SkyVolt Has Arrived

Just what I've been waiting for...
I just checked FMA's website and they finally posted info on the Kokam High discharge SkyVolt Lipo packs.

You can see them here:SkyVolt

Thanks for the heads up! I've been waiting for these too.Wasn't expecting them for another couple of weeks.

Holy cow those batteries are expensive!?! $255 just for 4s 3200mah... I would never be able to justify a price like that...

starscream 09.08.2005 12:01 AM

Those are suggested retail price which are always a bit inflated. I guess I better start saving up if I'm gonna get some

I would wait till they a lil cheaper. THose prices wont stay that high forever.

The 6400Mah 2p2s skyvolt packs are comparable in price to the Scorpion and Balance Pro packs, with none of the built in benefits. The charger is abot $45 .00 more than the Scorpion charger.

The product description says, "To charge Skyvolt Packs, disconnect packs from the Module and charge them individually using the Skyvolt 6S Charger". I looked for a manual on the FMA site. Not published there as of today. I was under the impression that these packs offered the same safety and convenience as the Scorpion packs, but at higher capacities. They require seperate charge protection and discharge protection modules, about $60.00 a throw.

Other than voltage availabilty to 22.2v and up to 9600Mah, the biggest benefit is the ability to fast charge. Wow, 22.2v and 9600Mah in twenty minutes, safely. Cha-Ching!

MetalMan 09.08.2005 08:38 AM

That would require a MASSIVE power supply! That would mean that you need a power supply capable of 57amps at 12 volts! (factoring in charger efficiency). And on top of that, you need some good wire/connectors!

As other would say, "In the name of science.":L:

The SkyVolt packs are the same technology as the BalancePro packs, with more cells in series. The charger balances the cells during charging and can charge at up to 10A. You need a low-voltage cutoff device (ESC or external device) to protect against over-discharging for both.
Their charge protection module lets you use your own lipo charger to charge the SkyVolt (this is different from BalancePro, since BalancePro requires the BalancePro charger) as well as the SkyVolt-specific charger. The charge protection module will cut off the charge when any cell in the pack reaches 4.2v while charging.
Their discharge protection module is a low-voltage cutoff device made to work with the SkyVolt packs.

Unfortunately, you can't charge any of the 6400 or 9600 packs to 90% in 20 minutes due to the limits of the charger. You have to set the charger to 3C for the 20-minute claim, but it only goes to 10A. You'd need 19A and 28A (approx) for the larger capacity packs to charge in 20 minutes. Either way, it's still nice to charge my BalancePro 2s2p 6400 at 10A. :)

Lastly, the prices on FMA's website aren't suggested retail price; they are actual retail price when purchased from FMA Direct. For example, the 2s2p 6400 BalancePro packs I have cost $285.95 if purchased at FMA Direct, but cost only $199.99 if purchased at Tower. With this in mind, I don't know why anyone would purchase from FMA Direct, but it IS their actual retail price :)

You see now why I am not a moderator.:L:

Hey guys, if I want to get myself a decent lithium polymer batt and a good charger, what brand do you recommend me to buy? I think that thunderpower produces some good lipos, but what about the chargers? is it okay to use the ones that Astroflight makes or do you have other manufacturers that you would want to recommend me to take from beside those that I mentioned?

Serum 09.08.2005 12:43 PM

What about the ones in this thread?

The thunderpower ballancers seem to be pretty good though.. I just bought a 10S lipoly charger, capable of 150watts charge power. (10S with about 4A) i don't know what to expect from it yet..

The prices on the batteries didn't scared me off either.. It's an advice.. Normally (with washing machines etc) you van divide the advise price with 2... Towers is rather cheap with the Kokam/FMA's..

though a prive tag of 550 dollars, and up for one charge makes me wonder if i'll be able to sleep in the same bed with my lovely girl..

Looking for the golden excuse..

Gustav 09.08.2005 03:00 PM

Batfish, unfortunately there is one reason to buy from FMA direct and that looks like what i may have to do.
Tower won't ship lipoly via air and FMA will ship internationally.

If anyone knows another FMA dealer that will ship lipoly via air then please share.

The total from FMA comes to over $800 for my order and i still have to add shipping and tax and import duty.could be up to 50% on top.So, if your in europe they really are expensive!

Serum 09.08.2005 03:05 PM

What about rc-monster Mike??

;)

Gustav 09.08.2005 03:09 PM

I'll certainly ask the question.
I just assumed Mike didn't sell FMA since others seem to buy them else where.
