How / Where do you store your lipos?
 

I did a few searches but couldn't find the info I was looking for.

I'm starting to build a decent collection of lipos (11 lipos and 2 a123), and I need to figure out a safe way to store them. I can't really afford a $30 lipo sack for each one.

What have you guys figured out for this? Pics will help if you have them.

Lipo sack for charging - 2 X $20-30 fire proof document safes for storage - I figure if it keeps it out it should be ok at keeping it in!

A lot of folks have been using Ammo Boxes. They're super cheap on eBay.

hey looking for help how do you guys store them as far as the charge you leave in them is it ok to leave them fully charged??? if not how do you know how much charge is left in the pack thanks

I've seen guys charge their lipos in an upside down old-school flower pot (ceramic of course), but regular storage should be okay anywhere??

I never even thought to use an Ammo box. I'm pretty sure I have an extra one around here somewhere.

So, you need to be careful while charging, but once they're charged are they pretty much harmless while just sitting there? Meaning I could leave them on a shelf and not worry about burning the house down?

I also store mine in an ammo box. Works fine.

I store mine in a document firesafe like Arktic. I had it sitting here aready so I just used it. I dont really worry about them when they are just sitting around, but I figure I cant hurt to have the extra measure of safty.

I've been working on some new lipo bags... cheaper and imo better than a lipo-sack.

My main product is a single-pack size. The reason is that I don't want a whole bag/box full of $$ lipos to go up in smoke because of one cell going nuclear. If one goes... who knows how many other packs might survive?

Oh, and these will likely only be $5-10 each.... depending on size, etc. The idea now is about $20 for a 3 pk of standard 1/10-car-pack size bags.

The current design is a rather rigid fireproof material liner with a ballistic nylon outer layer and a velcro flap closure.

As long as they are not rigid boxes I think that is a great idea. I like the lipo sack cuz it folds or rolls up or lies flat when not in use and doesnt take much space. Rigid containers would be less than ideal IMO.

Pfft I think lipo explosions are way over rated. I just chuck em in the spares box with everything else. Sometimes I leave them in the car unplugged. I've never had a decent quality cell explode and burn down or destroy my house, car, life, or anything in it. I've never even had one fail in any way. Just keep them balanced, dont over charge or over discharge, and don't short them. Same rules for any battery.

Sure I've had cheap chinese made (5 for $10) lipo cells swell up when I give them a hard time, but that is why they in those non rigid bags. they're made especially to expand. I think the bad explosion problem was when they were in rigid steel cases, so when the vent you get enormous pressure build up before the vessel fails. With the soft cases you can see when it starts venting, check it in some salt water over night to safetly disable the battery then dispose of it thoughtfully.

Sorry... I just meant the fabric is kinda stiff. It still folds flat. But really... the idea is that you keep the battery in it all the time unless it's being run. It makes a really nice little storage system.

Btw, I also have a cool "hardcase" one too. It's a plastic case like an old-school nimh carry case. I'm not happy with it quite yet but it's getting there. The material for that one is rated @ 3000*F and it will hold like 4 packs and have some isolation between them :yes:

That would be a much better deal than the $20-30 bags on the market now.

I couldn't agree with you any more, I have NEVER had a problem with any Lipo when I used I followed instructions, I had a 3 cell 1800ma for a RC18 that I accidently left connected to the ESC and it swelled a little and I never ran again, it was a Hyperion brand, I would never buy a cheap lipo, the cheapest I have ever bought is a True Rc and it works fine
