Looks like a nice budget setup. Is that zippy pack from UnitedHobbies?

Sure is. Got it yesterday.

About as budget as you can get while not having to worry about stuff blowing up (hopefully).. :)

JeffEmbracedDC 01.31.2008 11:57 PM

Got it most of the way finished up.

Photos probably would have looked cooler with some clean tires.. :).. anyway... Only things left would be a better strap (notice the cable-tie loop on the current battery strap) and some better wire management. Maybe some heat-resistant braid for the wires passing next to the motor to the rec. box or something.

It maybe cheap but is still looks really good. I'm going racing on the weekend and I am thinking that after I do I am going to want to build an electric buggy. You are going to have to tell us how that lipo goes.

That looks very similar to my setup before I switched to the novak, the primary difference being the motor was blue (9L) and the battery was black. :) The MM is hard too see but it's behind the motor.

JeffEmbracedDC 02.01.2008 03:37 AM

The battery tray itself was made from white-finished aluminum. I then covered it with black adhesive vinyl. the white didn't look good :) The vinyl was scrap from a sign-making shop. I was charged only $3 for about 4 square feet worth which is plenty to easily cover 5-6 boxes... The padding inside is "Darice" brand "Foamies Sheets" sold at walmart for $0.47 per 9x12" sheet. It does not have an adhesive back but when matched with 3M Carpet Tape (very thin) it adheres quite well! The lower layer of foam is running lengthwise with holes cut for the button heads to sit in (as pictured above) while the top layer runs width wise and up the side walls to better cover the heads of the screws and protect the battery which is also pictured.

Here are the mounts we made for the box. Pretty simple. They raise the box just enough to clear the radius of the chassis edge and the side guard dirt deflector thing.

I ran it for a few minutes outside.. and decided to take some more shots. I kept my street-basher tires on. You can tell about half of the lugs are missing. Pretty crappy tires.. but I guess you can't complain for $20/set of 4 shipped premounted.

Tons of power! I can't imagine wanting more for any reason. Way more than you'd need for any normal track (unless you're doing a speed run or something). I hope to test runtimes tomorrow.

Towerpro MG996R servo. Amazing bang for the buck. Behaves like an $80 servo. Actual cost: under $12 at Hobby City

nice pics :)
I really like Losi 8ight brushless conversions, both 8ight and 8ight-T.
I'm looking for a race roller 8ight-t sale to make it electric :).
many thanks for the pictures, you know we love them.

JeffEmbracedDC 02.01.2008 05:43 AM

Yeah.. I had a brushless Hyper 7 for a while that I never really got to use much. It had an external receiver pack, 12x nimh batteries and was just kind of messy. At the same time as I finished my Hyper 7, Chapito started racing his electric 8ight-t at our local track. After a while I decided I wanted to take on a new challenge. Nitro. I had only ran it once before and didn't have good luck but figured I'm older now (I was probably 13 back then) and it would be fun to tackle. Well it's alright. Not great.. not terrible. I wasn't using the hyper barely at all, so I sold it and decided to convert the 8ight. In the meantime Chapito sold his 8ight-T and replaced it with an 8ight. So this week end will be the first BL 8ight battle at our track (as long as I can make it out there). Can't wait.

It would be great to get some video.. maybe I'll bring my video equipment along and get some video!

JeffEmbracedDC 02.01.2008 05:48 AM

Still got nitro residue on the body behind the pipe cutout. Ha

JeffEmbracedDC 02.03.2008 02:18 AM

Just raced it tonight for the first time. Ran fantastically. Tons of power - though the motor was a bit hot (180f) after a 7 minute main. The ESC stayed fairly cool at about 125f.. Batteries were great and stayed under 95f all night. Capacitor and CCBEC stayed very cool (under 90f).

I'm thinking of gearing up one or two teeth on the pinion to cool the motor down a bit.

The batteries seemed to perform very well. I didn't have the chance to check actual run-time as I was re-topping-off between qualifiers.. but it stayed very cool under some pretty hard racing.

We shot some video of both buggies. It should be posted up within a day or two.

