MMM up in smoke

So I ran my emaxx today in the dirt for the first time. I ran on pavement twice and it ran great, except the motor (7xl) got hot. Well, the truck ran for about 5 mins and then just stopped. Mass amounts of smoke came out and when the dust settled the MMM's plastic casing melted and the wires to the batteries melted completely off. The deans connector to my flightpowers also melted off. Not a pretty sight, I just hope I didn't ruin my batteries. Not a happy camper!

By the way, I'm running the 4cell flightpower 4900mah 25c geared at 22pinion with the stock spur. I hope castle covers this under warranty or something.

Sounds like the first real failure. Wonder if something grounded out to cause this? Like a motor wire?

I'd say unless those flight powers are utterly amazing they are toast. Have you tried to charge them yet cause I'm willing to bet they'll be below 3v per cell. It sounds like they were shorted for a long time.

Mine smoked too. I know of one other that melted as well.

When I hooked up the batteries to the balancer, it said it was still half charged and those amazing flightpowers haven't ballooned up. I'll try charging them tonight.

That is lucky. At least it won't be a hugely expensive failure then.

Well, just makes me worried about the next time. I don't want to risk killing the batts again.

Far out, any pics?

Slow --

Check your 7xl -- I'll bet you demagged it. Can't tell you how many motors we demagged in house. A quick demag can raise the current so high that it smokes the controller quick before the over temp/over current kicks in.

Really? Will that affect my warranty? I bought that motor new here.

Probably not. :) We are very good about warranty on new products...

Thank Gawd!!

Lucky for me, mine went in my house (wife doesn't see it that way). My motor is perfectly fine. I put the MM back in and all's swell.

man i hope mine doesnt do that! I think ill stick with the max amps pack for a while until i know all is well, that way if it smokes the battery i am not at too much of a lose.
