Bl Mt-2 Ss

I will be getting a HPI MT-2 SS soon and I'll be making it a BL beast. I'm pretty sure I'll sell the nitro junk on eBay or something like that to raise the money to get a BL system. My question is, what motor should I get? I was thinking a Lehner 5300, but I'm not sure it would have the torque to do the job on six cells.

Serum 08.09.2005 01:11 PM

I personally would get a 4200 with 8-10 cells GP2200's. (or lipoly)

(played with the same idea, and figured that would be the motor to be.

Re~Mix 08.09.2005 01:48 PM

I'd also go with the 4200, it'll handle the load better and produce enough power on 6-8 cells. With gp 3700's it already feels like 7 cells to me.

MetalMan 08.09.2005 01:51 PM

How many cells would you run Daniel? If you want sheer power, you could run 12 cells on a Feigao 8L. I realize that this may be overkill, but it would allow for MASSIVE power and speed. The MT2 18SS has a beefed up drivetrain over the MT2 that could probably handle the power.
If you want LONG runtimes on GP3300s, you can go with a Feigao 12s. It will go almost as fast as the 8L, but with much better runtimes (the 12s is what I run in my Rustler on 3s or 4s Lipo).

Serum 08.09.2005 02:10 PM

an 8L on 12 cells is really insane have you seen the weight of that truck metalman? (under 5lbs...)

10 cells is more than enough allready.. 12 on the 8L would make it fly.. (which is good... ;) )

MetalMan 08.09.2005 02:36 PM

I use the 8L in my 1/8 buggy on 3s Lipo. Great power. The temps stay good too. On 4s, the motor gets hot, and the controller does too. I can just imagine a truck as lightweight as the MT2 being pushed by an 8L!

Serum 08.09.2005 03:01 PM

but this one is serious lightweight!

camel_rc 08.09.2005 03:58 PM

Well, I'd like to keep it at 6 cells just because after I buy a BL system, I won't be able to afford new batts for quite a while. I think I'll try my brother's 5300/warrior setup and see how it does with that. I'm thinking the 4200 will be about right as it says it has about the same power as a 12T brushed, so that should be a good mix of torque and speed for my application (track hacking and launching it).

Serum 08.09.2005 04:10 PM

On 6-7 cells i would pick the 5300 and if you want a bit more runtime, get the 4200.. Nice to have a brother who enjoys the same hobby.. I have only got sisters... (who are not interested in technique anyway... ;) )

camel_rc 08.09.2005 04:37 PM

I've got a sister too, but her rusty's been sitting in the same spot for a couple months now :(. I think I might have to go with the 5300 on this one. Now here's another question, BK or MGM? I don't have a ton of money, so I'm leaning towards the MGM. Once I get the truck, I think I'll run a 10x2/super rooster combo just to hold me over until I can buy a BL.

Oh, Metal Man, would you be able to cut out a motor plate for me if I gave you a cardboard mock-up?

Re~Mix 08.09.2005 04:39 PM

Well it all depends on driving style, if you use brakes or like to back off on throttle and not coast, then you need to go with the Lehner.

camel_rc 08.09.2005 05:17 PM

Well, I will be using a y-harness and reverse lock-out so that I can have brakes to make the motor last as long as I can and to keep the temps down. I'm used to brushed and it having a drag brake when you release the throttle and I kinda like that. I think a Fiego 8s/MGM system will be good for me (and my wallet!).

RC-Monster Mike 08.09.2005 05:49 PM

The newer MGM controller have a programming feature to allow "freewheeel" when reducing the throttle. This effect can now be turned on or off. I would go with the MGM controller for the lower cell count applications.
The new MGMs arrive today, and all have a new design with heat sinks and top mounted motor and battery wires(much easier to mount an a car/truck, and capable of harder running with the heatsinks).

Batfish 08.09.2005 05:52 PM

I have used an MGM 12012 and Lehner basic xl4200 in both a XXX-T MF and now my Jato conversion. In both applications on 6-cell 3300/3600 packs and 2s lipo, the combination easily out-performed a 12-turn brushed motor.
My buddy (who owns the local shop and tracks) runs an Orion Revolution 11-turn in his MF2 and BK2. He has told me that my brushless combo in both applications has excessively more power than his 11-turn.
Regardless of what you see on paper and in formulas, there's no replacing real-life experience.

I'm very pleased with my xl4200 / MGM 12012 combo. The only thing I will be changing is to switch to a new MGM 80 amp controller when they are released. I will use the 12012 in my buggy conversion again.

camel_rc - The first gen MGM (the ones I have, at least) do not have a programming option for reverse lockout. However, the controller will not move into reverse without going neutral first. This means that you can go from throttle to brake without reversing. I am using it this way, with the y-harness, in my MGT and Jato. If you let the controller sit in neutral while coasting, then push for brake, the motor will spin in reverse if your vehicle has a one-way in the transmission.

camel_rc 08.09.2005 08:21 PM

Thanks for the replies, guys. I'm not sure if the SS has a one-way or not. Mike, how much will the MGM's go for? Hold onto one for me ;).

