waiting on some UE pillowballs so i can mount the knuckles and cvd's properly, they should be here in the next few days... I'll post pics as soon as i get the pillowballs and finish up the suspension :na: thanks jordan |
pics pics pics!!!
ok, well i'm as far as i can go into the build without spending another $600, so here are the pics:
shocks mounted, you might be able to see where i dremeled the rear standoffs to clear the DD wingmount: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00845.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00842.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00843.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00838.jpg got the pillowballs!!: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00852.jpg some fully assembled pics: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00856.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00857.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00858.jpg continued in the next post... |
one of my favourites:

Definately getting some new shoes before the end of the build, im thinking 40 series wabash dyed black, with bowties :mdr:: http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00873.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00870.jpg thats all for now, i'll keep you guys posted on any progress, but $600 is alot of money  jordan |
I gotta say... They just don't get prettier than that. Absolutely smashing. Great job Jordan.
Now get some electronics in that thing and get it dirty!!! |
Awesome looking machine, nice work dude. What do you have to spend $600 on? Electronics and motor/batteries Im guessing.... ouch.
|
nope, not even that. My shopping cart at impakt consists of:
Spektrum dx3.0 radio system 250 Spektrum DSM 3-Channel Micro RX 100 Alum. servo arm 5 Hitec 5955tg steering servo 105 Ofna high downforce wing 13 40 series wabash rims 32 40 series bowties 46 Jconcepts illusions tango body 26 (i've rounded all the above prices) all together, $577, hopefully i'll be able to sell the 2 recievers i get with the radio, and get back at least $120... fingers crossed oh yeah, its $70 shipping on top of that :surprised: |
Yikes....
|
it appears i no longer hold the record for the most expensive SuperMaxx.
|
Looks AMAZING! That thing would look bad ass with a Traxxas Exo-Carbon wing.

well you did say your 600 doesn't even include electronics or motor yet. you'll see - it all adds up. just when you think you're just about done, you realize you have to drop another big chunk of change. :mdr:
$2k is pretty low though... maybe i'll still hold the title lol. |
yeh i know, i'm estimating around 600-700 for a motor, ESC, charger and lipo's. :gasp: plus the 600 for the other stuff. I'm getting giddy thinking about it
but yeh, i have bought and sold alot on ebay making profits, and also found some really good deals. I got the VBS and 8 spyder diffs separately, but all up it cost me $450 for those parts. The tranny, slipper (including sprong and other goodies) and motor plate cost me a little over $150, and i got the racerX suspension (not including the setbacks) for $250! so i have been able to get some bargains to keep the cost down over the build :yipi: i don't doubt i'll be nipping at your heels soon though scott  jordan |
those are good bargains! i managed to find my towered VBS and 8 spider gears for $550, and i thought that was a great deal (considering brand new, all of those parts are around $1k). i think what put me over the edge, though, was the last part i needed: the lightning chassis. i had to buy an entire SuperMaxx roller just to get it, and sell the other parts off. bye bye savings! lol.
the good news: you have an incredible truck and it's going to be so worth it when you finish your build. others may say the maxx platform is outdated, and i agree in stock form. but a UE truck is still like no other. |
Thanks alot!
I think the maxx platform is outdated as well, even the newer 3905 model. But a supermaxx is definately a whole different beast than an E-maxx. You're lucky you got to even own a Lightning. Right now I just cant ustify spending $800+ for just a chassis :surprised: |

i must admit, the cf weave does look cool. But the design of the wing just isn't aggressive enough for my liking
|
About time for an update me thinks. Well, I haven't really made much progress on the build. I just bought a new road bike so I'd feel guilty about dishing some more cash out onto my SM so soon
I have however flipped the tranny and diffs so I can mount the motor facing towards the rear, (thanks to Suicideneil for the suggestion) and also aquired a set of Ti VBS jounces. The rear skid needed a tiny tweak to get it to fit with the jounces but other than that everything ran pretty smoothly. Those jounces make a HUGE difference, now the front and rear ends feel really solid. Hopefully in an impact (if the truck ever sees one ) the jounces will act as a spring so the skid is taking the full force. Enough of me, here are some pics, they're a little better this time because I didn't use the flash, so everything doesn't have a yellow tinge to it. http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00894.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00905.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00907.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00909.jpg http://i212.photobucket.com/albums/c...x/DSC00912.jpg thanks for looking jordan |
I need a Kleenex.
You know whats weird, I spent sunday evening removing my X-brace motor mount and flipping the tranny around just like you have.... only my tranny (or the half thats left) is plastic, and it doesnt have a awesome strobe on it either.... I did however buy a new motor mount, and plan to use it as a template to make my own Gorillamaxx style single motor mount clones from a 3mm thick sheet of 6061 I also have aquired. Now, if you could just turn off the date/time function on your camera, then I will have some really nice pictures to print off and drool over..... |
If you want I could photoshop that out on your pics for you.
Your truck makes me feel like a deli since I just made cream of mushroom soup in my pants. |
