Suggestions for brushless Jato...
Well now that the Revo is 99% done, I've decided to convert the jato.
I bought a buddy's Jato that had less than 1/4 gallon through it. He's replaced about everything on it with upgrades and with all that, ez start, extra wheels and tires and absolutely flawless condition, I only paid 200 bucks. I pulled the engine with ezstart motor and pipe and put it on ebay. Right now it's at 113.00 bucks with 6 days left. Hell, I'll almost have the Jato paid for...lol. Anyway, sorry, got distracted, I installed a RC Monster motor mount I pulled from the Revo. It was flexing and I don't think it'll flex so much with a lesser motor and battery. So, what size motor and which controller would you suggest? I want to run a 3S battery (5000mah). I was actually thinking of getting a VXL motor out of a Rustler or Stampede. The VXL's I have now simply fly... Do you think that would be enough? Thanks in advance for everyone's suggestions. Mark |
There is a Jato Forum area in the main Forum menu. You might look there for more info. Most peoples opinions, mine included, is to sell the Jato and buy a 4 wheel drive setup. maybe the CRT .5. They are selling for about the same as the Jato on Ebay. But so times you just want to build something. I did with the Jato. I would shoot for a motor with about 3200kv or around there. Plenty of speed and torque. I only run MM's so far and they are a good solid cheap ESC. My set up was Lehner 1920\7 with a MM on 3s2p 8000 mAh lipos. It was nice but way to fast to control. At about 53 mph the front end was so light it would lift off the ground. No control with only 2 wheels on the ground. Just my 2 cents.

Anyway, thanks for the opinion and correct forum section. Mark |
Would a mod mind moving this thread to the Jato section please?
Thanks. Mark |

Yeah, the way the front end is shaped does make it easy to flip, but if you try to put the batteries towards the front (or center) it helps with the lifting. If high speed is what you're after, I'm sure a front spoiler can be easily be made with Lexan/plastic/Al sheet/etc and mounted somehow.
The problem I had with mine is getting the rear wheels to hook up, especially on dirt. Most (if not all) ST have the motor behind the rear wheels so it helps traction. Are you going with the single speed or keep the two speed? Just like the Revo, you'll need mech brakes (and won't have reverse) if using the 2 speed. What's nice about the Jato is the availability of the single speed, which eliminates the need to find a way to lock it into second gear. Good luck! Oh, and pics are mandatory! |
If the Jato has such a hard time keeping the front end down, then how do the nitro ones do it with an advertised speed of 65 MPH?

You got man, you hit the nail on the head with that... too much air getting underneath. I know this because when I had the Rustler as a Stampede, it was ridiculously fast but air kept getting underneath it. I converted it to a full Rustler but left the height at it's highest and it was better. I lowered it and it was even better. Aerodynamics make a big difference even on a small rc car.. What do you mean "availability of the single speed"? Is there a trans I can get that I don't have to lock it into second gear? That's what I was going to do... the same mod you showed us for the Revo. Quote:
I don't doubt it's possible but I think it has to be under ideal conditions... long track, slow squeeze, etc, etc... Like I said, I got it to 52 and had plenty of throttle left.... I just needed more room and I'm sure I could have squeezed way more out of it. Mark |

Yeah, there is a single speed conversion available. The ratio is just about halfway between the original first and second gear (the ratio is included in the speed calc). It eliminates the OWB/first gear and the centrifugal clutch, so basically does the same thing as when modding the Revo tranny. Of course, you can mod the tranny in a similar fashion, but much easier to get what's already out there...
BTW: I did a Jato as well, here's the thread: http://rc-monster.com/forum/showthre...hlight=project Started as just an on-road project, but I got sidetracked. |
Brian,
I bought a 5700 Mamba max and controller today. I ordered a 5mm 1.0 pitch pinion gear with 3.2 adapter from Mike today because I want to use a revo spur gear. I'm ready to get this going... |