Re~Mix 08.09.2005 08:33 PM

Mike, same question also. Do you have any pictures of this new thing either, not that my mgm 80 isn't awesome, but now i need the newest haha.

crazyjr 08.09.2005 10:49 PM

Hey camel, the mt2ss has a slipper clutchand no one-way bearing, unless it has a 2-speed. nice idea, hope it turns out.

camel_rc 08.10.2005 02:33 AM

Nope, not a 2 speed. I should be able to pick up the truck by this weekend and then I'll start building it. Depending on how much time I have to work on it, I might have it ready for the Southern CA URC/LSARC get together on the 20th with a brushed setup.

MetalMan 08.10.2005 07:41 PM

I don't think the MGM controllers have the option to disable reverse/brakes. Or at least the one I had didn't (do the newer ones?). So you are stuck using the motor's power to brake. The BK controllers, on the other hand, can be programmed to run forward only (no reverse/brake). They cost more and also cog more.

RC-Monster Mike 08.10.2005 10:45 PM

I don't believe the MGM controller can be programmed for forward only or even disable reverse. The reverse won't engage until brakes are released and the throttle is returned to neutral, though. The BK controllers don't have bad cogging, either!

MetalMan 08.11.2005 12:59 AM

I found that the BK controllers have worse cogging than the MGM, while the MGM have practically none. This was using an external 6v power source with the BK, and the BEC on the MGM.

El Jarretto 08.11.2005 02:30 AM

The 80A goes for about $165. I think a Feigao 12s would be a good idea, it just seems like it would have planty of torque but it might be hard to fit 12 cells in an MT2. Somebody is doing this on RCZ.

With the factory settings the BK does appear less smooth, but by adjusting the throttle acceleration curve to a similar value as the MGM, there is a noticeable difference. The warrior in stock form comes on too strong to be smooth, but a simple adjustment really smooths out this power delivery.

You got a link for it?

MetalMan 08.11.2005 02:15 PM

I run a Feigao 12s in my Rustler. I don't know if it is me you are talking about (tcolesen) over at RCZ. If it isn't me, then I don't know who it is! 12 cells is what I used to run through the 12s, but now I run 3s and 4s Lipo.

camel_rc 08.11.2005 02:53 PM

So, which one should I get for 6 cell running?

I don't know which one you meant so here. Ooops, the MGM 80A is $185.

MetalMan 08.12.2005 01:25 AM

The Feigao 12s is for 10-12 cells or 3s-4s Lipo. For 6cells, the Feigao 8s will run like like a Lehner 4200, but won't spool up as fast (heavier rotor, but more power). The Feigao 6s has been showed to have no real application, but would still be fast. The Lehner 5300 would be a very good motor. But there is another choice - the Feigao 380 (400) size motors. The 6s (380) would be an excellent motor. It is low cost ($50-60), but will spool up very fast since it is light weight. It will have speed comparable to the Lehner 5300 (faster maybe), but a little less torque. This motor also needs an adapter plate.

I meant the BL MT-2, but oh well.

I'm leaning towards the 5300. It has the torque to get all 4 wheels goin, but has the speed to smoke a nitro MT2.

Good news! I got my paycheck today and I'll be picking up the truck tomorrow!

MetalMan 08.13.2005 03:22 PM

Great! Keep us updated.

camel_rc 08.14.2005 01:16 PM

Got the truck yesterday and started building it. This thing has a ton of hop ups already included!

Serum 08.14.2005 01:19 PM

that's the idea of HPI behind the SS versions.. ;)

Do you like it so far?

Has it got a 6 spider diff?

camel_rc 08.15.2005 12:36 AM

No, there's actually only two BIG spider gears in the diffs.
The entire drivetrain is steel so this thing is going to be STRONG!

Here's some pics:

Ooooo...all those goodies already included!

Finished building it this afternoon:

Notice the lack of engine and fuel tank?

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02260.jpg

That's cause this thing is going brushless!

Plenty of space for the motor, speed control will go in the radio box, but where does the battery go? My only guess right now is make a six/eight cell pack with three/four cells stacked up on top of each other:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v7...2/DSC02261.jpg

Serum 08.15.2005 01:04 AM

hard to tell where to place the batteries.

I need to see one in person to get an idea.

My suggetion is to skip the radiobox.

It hasn't got a one way right? you are still going to use the mechanical brake? you could drop a servo, and save some space by loosing the brake servo..

MetalMan 08.15.2005 03:38 AM

I too would say to remove the radio box. It takes up (valuable?) space and adds weight.
No one-way on here. Removing the mechanical brake and using the motor's brake would be ideal.

crazyjr 08.15.2005 10:48 AM

Hey camel. If you have a radio with an epa setting and a third channel w/mixingyou could set throttle to 0% and third channel 0% foreward and adjust brakes on the servo as needed

Dafni 08.15.2005 02:52 PM

And I would get rid of the mechanical brake. Saves alot of weight, and with such a light truck the BL brake should be enough. Heck, it's also good on a bigger truck. I can flip all my trucks over on grippy surfaces.

True, mech. brakes would remove a bit of stress from the BL, but I think it's not worth the trouble and weight.

BTW, congrats on your new RC! Have fun Camel

camel_rc 08.15.2005 11:58 PM

I would really like to keep the radio tray as well as the disk brake.

Made a motor mount today:

As for battery placement...

Finished painting the body tonight. Decided to do a black/white design with the Pillar bird on the hood:

Can't wait to here and see the final results of this truck. I have an old mt racer that has been begging for a conversion for years! It may end up being turned into a small electric revo, though! Depends on project time this winter!
