ESC Blues

Hey guys, need some advice. My last truggy was stolen, so I threw a Jammin truggy together to get me by until I get a new design worked out. It has a Neu 1515 2.5d, and a MM speedo with some caps thrown on to help manage the 5s I run. I gave the MM a try cause I am tired of frying Quarks even though they were awesome when they ran, and the MMM or Tekin R/8 are not out yet.

Well, the thing won't make it a foot with a ful battery charge. It runs on a pack that is slightly drained. It also coggs, and the ESC was burning hot within 1 minute and it's about 65F outside. Any suggestions on the timing and all the other settings available to make this thing work on 5s? All my packs are 5s so 4s is a no-go. Gearing is proper. Thx

I have a MM with a full 5s pack problem like that. It runs on 5s well except for if the pack is totally topped off. I actually found that my solution was to set my charger to 4.15v/cell rather than 4.2v and it works with no issue. If I have a fully charged pack I just hold the truggy in the air and let then motor run for a minute or so. Somtimes it take shutting the MM switch off and on again and running it untill it quits, then doing it again untill it stays running. Kind of a pain, but then it runs fine after the peak is taken off the pack. Its wierd, I have 3 MMs running 5s and only one of them is that way. The other 2 run 5s fine with no problems.

That was the only solution I found. If you find another solution let me know Id love to find it also.

Mine doesnt have any cogging or heat issues like yours though.

I believe it is the latest firmware, 1.9 or something like that. It's got all these settings like "starting power", "punch control", and "Motor timing" I hadn't had to deal with that with the Quarks. Have no clue how to best set these for the Neu.

I'll post a pic when she's worth photographing. Right now she's just thrown together to confirm all is well.

Blues? I can't beleive your calling it esc blues when the MM is a 3s esc! I'll be running one on 4s as my CC BEC and new pinion arrive but I see that most everyone is pushing it to 4s without problems. Now don't take this to serious I just wanted to remind everyone that we expect way to much out of our r/c cars and we def. expect a lot from CC. If the MMM is supposed to be 6s capable and warrantied what are we gonna try pushing that too? It's doubling the capacity of the MM so will we run 8s on it? 29.6V E-maxx and Revos would be crazy! I want a MMM so I can safely run 4s and have no problems but I'd also like to eventually do a eight-t bl conversion and I think thats going to require a bit more than I want to run on a MM. Point of all this....Be happy that your esc is working at all on 5s! My Novak HV-Maxx esc isn't working at all! Thats why I'm going MM/8xl/CC BEC

Burning hot within 1 min?... you are using a UBEC aren't you?

It sounds to me like there must be a short somewhere, or a problem with the motor. Check that the endbells are properly seated, and no binding in the bearings ?

LMAO Yeah!

Anyways. Check all your connections, using a ubec. You may also want to try and redownload the software update? With something like this, it could be a variety of things. What I usually do is start from scratch. I even unsoldered everything and soldered it all back up and prob went away, so that told me there was a cold connection somewhere.

Any chance this is a used (damaged) esc? I did a mod on a MM once and acidentally shorted one leg of thew fets (had a few move and didn't catch it :(, didn't kill the ESC before I found the problem but acted just like you are describing (cogging & excessive heat). Propably just the overvoltage thing but if draining the pack a bit does not help...

Guys, feeling a bit dumb and may have prematurely posted. :oops:I updated the Castlelink software which THEN revealed a more recent firmware update and I loaded it. Cogging reduced to very brief pulse while it seeks the motor position. Still not nearly as good as a Quark but may be manageable. I am using a BEC. The thing gets hot, no doubt about it. It was a new ESC. My last CRT was designed for the chassis to heat sink everthing and nothing ever exceeded 35F over ambient so perhaps this heat is normal. I don't like normal though and will add a fan and/or mod the heat sink. Why oh why has it taken so long for a real 1/8th controller? Thanks for all those who gave feedback.
