3905 cheap MM-XL setup - On the right track?

Hi all. I sold all my trucks a while back and have been out of the loop on what's been going on in the brushless world. I'm wanting to build a reliable and inexpensive setup for my new E-Maxx. I was looking at the Novak 6.5, but it seems that that is not my best option for reliability, summer heat tolerance, or torquey performance.

Speed runs aren't a big priority as long as it is faster than stock. I am mostly interested a balance of reliability, good run times, and tire spinning torque. I'm going to be bashing around in the grass in 90F+ summer heat the majority of the time, so motor selection and gearing will be key to keeping the MM happy. After reading for a couple of hours last night, this is what I am looking at:
  • Mamba Max ESC
  • Feigao xl
  • Castle 10Amp BEC
  • 14 Cell nimh

Here's my questions about this setup that I really couldn't find definitive answers for:
  1. Am I on the right track with my selections?
  2. What motor would be best suited to 14 cell use in hot summer temps? A 7,8,or 9xl?
  3. What gearing should I run to keep the heat down to acceptable levels in the 90F+ summer heat when running in grass?
  4. Will it be somewhat faster than stock?
  5. Will it have plenty of torque?
  6. How would the run times be compared to stock?

Some answers below.
  1. Am I on the right track with my selections?

They look good, only issue would be that the mm may not arm with 14 cells.
  2. What motor would be best suited to 14 cell use in hot summer temps? A 7,8,or 9xl?

The 9xl would be your best bet, rpm would be around 30k and it will run the coolest of the 3 motors.
  3. What gearing should I run to keep the heat down to acceptable levels in the 90F+ summer heat when running in grass?

Stock spur and a 22t 32 pitch pinion, you will need a 5mm bore pinion.
  4. Will it be somewhat faster than stock?

Should be at least 8mph faster than stock.
  5. Will it have plenty of torque?

    Oh yes!
  6. How would the run times be compared to stock?

You should have better runtimes, maybe a minute or two. That really depends on the battery quality.

i have a newer mm and i installed the new firmware and it handled 14 cells with no problem, just thought i threw that in,im running a 8xl and its great, gets hot though:tongue:

If I'm not mistaken, the MM wont arm if you program the cutoff for a voltage over a standard 4S cutoff, but you can put as much as 6S into it if you use an external cutoff or do GriffenRU's cutoff "trick."

yea shouldnt have a problem running 4s on ur mm and i think lincpimp gave u the best setup cause i tried 7-8xl and they both get hot so the 9xl would be ur best bet and if u get a 22t pinion and change the spur to a 62 u should be in the low 40s.

i just picked up two 2s 8000mah packs to run it to see wat it would do top speed wise. so i run the 7xl with 22/62 and it did 50mph but after 10min i had a problem long story short i need a new motor so a 7xl wont cut it save the money get a 9xl unless after about 10mins u want to buy another one LOL

Thanks for all the info. Maybe I should just hang loose and save my money for a month or two. With any luck, the ever illusive MMM will be released by then. :sarcastic:
