Neu finned vs smooth temps?

Hi guys. I'd appreciate any advice/opinions on the heat dissipation advantage of a finned neu motor (such as 1515 1y) over the smooth can. Specifically is the advantage great enough to override the gearing limitations when used in a 3905 e-maxx. I also read on another post that the mounting holes on the smooth cans are not "standard" as they are on the finned version. Is that true?

Mounting holes are the same. I have no idea on the temps though. Many others here say that they make very little difference. I am trying to decide between a smooth can or finned can myself, so I would like to hear from others if the heat is more with smooth can. I have one finned can that runs real cool. I may just get a finned can (looks cooler, lol) and grind down the fins for clearance with smaller gears.

Fins will aid cooling, no way to dispute that. How much it will help will be hard to say unless someone has the finned/smooth versions of the same motor, ran both, and took temps after the same length/type of run. Seeing as how Neus are quite efficient, I think they'll stay fairly cool no matter which version you get - assuming of course you are gearing properly and have a properly sized motor to begin with.

It's not that you need a finned version to keep the temps within range, like with the feigao's.

The Finned versions are larger (diameter) and weigh a bit more. I'd like to know if the heat reduction is worth more than the larger size/weight.

I realize no one is likely able to give us real numbers but how about an idea? Does the finned version stay 2 degrees cooler or 20 degrees? Is it likely to be a big number or a small number?

Keep in mind that you can always put a clip on heatsink on the smooth can, and from my experience with aveox motors (very similar to the neu smooth can) the clip on heat sink can pull the motor temp down about 10 deg or more depending on air flow.

That would help with gearing issues with the larger diameter finned neu, as the clip on heatsinks can be placed anywhere on the can radially. I am sure that the clip on is not as good as the built in fins, but the neu is very effecient to start with, unlike a feigao, where the c motors with the built in heatsink do keep cooler.

Thanks for all the input guys. I went ahead and ordered the 1515 1y smooth from rc-monster.

I was told by Steve Neu the finned can typicaly runs 15 degrees cooler

I'd bet he was probably talking about in a airplane setup.

But, yes there is no disputing the fins will dissipate more heat than a smooth can. But in most properly set up applications in cars I have rarely hear of many complaining that their Neu motor is running to hot if there want some other problem causing it. I personally don't think the fins are needed, but I guess than can be nice insurance.
