Looking for e-maxx build input...
I bought a used emaxx off ebay many moons ago that I enjoyed until I smoked the ESC after bashing in the snow (couldn't resist). Instead of replacing it, I am looking to go brushless and would like to be able to run LiPo and NiMH (no, not at the same time ;). In making this move, I understand that I need to beef up certain components to handle the power. This is what I have to work with:
I am leaning towards going to a single speed transmission and getting a new radio. What other driveline components do I need to upgrade? What are the other weak spots on the EMaxx? What are the most common motor/ESC combinations? Can someone help me with identifying the parts so that I can put a sticker price on this? TIA, -- Marc |
Single speed won't improve robustness but a steel idler is essential....
Does this have the revo dogbones? If not that and the knuckles would be where I'd start. Have you looked at the diff's to see if they have been enhanced with Ali diff cups? Rear would be the first place to change. |
No, the differentials are stock, as is the rest. So, I'm looking at:
That puts the project around the $400 mark without batteries. I wonder if I'm better off buying a Rustler VXL for roughly same price. Not quite the same truck, but still fun. Problem is, I'd be stuck with my non-working upgraded e-maxx that does not run - couldn't get $175 for it off eBay when I tried to unload it. How much do typical brushless emaxx owners have invested? -- Marc |
Too much generally speaking- I am at $3000 or so but my truck is 99% aftermarket parts.
I would say the Ruslter VXL is a fine vehicle with a bullet proof driveline as standard, so you would probably be better off with one of those, plus they are cheaper to repair when things break. As for the emaxx, my advice is to part it out; chassis, bulks, bumpers, tranny, diffs- put them all as individual auctions and you will easily get about $150-$200 back in total. |
Thanks for the input.
With my primary rc hobby being heli's, I'm going to take your advice and put the Emaxx on ebay and move to a more simple setup. You've built yourself one sweet truck! I enjoyed reading your thread. Regards, -- Marc |
