problem with mamba max shuting off in middle of run
 

Alright i bought a used mamba max 7700 on ebay and ran it in my old t2 for a while on 8 realy old cheap 3000mah cells. It ran pretty good(considering the batts) Just recently i bought a new emaxx(planning on going brushless. So i sold the "waterproof" esc on ebay. i put in the mamba and am just running the twin titans in parallel. and 12 old 3300 cells. and a reciever pack(yes i desabled the internal bec) Okay. But heres the problem. When i plug everything in it arms everything seems to work runs like stink. and then a few min. later. It just shutsdown. If i didnt know better i would think its thermaling. But the heatsink doesnt even get warm. the motors dontget warm heck the batts dont even get a chance to get warm.(its in the mid 40s here) Anyone know whats going on. the next day ill plug everything in and it will work. I dont have a prob. sending this in if its broken. (Idont want to wait 2-3 weeks but i will if i need to) I Want to get a 9xl but i dont want to get it only to keep having this prob. Plus i would like to run 14 cells. and i have read that the new esc's that castle sends out(for repairs) wont run them. So what should i do?:neutral:

Do you by any chance have the LVC set? Obviously, with NiMH batts, you don't need a lipo cutoff...

No no low voltage set. I just updated the firmware yesterday. Turned the brake down. Flipping on its lid. when you tap the brakes is no fun. I ran a jato and a .26max revo for a few years. But i love this instant torque.
Thanks for the welcome. i have been reading the forums for a few weeks. now but only now have a needed or had anything to share.

Sorry I cant really help, but I understand your frustration. I had two Mini LST2's that exhibited this exact behavior. I even put one of the ESC's in a mini-t and it was the same. Losi didn't want to hear about it or help at all. In complete stock form it was like they were thermalling, but nothing got even close to warm. When I contacted losi they said "it sounds like it's thermalling, dont load it up, just be gentle with the throttle". Heh, what fun is that. Never heard from them again.

Castle are much better though, and have possibly best customer service I've ever experienced. Email them from their website and you should get a helpful response, at least they will be willing to discuss it or talk about it more than stupid losi were :(

Have you tried running in High power brushed mode? It may help.. you loose reverse though.

My mate had the same problem with his mlst2 but they replaced his esc.

yea im gonna try that. I do love having reverse though. I have this fantasy hope that if i just buy a fiegao 9xl, it will fix it. :whistle:

well that didnt work when i changed it to high powered brushless. It wouldnt even spin the motors. It would arm but it wouldnt send tones to the motor. I even recalibrated. And by looking at the lights i could see it calibrated fine but it wouldnt recognize the motors. Switched it back to regular brushed with reverse and it worked great for about 5 min. and then capoot. i did notice when it shuts down The led goes to a real dim solid yellow light. So i dont know.

Did you rewire for high powered brushed mode? My understanding was you needed to wire up the motor differently in that mode.

Wow and your an Aussie too! I thought they only cared about their main customer base in the states :sarcastic: Well I'm never buying Losi again now anyway, not that it matters to them. So far its HPI and Losi that don't see to give a sh!t about their customers...

I use a pair of female Deans connectors for the esc motor wires. I put the red and black motor wires on one connector (female deans #1), the white and a jumper from battery positive to the other connector (female deans #2).

This way I can run a brushless motor (two male deans, red, black, and white wires used. Batt positive capped off),

or brushed w/ reverse (one male deans connected to red and black #1),

or high powered brushed (two male deans used #1 & #2, red, black, and white spliced togeather on the motor side, and the batt positive).

One set of connectors (4 wires) on the ESC and whatever configuration I need on the motor side...


The MM could thermal the 6 fet's it uses for brushed w/reverse without seeming too hot at the heat sink. There are 12 fets in the circuit, 6 on each leg (leg #1= positive wire, leg #2= negative wire) 3 fets are active on each leg during opperation, of the 6 fets on each leg 3 are positive switching and 3 are negative switching. When the motor spins the esc is providing positive to one wire and negative to the other.

When you use high power brushed it uses 18 fets at once, on one leg of the motor wires, the other leg is straight to battery positive. Three times less of a chance of a thermal shutdown.

i called caste and i ended up speaking with the tech for over 45 min. He was a super nice guy. and he basical said the same thing. We also talked for prob 30 min about the monster max(he said it will be out in april) He said they have all the motors there just waitng on mother boards. He mentioned. that they super nice motors and ARE hand wound. If anyone has a chance to call tech support. around 7-8am pst. do it that guy is great to talk to.
And now that im convident the esc is not bad, i just order a 9xl. :-)
anyone know around what pinion i should run?(i know i need 5mm shaft pinion)
