Anyone ever dent their lipo's???
I dented one of mine off a nasty jump the other day, I didnt even realize it until two cycles later. Anyways the zippy-R 4s 4500mah still works good even though its dented. Should I expect any problems from this battery in the future? ( The battery doesnt seem like its puffed at all. )
I had the battery totally wrapped in my battery tray with 1/4" foam rubber, I just ordered some 1/2" foam rubber to give it more protection. Anyone ever dent their lipo, what was the result??? |
I think that may depend on the size of the dent. I would suggest monitoring lipos constantly anyway. I think if it is not puffed now after 2 cycles with the dent then it probably will be fine. If it does turn out to be a problem you can always take the dented cell off and run it with one less cell. I have had many many maxamps packs and i would get puffed cells and just make new ones out of the remaining good cells. Out of 2 2s and 1 3s i am left with 1 4s. So out of 7s i have 4s left. But i will say once i sorted out the bad cells the 4s has been running good ever since. Oh and if some says you don't need to balance well i am here to say you do. I trashed a nice thunder power 3s because it was not balanced, i know balance every time.

I have dented a few and I watched them carefully, but after a couple days I charged them up and they are running good still. I heard of guy who bent lipos a little and they still work perfectly. The big problem would be if the pack has a puncture.

about balancing your lipos, just think of not balancing new tire on a car, it will work for a while, but evantually wear and take out other components, balancing is so effortless, its worth it to do every time

I've dented a smaller lipo and as long as its not "accordioned" with a number or so really small, sharp folds, I think you're fine. Denting one really bad you'll see some loss cause that area doesn't seem to contribute to the amp flow anymore. I got pretty much normal life out of my dented one compared to others. I did same thing you're doing - more protection.
About a week later was running around climbing a debris pile (construction site) and managed to puncture one - I was lucky, I was standing right there and ripped shell off and tossed batt soon as I saw smoke. Would have melted chassis otherwise. Also got me a visit from site security guard due to all the smoke. Fortunately he had a sense of humor and we had a good laugh. |
I use my batteries as a bumper on my rock crawlers. They usually make a nice wedge to get up and over rocks. :D
