3s Lipo enough for 10L?
I just got a feigao 10L to replace my old C50 Maxx. I'm still using the Hacker Master Comp controller with 4s 6000 lipos but it keeps getting too hot and shuts down.
I managed to get motor and battery temps reasonable by gearing 16/51 in my sorta heavy Supermaxx with 40 series tires/wheels, but the controller shut down after 5 minutes with 158f at the heatsinks. Motor was about the same. Truck was incredibly fast though!! At 14/51 the truck did run longer, but the motor temps were up around 180f. I've been playing with the timing, but don't know how that will effect the controller? Stock for Hacker motor is 2-5 degrees timing -- I can't remember the frequency -- it was low though. Setting it to 18 degrees and the next higher frequency seemed to really wake it up, but the esc got hot quicker. Does changing the timing/frequency put more/less load on the esc or just the motor? Since motor temps seem to be in line I'm thinking that maybe I'm just running too many volts through the master comp? It's designed for 10-12 cell nimhs, so I was thinking a 3s lipo would give me enough juice but be cool enough not to cook the esc? Nimhs are just too heavy and not enough runtime... I know people run more cells though, how do you do it? |
It will run..
If you just change the gearing a bit.. A good 3S lipoly pack is able to deliver about 6-700 watts.. and the 10L is also capable of getting that power from the lipoly.. That is enough to push a lightweight truck.. But on a full aluminum maxx, 3S is a bit too less powerfull if you ask me.. |
Yeah, that's what I was thinking -- not enough for a heavy truck. I tried 7.4v 2s lipo and that was almost fun, but way too slow.
So what could I try to keep esc temps down? Lower gears don't seem to be the answer, lighter tires? |
get a 7XL.....! (or at least try one...)
did you tried a fan on your esc? can make a difference of 12 thermals during a run vs. 0 shutdowns... |
No I haven't. Would it work to wire it to the third channel on my receiver for power since I don't use third channel servo?
|
Yes, that would work like a charm.. be sure to get a 6V fan..
|
I use 5V fans. This is what my supplier carries. Works well with a resistor. Fans don't mind a little bit of over voltage.
btw, another vote for the 7XL from me! ;) |
A 7XL will draw less amps than a 10L? Or would it just work better on fewer cells?
|
If you run 4s Lipo, instead of 3s Lipo and adjust the gearing down to the same speed you are getting with the 3s, your equipment will run cooler. A fan is certainly a great idea(for motor AND controller would be the best), and can indeed be wired to the third channel (I do this myself).
Welcome to the forums as well, my friend. |
I run a 12v 80mm DC computer fan directly off my batteries (16.8v). My fan is rated 31cfm@12v, .14I. This may be overkill but I don't have any issues w/ run length and heat even when its 100f out.