Conversion looks fantastic! Definitely keep us updated on the Zippy pack, I'll been thinking of get one to use for practice if nothing else. Can't beat the price:yipi:

drkros3 02.03.2008 11:13 PM

wow this is kinda making me want to build a eletric buggy. since im selling my revo i might just think about doing one of these

good build man.

MTBikerTim 02.03.2008 11:17 PM

I am planning on going with A123 in my savage but if these zippy pack turn out OK maybe I'll get those.

Thanks! I definitely like 1/8th buggies. Bashing or racing I think they're great vehicles.

Not much experience with them yet, but after two 5 min. qualifiers and a 7 min. main (with re-peaks between) the battery stayed very very cool and had a ton of power. After the main I was playing on the track and learned I could easily make the back triple which very few cars can do.. and even triple the first 3 whoops which I not a single other car was attempting. The point is - lots of performance so far. I'll hopefully be using this battery for racing 2-4 times a month.. and I'll definitely keep everyone updated on it since they're fairly new to the community.

Is the 8XL C can the same KV as the regular 8XL?

As far as I know the only difference between is the fins on the can. Same rotor, windings, magnets, etc. I'd ask someone with more experience for the final say - but as far as I know that's the case.

jnev 02.04.2008 10:21 PM

Great looking conversion. I am thinking about doing a 8ight conversion myself... have you happened to upload the video yet?

JeffEmbracedDC 02.04.2008 10:24 PM

Don't have the video of mine up yet.. but I'm uploading a video of Chapitos as we speak. I'll try to post them both up tonight.

JeffEmbracedDC 02.04.2008 10:57 PM

Okay so here's some clips of last saturdays races..

http://rc.jeffjassky.com/videos/feb-2-08/

The video will require quicktime. If you don't have quicktime you can download it here http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/

The audio mixing is really really rough.. I'll be uploading a fixed version in a day or so along with the video of my buggy.

jnev 02.05.2008 12:07 AM

The video doesn't seem to be working for me. Do you think you can upload it to You tube or somehow host it somewhere else where it will be viewable?

Yes. Fiego, Wanderer, Nemesis all use the same internals.

I've updated the URL. See if that works for you.

MTBikerTim 02.05.2008 12:56 AM

The video worked for me. Looks good, makes me want to race buggies. That other nitro buggy was quick.

jnev 02.05.2008 01:58 AM

My computer must be messed up, because I still can't view it.... the link doesn't even load on my comp....

Got the other video.. of my 8ight this time.

High Quality: http://rc.jeffjassky.com/videos/brus...ht_feb_2nd_08/

Kinda rough editing again.. but it gets the point across well enough.

Got the new video on youtube...

Thanks to Chapito for filming during my race.

jnev 02.06.2008 12:33 AM

Big thank you for posting it onto You Tube. That was great fun watching. The buggy seems to be doing quite well for you.

JeffEmbracedDC 02.06.2008 12:37 AM

Thanks :).. yeah it's great so far.. except it turns out that all of my shocks were completely empty when I pulled it off of the track. No wonder it was handling so weirdly :oh:

dezfan 02.06.2008 12:46 AM

Looked a little like it was riding a pogo stick.

jhautz 02.06.2008 01:05 AM

I was watching the video thinking th same thing. I couldnt figure out if the suspension was to soft or too stiff from the vid, but I certainly could tel it wanst handeling very well.

Great vids by the way! I wish I could get someone to take some vid of my buggy on the track. Everyone is always so busy scrambling around they dont have time or want to bother.

Capito was really smokin in that vid. If the stupid truggy in that race would have quit wiping him out with its size he would have just walked away with the race. Do you know what kind of truggy that was? It looked like it was getting around trhe track pretty nicely, keeping up with the buggys and all.

That's a Jammin X1 CRT. The driver of that truggy is actually a kid named Cade Whittenton who you can see on the drivers stand. I think he's 9 years old (Not positive). He's pretty darn good. You can also see him marshling for my buggy in the other video about 50 seconds in. I'm very impressed wit how he handled the truck getting stuck on mine. Instead of leaving it alone and assuming it would come off he continued running towards the cars regardless of my stupidity attempting to drive off with him on top of me. Good racer and good marshal. Him and his dad (Jon) typically race revos and do very well with them. Definitely fun to race with.
