Brushless Cooling.

I have recently REVIVED my brushless E-Maxx. I am running a C40 with Hacker controller.

I used to have a computer fan (Thermaltake Smart Fan II 80mm) straped on with zip ties:D but i had an accident or IT had an accident and fliped over, lol, and IT forgot to remind me to put on the body shell on it, so the fan broke.

I have just started running it and the motors are getting too hot ( i used to be able to hold my tounge on it for 3 seconds but now, a mere 2).

I was really hopeing that you guys had better ideas on cooling the brushless and the controller. better fans or placement of fans, heatsinks????

Just out of curiosity has anyone ever run or seen a watercooled brushless, if so, is it practical?

thank you for your consideration,

Mark

I seen a water cooled brushless boat. What temp does your tongue tell it is running. I heard of the finger method never the tongue. That is a new one. If it is not running over 170. You in good shape. 170 is warm to the human touch. Hot water out faucet is about 110-120.

Which C40 is it? I hope it is a "L"...

mark9364 08.15.2005 10:43 PM

how would you check the temperature?
the motor and controller and batteries all get hot.

OHHH my bad its a C50...

You can get a infared temp guage for 25-30 bucks. May not be perfect but is easier than the finger or tongue. Just point and shoot. Bam you have the temp.

:L: Reminds me: ever checked with your tongue if a batt is full??

I like doing the 9v best.

ever tried 7 cell ultra metal 3000's??? ther the best :D

Mark, do you know about Mikes heatsink/clamp? Will this fit your motor? If it is a regular 36mm diameter motor it will fit.
This wonderfull thingy allows you to mount a fan directly to it. 2mm screws just grab nicely inbetween the fins.

As for the ESC, a fan never hurts. I like them directly on the heatsink.

Here's some of my stuff. Most people here have already seen this pics. Anyway, just to give you an idea

I like the dual fan mod for the Warrior. Mine gets pretty hot out here in the AZ heat. Time to look for some micro fans! How did you secure them to the ESC?

Promod 08.16.2005 09:25 PM

I've never heard of using your tongue to check the temp I will let you guys try it first.:D
Dafni, those fans look nice!! Do you put your tongue on them to check the temp.

Thank you,
Promod

No, I keep it in my mouth. Don't like the taste of RC's :L: Plus, I have an IR temp thing.

The fans are haeld to the ESC by 3mm screws. They just fit between the heatsink-fins. (Much in the same way as 2mm screws would fit on Mikes heatsink)

rchippie 08.17.2005 03:53 AM

Hey daf

How well do those 3mm screws hold on the heat sink ?. Have you had any crashes yet ?.

Dafni 08.17.2005 04:35 AM

Crashes?? Yeah, plenty. No issues with the fans.
If you take the proper lenght, they hook up nice. In the shown case, I glued two fans together, and used 3 screws. I can actually pull hard on them. It works fine.

I've alway's had my doubt's about fan's on motor's. I tend to think 1 side is cooled while the other is still hot. Is this true? Or doesn't it matter much? And do those 4 fan's suck up allot of power? I run a 5 volt fan on my hacker comp which keep's it cold but I also want the c-50 cooler and may get 2 fan's for them as well. Right now I use 2 540-can heat sink hold down by ty rip's(don't you just LOVE ty tip's) but I don't know if it really bring's the temp down.
