Rustler on 9s lipo

Here is my next fill-in project. I like to have easy to finish projects to fill my time when I am bored with the bigger ones.

So I have a rustler, with all rpm parts, and a vxl internal, stock cased tranny. Plan to run jato anaconda rears all the way around (I already ave them) I will do the hpi rush front arm swap, to get equal track width front and rear.

Power will be 3 maxamps 2100 3s 20c packs in series, thru a kontronik 30-10-32. Supposedly the esc is good to 43v, and has a car mode. Motor will be an aveox 36/3/24. It is a 1300kv motor that is about halfway between a s and l can motor in size.

Gearing will be 18/54 to start. That should be good for about 60. I can swap to mod 1 gears and go as far as 25/36. That (125mph) may be a bit much though...

I will start with as many stock parts as possible. The chassis will be modded to accomodate the 3 packs. Not sure if the stock tranny case will be any good. I do have the upgraded bearing carriers, and a dogbone type drive setup.

Any ideas, or thoughts about this?

If you go much above 70mph I don't think the cells will like the current too much. I don't think there will be any major problems with the transmission holding up, since I only had bad luck with the older black plastic tranny case and plastic diff gears.

How about FLM extended front arms? They're a nice fit, and shouldn't have any problems (mine haven't).

That is going to be so wicked!!

I wouldn't use anacondas, but that is just a personal choice.

I have the rush arms, and want to try them out. I have done a few different arms mods to pedes and rustlers, and this looks to be the best.

Snellemin, what tires would you suggest? I would like to have something between 3.8 and 4 inches tall.

There is no way you will keep the front end on the ground!!!! That thing will scream. I bough a rustler from a guy and he put a bandit top on it. I tried 4s2p just to see what would happen. Its out of control after 55 mph. No stearing what so ever. Good luck and post a vid!!!

What do you do to keep the driveshafts from breaking?

I have metal u joints and plastic sliders and they hold up, I think the biggest thing to keeping driveshafts intact is driving style. If it swaps ends let off the throttle. If its rolling backwards WAIT for it to stop. Ballsout driving is fun but destructive. If I don't follow these rules I can snap shafts no problem but with a little restraint I can run all day and still have a blast.

I have kept my VXL Rustler stock as much as possible, the only non drive train upgrade has been RPM casterblocks, but right now it is powerful enough ,any more and it would be too out of control, and I do enjoy "out of control"..... I just have to have a more subtle trigger finger from a stop, and all my repairs have been front end related. I have been running these Ofna 1/8 scale hard foam wheel/tire combo, they don't ballon but if there is a significant amount of dirt/dust on the road it will lose traction.

yea i dont think the rustler can handle anymore power really, it already wheelies nonstop at 50, and the stock drivtrain holds up really well, ive beat the snot out of mine, and only broke stuff with front end collisions, this things a tank!

3S 8000mAh 20C = 1776 Watts, roughly... 75MPH..
9S 2100mAh 20C = 1400 watts... still should be enough to pass 70MPH... but Traxxas recommends 1700 Watts for 70MPH+..

lincpimp 03.21.2008 01:00 PM

Thanks aqwut, hoping my setup may be slightly more effecient than the vxl system. I do not think that will be an issue. I have a feeling that 70 mph will be plenty.

Go for it. Keep us informed and make a video .

lincpimp 03.21.2008 02:46 PM

I will keep you guys informed.

And I will see what I can do about a video.

I originally had 3 cell 8000mah pack and I Definately was NOT going 70 mph with my Rustler, Traxxas likes to inflate thier specs, but when I had the heavier 8000 pack the driveabilty was better
