Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery...

http://www.commonsenserc.com/page.ph...po_wiring.html

Look familiar? They could have at least asked...

Serum 01.29.2008 04:33 PM

Cool! i'll send them a small message!

BrianG 01.29.2008 04:34 PM

I actually sent them an email:

Quote:

Hello,

I was browsing your site when I came upon this page: http://www.commonsenserc.com/page.ph...po_wiring.html

I noticed it was VERY similar to the functionality originally created by me at: http://scriptasylum.com/rc_speed/_lipo.html

The source code driving the diagram is also the same. Now, I don't mind you using this tool but I would have appreciated someone to contact me requesting permission first. Or at the very least, credit of some sort somewhere on the page.

Sincerely,

Brian Gosselin

Serum 01.29.2008 04:36 PM

Their chat-function ROCKS!

BrianG 01.29.2008 04:37 PM

This isn't the first time someone tried to steal something I made. A couple years ago, I had made a type of popup-window that could not be stopped by any popup blocker program out there (used DHTML instead). Someone grabbed the code and was selling it as theirs. Well, I stumbled across it, found it VERy familiar, but the code was gibberish. The amateurs used a really weak form of "encryption" to hide the code, but a couple minutes and I cracked it (was simply ASCII code shifting). I sent them a message, but since they were overseas, could do nothing about it. Poo.

lol, what did they say? Like I said in my message, I really don't mind, but some credit would have been nice. :sarcastic:

Serum 01.29.2008 04:44 PM

serum:

Question
who made that lipo wiring diagram on your site? it appears to be something you guys sure didn't made!

admin:
Which page are you referring to?

Serum:
This one;

Serum:
http://www.commonsenserc.com/page.ph...po_wiring.html

Serum:
It seems to be the product of Brian Gosselin! yet i don't find his name anywhere on your site as a 'thank you'

Serum:
The source code is the same. He made it for the customers of RC-Monster. (or the users of the RC-Monster forum)

admin:
I don't do the website work here. Do you have a tech question?

Serum:
Okay, i understand. No, no tech question. It's just not fair that a person gets no credit for his work. If you want to tell that to the webmaster, or to the person who gave permission to use this diagram. It's not appropriate.

admin:
I will pass the notes of the chat to them.

Serum:
Thanks! Have a great day.

admin:
Your welcome. Call anytime.

suicideneil 01.29.2008 05:41 PM

Cheeky bastards. Well, since Brian is a computer wizz, maybe he could *cough* send a small 'package' to that site which might render it toast?...

And teach me how to by-pass username & password pop-up screens for, um, certain types of sites too.......

EDIT: I was serious about that last bit, and I sent them a nice email too.

lutach 01.29.2008 05:48 PM

Brian,

Show no mercy , put them on the stick :diablo:. Just joking. Call them up, they should be at least paying you and/or like you said, giving you credit for doing it.

BrianG 01.29.2008 05:49 PM

No no, I wouldn't do that! No need to get nasty. Besides, I would hope their site security is tighter than that. Since it's running PHP, it's probably on a Unix/Linux box. If it was a Windows box...

And it's easy to get by those user/password screens for those "certain sites" - pay for an account.

BTW: Thread moved to the proper place. I have no idea why I started it in the "general electric" area.

suicideneil 01.29.2008 05:59 PM

Ohwell, I'll live with the 30 second sample clips then....

Still, that is a serious bit thieving happening, I hope they apologise and give you the credit you deserve- that whole scriptasylum site is pure gold, a great many people would be lost without it, and for someone to pinch bits of it is just not right; its just not cricket dear boy.

BrianG 01.29.2008 06:02 PM

lol, you need more than 30 second clips?

Yeah, a little blurb at the bottom of the page would be nice. Maybe throw in a little store credit.

Sammus 01.29.2008 06:10 PM

is it possible to make your code unstealable (yeah its a word :sarcastic:).. or at least v.hard to steal?

BrianG 01.29.2008 06:19 PM

Not if it uses client-side code. My site does have the option for server-side scripts (MySQL/PHP/etc) but any change the user make would require trips to the server and have the web server write out the final output. I find performance to be much better to have everything downloaded to the client and use scripts to change any active content. The largest file I use in all pages, library.js, is only 50kB, so client-based code works fine and would almost be a waste of time to make it query a database like this site does.

The most I could do is use a form of encryption scheme, but that is fairly easy to crack. It would only keep the honest thieves honest. It also makes updating the pages a PITA because I'd have to unencode it, make changes, and reencode it. Blah.

cart213 01.29.2008 06:35 PM

Be careful, Brian! They might steal your Motor Selector next and put it on their Motor Wizrd page!

http://www.commonsenserc.com/page.ph...tor-wizard.php

Seriously, though, hopefully they will give credit where it is due on the lipo chart. Your scriptasylum page is the best!!!

I was seriously expecting to see it when I went there

BrianG 01.29.2008 06:41 PM

lol, me too, but that's more specific to airplanes. I did check the other pages just in case though...

BL_RV0 01.29.2008 08:59 PM

how about, "Give me some lipos and we'll call it even!"

Pliska 01.29.2008 09:39 PM

That stinks! I hate theives, they should have just asked..:gasp:

Oh Brian ty for all the Calculators ect that you have made, has saved me a TON of time trying to figure out a good setup!!:yipi::yipi: *bows down to the master of BL*

No problem! And not a "master" - that's Serum's and Mike's title, I'm just an apprentice.

lincpimp 01.30.2008 01:33 AM

We have to get Brian some sort of costume (like serum's anteater outfit), then he can be a master! And he could pick up the chicks in style too.

BrianG 01.30.2008 01:42 AM

lol, my g/f wouldn't like that, but I appreciate the thought! Hmm. But what costume to use? I've always been partial to Spider-man, but don't think ANYONE wants to see me in anything resembling a skin-tight costume.

You have a g/f? Thought that your were still married? I must not be paying attention. I think the "Spider man, the later years" costume would be great. You would be fighting the womens off with a stick!

BrianG 01.30.2008 01:54 AM

Yeah, I am technically still married, but since the ex is still sticking around here until she can afford to move she said I could meet other people, so I did. And they know about each other. :sigh: my life is too complicated...

Wow, starting to sound like an episode of friends that was rejected due to some sort of decentcy requirements. Good luck with that man, sounds like alot of fun. If you need a break you are more than welcome to my guest room. It even comes equiped with my wife's best friend about 3 nights a week! She likes older guys to, so you are set. Bring the Spider man costume!

BrianG 01.30.2008 02:01 AM

Where you located?

Slidell, Louisiana, about 30 miles north of New Orleans. Mardi Gras this weekend, and Monday and Tuesday. Good time to go down there, get drunk, and "see the sights" if you catch my drift. All you have to remember is hide your money, keep an eye on the portopotties, and yell "show your t..."

Great fun, If you like drunks and throwing stuff at people!

BrianG 01.30.2008 02:06 AM

lol, a little far away for me, but thanks for the offer. Does sound fun though! After all, who doesn't like throwing things at people?

lincpimp 01.30.2008 02:11 AM

Actually my car apinter is from misouri (sp?), just up the road from sike. He goes up there frequently, so I may hitch a ride! How close is Iowa from there? I suck at geography!

BrianG 01.30.2008 10:34 AM

Iowa is the next state up from Missouri...

I'll be there from afternoon on the 17th to the 22nd. Going to meet my g/f's family and do a bunch of things (Disneyland, Hollywood, sightseeing, family stuff, etc). Not sure how much extra time (if any) I'll have to hang out. Would be fun though!

BL_RV0 01.30.2008 12:27 PM
