Plett Powered Hyper 7 TQ Sport Project
I'm in the middle of building my Plettenberg powered Hyper 7 TQ Sport, and I have a few questions.
1) I'm considering using the Ofna Dominator Center Slipper Drive instead of the differential that came with the kit, mainly because I can use a plastic gear instead of the hardened steel spur gear. What is the downside to not using the center diff? 2) I'm getting the Plett BigMAXXimum and would like to know which controller to get? Should I get the Schulze 18.97kw? I'm planning on using 16 cell Intellect 3800 packs. 3) If I use the 51T plastic spur gear, which pinion should I use? 1. Dabid (member on the forums here) does/did (not sure which!) run the Dominator center slipper. He said that it didn't really slip at all. Not having a center diff will make your turning into the corners suffer a little. BUT, for electric, a slipper clutch is a good investment. I made a custom one for my 1/8 buggy using Revo slipper components. It slips, and is adjustable. Also, I can use Monster GT spur gears on it.
2. The BigMaxximum will require at minimum the Schulze 18.97. This setup will run you about $650. If you want something with similar power for cheaper, then go with a Feigao 7XL and a Warrior 9920. This setup only costs $290. It is just as powerful as the BigMaxximum, but less than half the price! And then you wouldn't have to worry about a $350 controller going up in smoke (the 18.97). 3. The pinion you use depends on the cell count. 12 cells (or 4s Lipo) is usually standard for 1/8 buggies, and so a 13-14t pinion should work. |
I am not sure on the mgm contoller if it supports the 4 pole motor. The schulze does. To me the big maxx is a little pricey for performance. Not downing the motor or nothing. Just opinion. good luck on project. Post some pics as it comes along.

you can also use the 9920 as long as the bigmaxx doesnt exceed 50,000 rpms.

I used to own a Plett MAXXimum and a Schulze 18.97 and used them on my Revo with no problems (Knock on wood ;) ). I agree that they are very expensive, but I really like the look and performance of the Plett and the fact that it has a built-in heatsink and fan! But, as far as the Schulze is concerned, I wish that they weren't so strict on the battery wire length, battery pack cell configuration and connector selection. I was told that a MGM controller would work with the Plett, but I wonder what their quality and customer service is like, compared to Schulze?

If it works with you stick with it. I have a schulze my self. I kind of like the controller. I have heard bad things on them. So far so good. Good luck with project.

Well, I received my BigMAXXimum (along with a ton of other parts:D ) and started the design of the custom motor mount. I'm using a center slipper clutch spur from an Ofna Dominator, so that I can use a plastic spur gear and have some geartrain protection. I'm going to use the 65T Mod 1 Spur Gear and would like to know what size pinion gear to use? I want a balance between low and top speed, and want to keep the temp of the motor and speed control to a minimum.
Also, I would like to know what Polyquest LiPoly to use with the Schulze 18.97 and the Pletty? Should I use a 4S or 5S and what capacity? By using LiPolys, am I running a risk of damaging the speed control because of the amount of current that the LiPolys can deliver? Comments and suggestions are welcome! :) |
Where are you guys getting the dominator plastic spur gears. I recently purchased a hyper 7 gear diff adaptor which will allow me to use the Dominator Steel 62T gear, but I would much rather use plastic gear?

The Dominator slipper clutch system is not a direct drop-in. I am having a "doubler" plate made so that I can drill new holes to mount the "complete" slipper clutch system. Then the doubler plate will be mounted on top of the Hyper 7 chassis. The "complete" system includes the plastic mounts, aluminum spacers and standoffs for the Dominator. All of the parts are available at Tower Hobbies. Part numbers: 18011, 18012, 18161 and 18987. The 65T plastic spur gear is: 18163 65T Spur Gear I will post pics when the doubler plate and motor mount are finished. |
Project Resurrected!
Well, I had to take a temporary break from my project, but it has been resurrected and is back in full motion! With any luck, my machinist will be done with the custom motor and transmission mount soon. And, all of the remaining parts are on order, as well. I hope to have the project completed by the end of next week. I will post pics when it is done.

Well, the project is complete! I just got done with the first test run and it far exceeded my expectations! The power from the BigMaxximum is incredible! I'm using 16 cell Intellect 3800 packs, and they kick out a heck of a punch. The power of brushless and the handling/stability of a buggy makes for a great combination.
